Semi-OT: Ballard leads for Colts GM, but may not take it

Report: Chris Ballard is "clear favorite" for Colts GM job, but wants to make head coach change

There was a lot of talk this winter about whether Caserio, Josh, or Matty P should just jump at the first job they're offered or be more patient. Or those who think the short-term pay raise is worth it regardless of long-term stability.

But it's clear that this is not just a New England thing. More and more executives and coaches are spending more and more time thinking about whether an organization is a good fit or not.

We saw that in Buffalo, where McDermott was the leader after the interviews but didn't take the job until he had several more in-depth conversations with the owners about chain of command.

And we see it with Ballard, who turned down interview requests with the Bucs a few years ago, and some would think he would never get another chance again. Except last year, he got the opportunity to interview for the Jets job (and passed, as did 3 other potential GM candidates). And again, some would think it was foolish and his last chance. But then he gets another with the Colts, and apparently the job is his if he wants it, except he still hasn't accepted because he has some conditions, specifically regarding the head coach.

I'm sure this infuriates some on this board who think he should be grateful to even have the opportunity and take it or else he'll die a homeless loser because these chances almost never come up.

But it shows that people are thinking about these "opportunities" more seriously now. In the Not For Long league, you may not get 4 or 5 years to implement your full vision, so you need to ensure you can get a fair shot to prove yourself. More and more people are hesitating taking ****ty jobs, especially if they already have good jobs.

If you're out of work, desperate, need to feed your family, you need to take any job you can get. I understand and agree with that. But if you have a good job, like going to work, you're not going to dump it just to get a pay raise and a new title only. There are tons of other factors involved in that decision, and we're seeing more and more football people consider those factors instead of automatically leaping at any opportunity they get.

Also depends on what that current good Job is. If it is a 6-figure+ plus Pay raise, some guys will Roll the dice with a Bad boss.

But i Do think it is a smart idea If truly is a Trend not to Jump at every offer. Certainly good for Patriots with McD situation.

The media is just guessing at this point, 2 weeks ago everyone in the media was saying Grigson was safe.

Nobody knows what is going on in the bizarro world mind of Jim Irsay, He might want to keep Pagano or Pagano could easily be randomly fired next week when he hires a new GM.

Y'know, McDaniels would do a hell of a job with Luck and those receivers they have. Doubt he would work for Jim Irsay, though.

Live look at end of the meeting between Irsay and Ballard

I can see these guys not wanting to be set up for failure, he'd rather wait until an opportunity presents itself that gives him the best chance to succeed.

This is a great hire for the Colts, it will be interesting to see if Pagano is one and done after this upcoming season.

Ehhhhhhhh...it's a body...filling an open position. It's probably not a terrible hire, but with Pagano and Irsay still involved, the ceiling is only so high.

Very true. Anything is likely better than Grigson.

Pagano doesn't seem like a great coach but, how can you really fairly judge him when he's had the worst guy in the business managing personal? It's like trying to fairly evaluate Payton's poor defense when Mickey Loomis has drafted two good defensive players in his tenure (Malcolm Jenkins who isn't with the team anymore and Cam Jordan).

We might very well have BB and maybe PC at SEA (and a few other HC/GM out there) to thank for this trend. These new guys see what it takes to compete in this league, and a fragile paper title without complete full vertical decision autonomy is not a good place to start.

Not for us, unfortunately. But just like when the Jest felt like it was time to cut bait with Rexy and Idzik, it wasn't like they turned into a powerhouse. That's where I hang my hope.

If this guy is even average it's a big upgrade for the Colts, good job for this guy too you're trying to win a division which was just won by Brock Osweiler.

It's not a hard division to win, seen on twitter that Luck is 25-0 when the defense gives up less than 19pts. Draft defense have a middle of the pack defense instead of the worst in the NFL and boom division champs.

Of course you'd need a lot more than that to compete with the Pats but no reason they can't make a quick return to the playoffs.

Lucky for the Dolts they get to play the AFC South every year...

Titans and Texans don't look too bad. Given the roster situation in Indianapolis it could become an uphill battle for them in the next 2 years.

Loomis is terrible. They had such a good thing going down there
