Collins has bulked up to 260-265. He wouldn't say how much he bulked up. Could Bill have asked him to bulk up and keep a lid on it as much as he can. Maybe Collins is going to play a Von Miller role. Or even play some DRE or standup DRE as a rush OLB opposite of Jones for some 3-4 formation plans. Collins is as explosive/athletic as Miller and Bill could use him in a similar scheme as Miller to put more Heat on QBs. Or even have him pass rushing from DRE while whiting Jones to DLE on those schemes.

Or Bill could even stand both Jones and Collins up in 3-4 formations. The versatile Ninkovich could return to OLB in the 4-3 while The Explosive Collins moves to rush the QB opposite Jones. Or while in the 3-4 formations while Jones/Collins are pressuring QBs as rush OLBs Ninkovich could even play ilb role of the dirty work taking on blockers to free others and allow Easley to focus on rushing the QB as 3-4 DE.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I'm sure Bill was already planning on using him in a variety of ways regardless. His skill set makes him extremely versatile, having played DE, LB, and S. I think it's simply a player preparing his body for a full-time workload, which he didn't have to worry about last season.

Craig has to be Gymrat...right? I mean the only 2 people on the board to mention bulking up so many times in one post...

The general point is good though - there's a lot of pieces on the defense that can be moved around to suit match ups. Collins is a rare athlete and a player the team needed.

Dues I highly respect and consider anything you ever have to say! But if Jarvis Jones can be considered very close to Millers raw talent why can't Collins? While Miller had a highly decorated college career and hit the NFL with anticipation and he is a very rare athlete! Players with similar raw ability are drafted in later rounds that have far less college awards/championships/glamour. In terms of raw movement skills I think Collins is at least very close. He had an explosive player index rating the highest in his entire draft. Maybe that's no garuntee for success,it has to be impressive that he has such raw burst/flexibility/explosion/speed.

T, every speed rusher drafted adding size is stressed as important for success. Gym rat is more toward NFL players and free weights. While I think power and ability improvement is helpful I think NFL players should go a little different route. And I don't want Andre Johnson. Well if our young talent flopped maybe. I'm a Kenbrell fan and want to develop our own impact WRs. I'm in favor of a Denarius Moore trade we could get for a #4 at the most. And give us another young WR with explosive ability to develop into a consistent playmaker and make his pro bowl debut in a patriot uniform.

And yes we do have players to move around that can do so much its reminiscent of amount of strategies a top chess player can devise. BTW everybody I seem to talk to or meet and chat a minute all themselves say they are done with Hightower if he shows up over 270 again and looking slow. Those weren't my words originally. On the other hand if he can get with Dion Jordan and add 20 lbs or so hmmmmm...... Maybe a Henry Melton type DT LOL j/k

1.) Feel free to look up their respective combine numbers, if you want to talk about the so-called "raw talent". Collins wins the jumps. Miller wins the rest. If I need someone to get a book off a top shelf, I'll call for Collins over Miller. If I need someone with better "raw talent", I'll call Miller.

2.) Jones was about production over "raw talent". You may recall his very pedestrian 40 time.

I am a huge fan of Jamie Collins and he is absolutely a gifted athlete but Von Miller is a more explosive player.

    Von Miller
    Height: 6025
    Weight: 246
    40 Yard Dash: 4.42
    20 Yard Dash: 2.57
    10 Yard Dash: 1.57
    225 Lb. Bench Reps: 21
    Vertical Jump: 37
    Broad Jump: 10'06"
    20 Yard Shuttle: 4.06
    3-Cone Drill: 6.70

    Jamie Collins
    Height: 6034
    Weight: 250
    40 Yard Dash: 4.59
    20 Yard Dash: 2.61
    10 Yard Dash: 1.58
    225 Lb. Bench Reps: 19
    Vertical Jump: 41 1/2
    Broad Jump: 11'07"
    20 Yard Shuttle: 4.32
    3-Cone Drill: 7.10

As you can see the 20 yard shuttle and 3-cone are significantly better for Miller. As far as the Jarvis Jones goes anyone, who compares his raw talent to Miller or Collins should have their head examined.

    Jarvis Jones
    Height: 6023
    Weight: 245
    40 Yard Dash: 4.88
    20 Yard Dash: 2.79
    10 Yard Dash: 1.66
    225 Lb. Bench Reps: 20
    Vertical Jump: 30 1/2
    Broad Jump: 09'03"
    20 Yard Shuttle: 4.71
    3-Cone Drill: 7.46

I think like most years Belichick will incorporate many different looks. I think the goal for Belichick is going to be to create enough versatility with Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, and Hightower that they can stunt, having the DE drop into coverage and the LB set the edge or pass rush.

I also think you can see more 3-4 looks with Chandler Jones playing RDE and Collins as the WOLB.

    SOLB – Ninkovich
    LDE – Easley
    NT – Wilfork
    RDE – Jones
    WOLB – Collins
    SILB – Hightower
    WILB – Mayo

I thought Collins ability to move as well as he showed last year was due to the fact he wasn't so bulky. I liked the fact that he was dropping into coverage and use his quickness and speed to make plays but also still attack the LOS.

I hope he didn't lose the quickness and speed he showed last year because of that extra weight.

Do we really know that he added weight? This is just coming from a comment from a poster who is becoming infamous for rambling on with unsupported opinions.

I agree, hopefully he just got leaner and added muscle and didn't gain too much actual weight to slow him down.

Miller might be more explosive, but if Collins gives us atleast half of Miller's sack production, than thst to me makes Collins just as special as Miller. I don't think Miller in Collins level coverage wise. ....

Going on and on about these #s is fruitless. Take Tedy Bruschi. Numbers OK but production off the charts, especially when it counted. Yes, I know TB played ILB.

There was an article on the Herald that talked about Collins looking bigger:

    No Jersey Selected

Looks like he's trying to get on the field during run downs as well. If the added bulk that's being reported can help him be more effective on first and second down and if he didn't lose any of his speed because of it, he should be able to have a very effective and disruptive season.

250 pounds is plenty heavy enough to be a super-athletic LB who can cover and rush the passer. Not to be an ideal thumper, but we don't need a thumper and that's not a good use of his talents anyway. Mayo came into the league at 250 pounds, so I just don't buy that it's too light.

If Collins is actually in the 265 pound range I'll be concerned that he might have lost some agility, but I'll believe it when I see it.
