Re: If we got #1 pick for Cassell - what would BB do?
#3 from KC is not realistic, and if we somehow had it we would trade down is fast as possible, probably at a discount.
#22 from Minnesota (or #20 from Detroit) are realistic possibilities. I like the masturbation idea. After that we would do one of 4 things, in approximate order of probability (most to least):
- Use it as a value pick
- Trade back slightly with it and use it as a value pick
- Trade it into 2010
- Combine it with other picks to move up for someone special. There's too much talent in this draft to justify this, and a major move up is not BB's style and would not be cost-effective. Much as I love Aaron Curry (see my avatar) and dream about pairing him with Mayo, he's going to go too high to be cost-effective.
Some combinations at 22/23 which I like:
- William Moore/Sean Smith S + best available DE/OLB (Everett Brown, Brian Orapko, Greg Hardy, Paul Kruger, Michael Johnson, Aaron Maybin or Clint Sintim)
- One of above combos + Brandon Spikes/Rey Maualuga ILB
- One of above combos + Jason Smith/Eben Britton/William Beatty OT
I could see us making small trades, e.g., trading #22/23 and #57 to a team like the Giants for #29 and #44 (via New Orleans from the Jeremy Shockey trade). A small trade back like this in the first would allow us to move up to the mid-second and get another first or near first-round calibre talent who falls such as any of the above listed picks or Connor Barwin, Max Unger, Alex Mack or Brandon Pettigrew, Percy Harvin or DJ Moore, among others.
