idle thoughts - the bye week boredom edition.\\

Due to either size or ability, Faulk's the only running back on the team that can be counted on to pick up the blitz. That's a critical function against some teams. In the AFC, Pittsburgh, Houston and Baltimore come immediately to mind.

An extremely crucial factor that I believe is overlooked by the average fan.

That, and his experience and leadership are all important traits to consider.

I know that most will be whining if they fail to see Ridley enough (possibly myself included), but depending upon the matchup and situation Faulk is definitely a very good candidate in the backfield.

i can't believe there are other people who think about this stuff.

Final exams start next week. I hope our d can get off the field.

I would love to know the actual patriot analysis on shane vereen is now. They watched him on tape and see him every day. I think if he was that impressive, he would see the field. Is he a red shirt? All we heard was how well taylor price was doing and then he is gone. I don’t think the talent level in the pats backfield is that great and can’t be cracked part time. Does he have ball security or blitz pick-up issues? I know we stockpile draft picks, let’s not do it with draftees. As bill parcells says you are what your groceries say you are.
I have not given up on vereen but thought he would have some role this year. We did take him earlier than ridley. What i’ve seen so far, (small sample) has not been impressive. He does not seem to be the dynamic, quick back indicated by his draft position. I was thinking he would at least be a great reciever out of the backfield, a young kevin faulk. Because for the most part, running backs have a short shelf time, i’m skeptical. It’s too late this year but it’s sink or swim next fall.

I was posing the question of trading the lower #1 for adrian peterson or mario williams. I would not be in favor of either move. I would prefer signing calais campbell and brandon lloyd, (age issues), since it’s not my money and we keep the picks.

Can someone explain the hoyer / mallett situation. Is hoyer a free agent / if not what is his trade value – options. Is he good enough to play elsewhere as a starter.

Patriots have the most volatile (high turnover) personnel situation in the nfl.

Brady + solid o-line + great control passing game + no welker injury = wins.

Looks like next year pats have plenty of tackles seabass, solder (the twins) and cannon, so don't draft another.

Does waters come back and i hope mankins stays his entire career.

Pittsburgh / baltimore / new orleans or green bay. If pats win 2 of 3 i will never question a patriot draft again. Unless …..

Questions: Who would you sign (free agent) for pats this off- season? (only 1 player allowed.

Do the patriots think wide receiver, (not slot) is an important position?[/b]

To answer some of your questions that I underlined, I believe that yes..viewing Vereen as a rookie is definite cause for concern with the ability to know and be comfortable in the offense, not turn the ball over, and be able to pick up the blitz (that is huge). As the off-season and TC approach in the summer and pre-season next yr, I think we'll know a lot more about him, and he will surely be working on the 3 skills that I listed.

Is it a red-shirt yr for him? Pretty much so. The drafting of Ridley after Vereen is completely irrelevant, especially on a BB coached team. We've seen that plenty of times every single year. I think we all had high hopes for him, but he didn't have much of a chance to crack the RB depthchart, and his injury status may have also set him back too.

No, the talent level on the RB core is certainly not elite, but each player has a niche, a certain role. Whether you're the brusier type goal line back, the hurry-up guy, the other 3rd down back who is much better than anyone at picking up the blitz, or the rookie who has shown flashes and has the hot hand, they all have their own niche here. Vereen will have a chance to fit in, especially with the retirement of Faulk and the possibility of BJGE not returning.

The Hoyer situation is that he will be a RFA, so he realistically is not going anywhere. Only time will tell if he is a starter in the NFL, but since there is not really any tape on him, that is currently very hard to determine. Live game reps would go a long way towards helping him there. For now, he's nothing more than a reliable backup QB. Mallet will progress as he gets more time too, and learning from Brady will obviously help a lot. I would sincerely doubt that he knows 1/4 of our playbook at this point.

The high turnover rate here is necessary to continue to field a competitive team, and we have seen consistent dedication to winning via the free agency period of the NFL. It is a business, and I believe that there will continue to be a high turnover in New England. You can't argue with the results.

I agree with you that the O-line aspect is just as important as, if not more important than the defense. Protect TFB and give him time to find the open man, and he will always beat you. He needs to stay upright, and the 8 sacks in the last 2 weeks are not giving me the greatest feeling heading into the postseason.

Waters signed a 2 yr deal, so he will very likely be back. I wouldn't imagine any reason not to keep him here.

Mankins signed a 6 yr deal in the off-season, so he very well may end up staying here throughout the end of the Brady era, and finish his career a NEP too. Let's hope he can play next Saturday night though.

I think we'll see a WR taken in the draft for sure, although it may not be as high as many hope. Yes, I believe that they view it as an "important" position, but when you have Welker (Brady's go-to guy), Branch (Brady's go-to guy in the past), + the 2 TE's = that makes for 4 very viable candidates at WR. There are only so many balls to go around. We may also see another lesser known or mid-level free agent signing at the position, I would not doubt it.

If I personally could sign ONE player (free agent) in the off-season, it would be in the secondary; possibly another CB. I am not sure of all of the options for free agency 2012 and I haven't really looked, but that's my personal wish. It seems like you can never have enough CB's that can play. However, with the injury to Ras-I-Dowling and the (hopeful..crosses fingers) emergence of Sterling Moore as at least a nickel or dime back on the 2012 squad, DE/LB may be a smarter and more need position to go. I would narrow it down to those 2 positions, depending on Belichick's opinion obviously. The more I consider it, a very good DE/LB may be a better option, and I think we'll solve the CB problem for 2012. I would choose the front 7 position, although I cannot specifically name any names personally. Sorry.

I enjoy your posts.

Supafly – thanks for the information etc.

It looks like you have a good handle on the pats personnel situation.

Over the next two years i believe the pats try to pull a cassell like trade with hoyer with mallett having more potential. I think cassell is limited as is hoyer.

Free agency is hard to get accurate info on who is out there. Wr looks strong and there should be a couple of de's out there. Rather than carpet bomb with mixed results like last year i would prefer the pats target 1 or 2 vets for 2012-13. Ie calais campbell.

More questions: What are your thoughts on cunningham. As a rookie he looked like he had edge rush potential, now everyone thinks he is gone next year.

Were you surprised last year with how well mccourty played and where is his future cb or s ? Same with dowling cb or s.

My pats needs list de / olb / dl / wr / (s,cb) / (c,g)

to me ninkovich is a very underrated player and needs to stay.

I think it's hard to say with Hoyer, but it would make sense to try and trade him as you stated; especially if Mallett proves in the next year that he may be ready to take over as backup. Right now, I wouldn't think we'd get much more than a 5th, maybe a 4th if we're lucky, but some here think it could be a 3rd or so. I think if he continues to gain more exposure and proves himself in the pre-season, the mid-level trade compensation may prove to be more likely.

Of course, it's possible that the Pats may want to extend him next yr, and that they are completely satisfied with him as their backup. To me, the whole Hoyer situation is a bit of a mystery to be honest with you. I think he needs some more reps and exposure to take the next step forward to be considered a starter, but some disagree and think he could start right now and gain us about a 3rd rd pick. Regardless, we'll find out soon enough, and I'd be happy either way. I kind of like the feeling of Hoyer as our backup though, and certainly wouldn't mind if he stayed around.

As far as Cunningham goes, even though he was put on IR he continued to attend all of the positional meetings. That may be due to him possibly having a spot here next yr, or it could be that he is just trying to be a good 'team player' by trying to continue to learn. I think there's a good chance that we go back to a 3-4 base next yr, and that is where he fits in. Therefore, I personally am not ready to write Cunningham off..and won't be until he's cut. I feel as though the signing of A.Carter and the switch to the 4-3 this yr really didn't allow him to have much of a role, so it's a bit hard to determine if he actually regressed that much, or if it was more of a scheme change and depth issue. Regardless, I think he's on the team one more yr in 2012. We all know that BB isn't afraid to cut a high pick, but he does offer them a fair chance to prove themselves. I think that Cunningham showed us something at times last yr, and will earn another chance in 2012. Just my opinion though.

Yes, I was absolutely shocked at McCourty's inability to cover anything this yr, and I think he had a terrible year in just about every game. There are some who feel as though he "came around" a bit, but I'm really not one of those people. However, I do think that he will continue to play safety in sub-packages, and continue to man the CB position in base defense throughout the playoffs. He does better in zone with his eyes toward the QB, than he does in man coverage..and this move could attempt to utilize his strengths to everyone's advantage. I guess we'll see if he turns it around, and what year's McCourty is the "real" McCourty. Year one or year two? It's also possible that the gift of the full off-season mini camps + TC can help him iron out his weaknesses.

While many think Dowling will play safety here, I think he stays at CB. In my opinion he looked promising in the little sample that we got while he was playing. He can play good strong physical man coverage, and has size. I think Dowling is one of our CB's next yr, one way or another. (either McCourty as a permanent safety, or even the possibility of Arrington playing full-time nickle)

There are many here who have a much better breakdown of the X's and O's, and some real good defensive specialists. They may be able to better answer your questions, but those are my personal assessments anyway, for whatever that's worth.

I agree on C.Campbell, but am worried that he may want too much money for the front office's liking. I think there's a definite possibility of continuing to target low-to-mid level signings like we've seen in the past, but then again I also think that we may see a bigger name again (I know that's not helping much and is extremely general). It has to be eating at Belichick to some degree, and if we don't see a mid-to-higher level signing on defense, then I would definitely think this is the yr of a first or second round DE or LB. I know that you may laugh, due to BB's past record, but I just have a feeling that many of the bases have been covered in the past couple/few drafts, and the positions that you listed are the ones he will have to target.

It could be a yr where he actually takes 3 out of the 4 'higher' picks. I do think that the secondary positions may be targeted in free agency this yr though. Not necessarily the best well-known guys, but BB prides himself in turning some of those mid level guys into stars, and we may see another attempt at that. I would have to think that CB and or S are positions that will be targeted in free agency. I don't think Edelman makes the full-time switch to the secondary (although he may/should see some extended time there in the next couple/few weeks), and I think the secondary improves closer to a middle of the pack type for 2012.

I do think this defense has good potential, and is still involved in a learning curve and (overall) youth movement. I think that one or two decent picks/signings would make a ton of a difference, and move this defense a lot closer to where people want it to be.

Good discussing these issues with you. I look forward to more.

I am still not ready to write off Denver. Pittsburgh wants that win badly, but they still have to play the game, and despite the last three losses, Denver doesn't seem to have had any morale let down, and THEY certainly WANT to put an L on Pittsburgh's playoff season.

So many folks are saying that Pittsburgh is going to light up Denver, but I see a real dogfight of a game, an old-fashioned smash-mouth football game, and Denver may well be able to win that, especially if the game comes down to a final series in the 4th quarter or OT to pull out a win.

Good call, esp. when the OT is included. I have to admit, I was one of those who didn't give the Denver Donkeys much of a chance today. Looks like I'll have to wait at least one more year to see the PitsDirt Squealers lose another PO game in Foxborough.
