I see a lot of people clamoring for either Larry Fitzgerald or Tamba Hali on a couple different threads.

Hypothetically if they both could be had for our 1st and our 3rd this year would you make the trade for one of them, go after someone else or solely depend on the draft and free agency?

I'd trade for Hali in a heartbeat. He's exactly the kind of player this defense needs.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

I'd probably do it for Hali or Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald would add a lot to the offense, and we would still have two picks in the top 33 which could boost our OL.

Hali is the type of player worth drafting in the first round, minus the risk and development factor. He is certainly worth a first round pick and then some.

Both are going to want big money extensions.

    I can't decide.
    Both.
Split the picks to next year.

    For Hali, I'd consider it.

I keep reading Fitzgerald would be a huge upgrade to our offense, but I don't know. For one thing, Tom doesn't have the arm to throw deep consistently to Fitzgerald. He'd be great on jump balls though.

But I can't imagine Fitzgerald improving the #1 offense more than the impact those picks would have on our D if we drafted a stud DE/OLB, or got Hali. Fitzgerald could improve a strength, while Hali would improve a weakness. The impact would be bigger.

I would rather see them use the 17th and another pick. hopefully one of the 3rds to move up in the first round to get Von Miller from Texas A&M. He is a monster.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

The only way I would make that trade would be if the player signed an extension with the Pats. Hali is a free agent and will probably be frachised. Fitzgerald has one year left on his contract I believe, he would have to sign an extension to make it worth doing.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

Easily it would be Hali. He is familiar with the Pats' system and could step in right away. He would easily be the best OLB the Pats have had since McGinest or possibly Tippett. He is great vs. the run and the pass. Can play the Elephant role of being an OLB in the 3-4 and DE in sub packages.

Personally, I think he is my dream selection over any other free agents. I would want him over Fitzgerald who is more of a luxury than a need.

Hali would be my preference too -

I know this is just idle speculation but the truth is that when it comes to the draft, 6 picks in a deep draft, while great, is still casting with a wide net. We've seen Belichick hit pay dirt as well as strike out. Turning 2 potential starters for one sure fire starter on a team that has limited space in the first place could be a wise strategic move

    x2

this is possibly the best 3 sentences I have read on here in a few days.
    Well done sir :rocker:

For the record, my choice would be Hali as well. We need that pass rush like a crack head needs crack ha. My dream scenario would have us grabbing a DE at 17, making a trade for Hali and grabbig a C/G at 33.

Man, that was a great season. :singing:

But as a guy who has watched Brady since he was a bench warmer at Michigan, I think a huge part of that season was because of Moss's renewed energy and desire for a new contract, as well as to protect his legacy. Brady made a lot of great throws too, but other than that season, hasn't been very consistent with the deep ball.

I could see Fitzgerald being a similar type of presence though, maybe not speed wise but he's unreal on jump balls. I think he's even better than Moss ever was in that regard. But I think the upgrade to the D would be a bigger boost to our team than adding Fitzgerald.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

    Hali no doubt.

Although saying Fitzgerald wouldn't improve the wr core drasticaly is strange to me. You compare Fitz to Moss as a downfield threat and great at leaping for balls but fail to mention what a great all around player he is. He is great at the short passing game too,he's as physical as they come.{strong enough to compete with Revis} Can block and runs one hell of a reverse. Simply put, he immediately makes this team better as well as free's up our other wr's and te's to do the things we want to dictate. He commands double teams and as long as Brady stays with the spread the ball around routine, Fitz would fit in nicely here.

I do agree that Hali would be more of an upgrade like you suggest though.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

Just for the record, I think Fitzgerald is the best WR in the game right now. But for what we'd have to trade for him, as well as what we'd have to pay him, I don't think we could justify it especially if Brady and the offense aren't going to throw deep consistently to take advantage of some of Fitzgerald's best skills.

I'm not saying Fitzgerald couldn't play here or be successful here. I just think that we'd improve the team more by using the draft picks on the defensive side or to acquire Hali is all.

Isn't Hali a free agent? If so, why trade for him, we just need to spend the money.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

I don't really get the huge woody a lot of folks get over draft picks vs proven vets. If I'm drafting, the first two are probably, depending on how the draft falls, pass rushing OLB & DE.
If I could get Hali instead I'd do it in a heartbeat. I still picture McGinnest almost single handedly keeping the Colts out of the endzone. We are now missing that playmaker that Hali could be.
I'd love to have Fitz for the all around offensive player/weapon he is but I have nightmares of Tommy getting pummeled by the Giants, Ravens & some other team recently with the looming prospect (I'm a glass half empty kinda guy) of loosing Mankins, Light & Neal - YIKES!
I'll bet Gizel is wispering in Tomy's ear it's time to model shoes full time.

Please sign Light for 3 years, make nice with Mankins & sign him (I don't want to risk Tommy by replacing Mankins with a draft pick)
Hali would be a HUGE upgrade for the D & well worth trading for.
If I were to choose another player it might be to upgrade Tommy's protection with Nick Mangold which would also give us the chance to step on Rex's toes.

    Re: hypothetical trade scenario

I would say Hali, or, if the price tag is too steep, acquire new talent via the draft or free agency.
