I remember going back to the 60 and the 70 `s how the draft was
done in the media. In Boston only wbz radio gave you updates in the
draft every 30 minutes.Very few magazines had anything about drafts
in them.Profootball weekly came out in 1984 with the first book printed
after season ended.Draft was then on tuesday`s at 10.00am .Early then
afl and nfl would have seperate drafts. Both leagues would draft same players
different teams. In those days pats would draft a player they knowthe other
league would not draft in earlier rounds.Teams would hide players in hotel
rooms day of drafts so the other league couldn`t find them. Lots of
players were signed the day they were drafted. Now today you got mock
drafts something that no one in those days knew what it meant.

I have some draft books from mid 70s...NOTHING like some guides out now...and there were NO news stand issues about the draft. I remember before then how the war was between the leagues...so few remember that and how it was a big battle as to where players would sign. Also, the NFL draft was many many rounds...18??? Then 12 and reduced...now there are UDFAs that would have been drafted..really interesting how it has all changed.
Does anyone remember Ken Beatrice who used to be on Boston radio and how he knew ALL about the draft??

i forgot about him he was on bz week before draft every day
became a talkmaster in washington

The draft coverage has changed, and so has the interest. I remember back in '84 hearing about Irving Fryar second hand. I was thrilled when I was told that he ran a 4.4. It was the first 40-time I'd heard of for a Patriot.

Ken Beatrice, ha, just hearing that name makes me laugh.

Never knew what his story was...he disappeared and..headed to DC. But he wassupposedly an NFL scout or had ties to scouting..and was suuposedly a fake or not really telling the truth..but he DID seem to know his stuff. MORE SO than nay around..so???
Just remember him arounf draft time...as one who knew a lot..or seemed to.
