They resent us for the same reason they resent Bill and Bob. They grew up in an age and a town where a reporter for the Globe knew more about all these sports than any of the guys running the teams or playing for them or cheering for them. That made him a god. They all thought one day they would be the Will McDonough of their generation. But **** happens, times change, leagues and in many cases ownerships evolve and fans get an education...while entrenched media get left behind. Turned out Bill wasn't egotistical pond sum and Kraft wasn't the village idiot fanboy businessman and winning meant neither needed them to help placate a restless unhappy fanbase in exchange for access. It was a crashing disappointment but one they still believed would be short lived and they warned us of that. That hasn't panned out either. Now their industry is dying and most of them are having to prostitute themselves on other media they used to castigate as beneath them just to afford a home in Wayland or Wellesley... While football fans in this region continue to bask in the glow of what Belichick and Kraft built around a 6th round draft pick QB few of them (Felger the cheesehead being the only one) recognized in part because they were so invested in touting Bill and Bob's impending failure and cultivating relationships with someone on the inside who harbored similar resentment they never noticed Brady inching him out...
This. Anyone who wonders why Boston's own Naploean Dynamite is so sour on the Patriots and Bob Kraft in particular need only read what Mo just posted.
Bill Belichick has completely rendered the traditional Boston media princes irrelevant - - he cultivated and gave favored status to outsiders to the old boy network like Mike Reiss, Michael Holley while also leapfrogging the local knights by going all David Halberstam on 'em. Throw in the exclusives to Mike Mayock and 60 Minutes (when the Globe can't get 60 seconds!) and you have an obvious reaction from the CHB.
The kicker probably to the Globe and Herald was in the 1990's when Kraft established Patriots Football Weekly, the and then went with the radio and web shows. He created an "end around" play and has been more successful than the alternative energy industry so far versus the entrenched petroleum corporations.
The Globe kicked him when he was down (in what many saw as a racist way) in the mid-to-late 1990's during the attempt to build a stadium in South Boston. He very quietly but with lethal precision has gotten the last laugh. Shaughnessy and his old school bosses see Kraft and Belichick like the VHS industry sees the DVD industry.
