Well, technically not the end result because the Vikings also got a 2012 7th round pick in that trade.

But for all intents and purposes the Pats traded Randy Moss for Ryan Mallett.

    Good, bad or meh?

i guess we will see. Randy was not producing when we traded him and we will see in the future what Ryan Mallet becomes. Too early to tell.

Quite ironic, we traded a troubled WR to get a troubled QB...I say it's good though.

We are doing something the other teams can't, that is trying to turn a J. Russell into a real QB

If this thing works out the way some think it could, it will be a blockbuster trade.

If Mallet straightens out, I could see a team spending at least a 1st round pick for a starting NFL QB.

But its been pointed out a fair few times. The patriots have time to work with Mallett. The organisation is in no need to push him into active duty. I have a good feeling about this pick. It maybe the best thing to happen to him although I do believe the off-field stuff is over hyped in this case

Russell's problem was his work ethic, supposedly Mallett has great work ethic.....totally different situation.

No one's criticized the Pats for trading Moss since they've done better without him. Picking up a Mallet won't change that.

I love the Mallet pick because it's been lighting up the forums. Everyone and their brother were calling the Pats out on their QB scouting as a smokescreen. Lo' and behold, their top rated quarterback actually falls to them in the 3rd round, and the Pats had the guts to pull the trigger.

Everything I've read on Mallet paints him as a hard worker, driven to perfection, with a hunger for the film room that even amazes Bill Belichick.

Contempt for reporters? That's a positive for this team.

Drug and drinking issues? Could be problematic if that's his solution to riding the pine, but if his primary drug of choice is winning games and watching game tape, he'll fit right in with the other film junkies.

In the end, it's a third round pick. The trade was worth it just in case he becomes phenomenal and he could have gone to a division rival.

What makes this even better is that, to get Moss, the Pats gave up a 4th to Oakland, which the Raiders turned into John Bowe. NE got 3 terrific years from Moss, then made the trade that got them a 3rd-round pick with which they took a potentially franchise-quality QB.

AND, if I'm reading this right, the fourth they traded to get Moss was the other part of what Tampa gave up to move up in the first in '07, the other part being the pick that eventually became Jerod Mayo in '08.

So, in other words, with the 28th pick in the 2007 draft, the Patriots got Mayo, three years of Moss and Mallett.

Let's clarify something. No one has ever questioned Mallett's work ethic or football IQ.

So they traded Moss for a 2013 first. I'll take it!

Getting anything for Moss at that point in the season with the way he was acting was a steal.

IMHO there is a major differences between Jamarcus and Ryan.

Jamarcus was lazy and didn't work at his craft, He was paid millions and was a one year wonder, in college.

Mallett is a hard worker, he is a film rat, something Jamarcus never was, and he won't get paid millions until he produces.

Both are not IQ geniuses. But Jamarcus possessed a Wonderlic score in the low teens, almost functionally illiterate. Mallett has a high enough score at 26 to fit in the category of all the successful QBs; but it is toward the low end of the range. Still its higher than Terry Bradshaw and Ben Rothlesbergers scores,a pair of pretty successful QBs. Too low and you can't comprehend a playbook. They could, and so can Mallett.

Both Jamarcus and Ryan are huge, and both have cannons for arms and great size; but Jamarcus has running speed, but no shiftiness. Ryan has the same kind of side-stepping pocket shiftiness that Brady displays, but not to the degree; and Mallett like Brady, has next to no running ability.

I suspect Ryan's supposed personal "problems" are overblown. But he seems like a young boy and not too mature. Time will cure most of that.

There appears to be something else too. Ryan does not seem to be a natural born leader, and Leadership ability is a requisite quality for a great Quarterback.

Perhaps the most important thing is that Ryan loves football and is capable of talking about it 24/7.

This is what I think will separate Mallett from a Drew Bledsoe. Belichick will mold him in the right way, from the beginning, and I think he's got a good chance to become a starting caliber QB.

I'm sure Brady is not thrilled with the pick deep down, but will use it as motivation (not that he needs much at all). I'm sure our "beloved" media will ask Brady all kinds of questions regarding Mallett at their first opportunity.

Also, that was a very ignorant comment from that poster regarding Jamarcus Russell.
