Patriots | Former teammate doesn't expect team to pay for Samuel
    Fri, 2 Feb 2007 19:44:17 -0800

John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports Indianapolis Colts CB Dexter Reid, a former member of the New England Patriots, has said he doesn't believe the Patriots will pay enough money to keep CB Asante Samuel. "They won't pay him," Reid said. "You know that, being from the Boston Herald. You know how things work there. (Owner Robert) Kraft ain't paying nobody."

Agreed. I haven't followed Ried since he left the Pats. When he was here, all he did was struggle.

Football players are STUPID. Here's a guy that will make MORE money if the stars on the team leave some scraps on the table. And instead he's pimping the stars, which will take the team all the way up to the cap, and then nothing extra will be left for Reid. What an idiot. He doesn't even realize how things work.

Obviously, this is a problem for the Patriots since players areound the league are dumb and they don't understand how the salary cap works.

In the Dillon thread I suggested there was a perception among players and agents that the Pats wouldn't pay them. That didn't go so well.

But with malcontent messengers like Dexter Reid spreading the light to other NFL teams, its no wonder the only people excited about going to New England are refugees like Gaffney and Evans.

In related news its pretty funny Reid is talking **** about this, having lost out at strong safety to Mike Doss and a late 6th rounder (Antonine Bethea) this year. He's a shadow roster player on a team that doesn't pay its defense.

Don't forget, we paid Seymour last year. We paid Koppen early in the season. If a guy is worth it, he gets paid.

If we don't pay Samuel, it will be because he was asking for more than his value. I personally think he is gone because he is a below average tackler and makes some key mistakes when going for the big hit. The $7 million or so it would cost to keep him is enough to re-sign Graham, a key member of the offense, and to bring in a starting-quality vet CB.

Also, the package of picks that a franchised Samuel will command will help to build the next wave Patriots defense, much like the package of picks we got for Tebucky helped build this team.

But there are no starting quality CBs out there who will come in for $3.5 million. It really isn't going to happen.

And Neal and Light from last year and I am sure there are others. Plus, last time I checked, our QB has the highest cap number of all QB's in the NFL. But, right Dexter, we don't pay.......hope you miss 3 tackles and get your ass cut.

This is why Gene Upshaw just got extended for $3M per while guys he played with are collecting $200 per month pensions Gene negotiated up from $150 to prove how much he cares. :D

But just because Duane Starks couldn't start at CB for $3.5M doesn't mean we can't find a player who can operate in this system for closer to what Asante is likely truly worth. And if not and we are forced to pay a premium, perhaps paying it to a premium player would be a better route to go. Or spend the dough on beefing up the back end of the front 7 and then maybe Hobbs can cover one side and Bill can find another short warm body to cover the other just to tick off those who think CB's should be paid by the inch.

Apparently nobody told Dexter that Polian ain't paying CB's either. The last time Polian went against his instincts and paid for a defender he so regretted it he wouldn't pay him this year claiming if he was injured it must be non-football related. And they think BB is cold...LOL Freeney will get his from Polian either in contract or tag, but it will come at Dexter's expense. Hopefully then he will be happy.

I don't see any FA CB that fits that description other than Clements, and Clements isn't going anywhere.

actually, if I was BB, if traded Samuel for a 1st, I would draft Revis, or Leon Hall, or Ross in the 1st round. I would start Hobbs and the winner of Chad Scott/Randall Gay, the loser of that battle would go into the nickel. At some point the rookie will end up playing in the nickel because of injuries and will gain experience. In '08 the rookie will start opposite to Hobbs.

thats horrible..we'll get beat up and down the field. Gay isnt as good as some make him out to be..Asante's year is worth more than what Deion brought last year..

if i was BB i would resign Samuel long term and let him play.

It isn't that simple. You can't just give the guy what he wants, because he wants way to much and it sends the wrong message to the rest of the team.

Gay IS as good as people think, but in a different way. He is NOT a starting #1 or #2 cornerback, but he is a GREAT nickelback because the kid is an absolute ball hawk.

Gay has only played one real season, all told. We could very well see improvement out of him, if he can ever get back on the field for a bit.

So why didn't BB draft him instead????

Btw, I'm also a big fan of Jones.

He could be cut, seeing that Jones-Drew is doing so well there, and they have a fullback that isn't too bad either.
