It seems that when Browner is aboard, we will have Revis, Browner, McCourty and Harmon/Wilson.

Is the future of Dennard, Ryan and Arrington really to compete for the slot back and dime back spots for reps?

Obviously, the simplest option is yes, and we'll see if Revis is here next year. If so, and everyone else is healthy, Arrington will likely go.

Next year if Arrington is cut Pats save $1.4m, Dennard/Ryan are a combined $1.4m cap hit next year. If Revis and Browner are back, Arrington is for sure gone.

Arrington is no doubt the weakest of that group. Dude can only cover a slot receiver.

Is it time to revive the Arrington-to-safety discussion?

We are, after all, talking about a guy who led the league in INTs one season, covers well on STs, and has lined up on occasion to pass rush from DE.

I really hope we see Arrington in the slot between Revis and Browner, just to see PatsFans explode.

I would not be surprised if Browner was the #2 outside corner in base and then moved to "money" in subpackages. That would put Revis and Dennard/Ryan on the outside, Arrington in the slot, Browner manned up on the TE, McCourty back deep, and Harmon on the field in dime but off the field in nickel. That would get more out of the #3-5 CBs than if Browner was the every-down #2 CB.

IDK, Arrington might be able to catch the ball better than some of our receivers. Better switch him to O.

I think this will be real interesting to see how the reps shake out and where people line up. I think if we pencil them into their more natural positions your 5 makes sense but if we are just asking who the best 5 DBs are I think you have to replace Harmon with Dennard or Ryan.

This makes me think of something Josh McDaniels was quoted as saying to Obrien when he came back that January which was to not get caught up with positions all the time and just get your best guys on the field.

I think this plus the more and more prevelant use of nickle as the base that we are not as crowded as one might think.

If we leave T. Wilson as a ST only guy and then have Harmon/Dennard/Ryan Arrington split the various duties of safety, slot CB and Dime CB you can find roled for everyone. A little less sure about where Adrian Wilson would fit in if at all but curious he is not cut yet wouldnt shock me to see him give it one more go in TC clearly we are all concerned about his range but Revis and McCourty can cover a large range maybe he has some value yet.

Someone is going to have to slide to Safety, and I think Arrington (who has size and has played there before) is a good candidate.

Plus, he started out with the Pats as a special teams specialist.

If I were Nate Ebner or Kanorris Davis, I wouldn't be putting down any money on a mortgage in Massachusetts quite yet.

Safety is the interesting other side of this equation to think about when considering how the roster shakes out. We let go our primary strong safety from last year (Gregory), and have a rising sophomore and an older player who was either benched for a year or who was too hurt to play (or a combo of both?).

Last time we had a sophomore player take the #2 role for the year was Chung (I think that's right). That didn't work out so well.

More and more, safeties need their first competency to be in coverage, with run defense at #2. It's still important to do both, but is it possible to play Logan Ryan or Arrington at safety?? Not sure. It could be worth keeping Arrington on the roster through TC, for a) injury insurance, and b) experimentation at the safety spot.

We don't want safety to become a weakness on the D, and perhaps we can pull someone from our CB ranks to help out. Arrington knows the defense better than Ryan and Dennard. Am I crazy?

well.....he DOES fit the Pats model of smurf receiver....

and its funny, the last part of your disclaimer is almost word for word what my wife says to me.

The Pats (and every team) face enough 3WR formations that three cornerbacks are basically starters. I do think there will be some competition between Dennard and Ryan for snaps, but I also think that the Pats are going to play Browner, Dennard, and Ryan in a variety of roles that will allow for four corners to see a bunch of snaps.

And even if it turns out that the Pats have one too many corners, I'm a-okay with that if it means less of Arrington, even in the event of injury. I also wouldn't be totally shocked if Arrington was released, and designated a June 1st cut so that he didn't penalize the Pats on the 2014 cap.

Not to me. I just said the same thing in the post right before yours! :D

Arrington is a great STer. I know he has a cap hit, but he can fill 3 roles on this team. If anything, slide him to Safety. Kanorris Davis, Tavon Wilson or Nate Ebner should be a little bit nervous.

Arrington is 27 and has 5 full seasons in the Patriots's sytem.

I think we are going to see a lot of single safety and 3 CB (sometimes 4) CBs.

The only reason more teams don't do this is most teams are not 4+ quality CBs deep. McCourty will simply play center field slightly cheating over to Arrington/Dennard/Ryan's side.

That is the direction this D is going I think.

He also makes almost double what all three of them combined are paid. Ironically, that's probably why he's safe: because he has enough non-amortized guaranteed money left on his contract that, even if he's a June 1 cut, the cap savings from cutting him are still pretty negligible.

If that happened, it would make Arrington's contract for one year super horrible. It already looks bad (it looked bad at time of signing), but if he's cut then Bill will be acknowledging a colossal mistake.

Exactly. I'm no capologist, but from what I read from those who do spend all day on that subject, is that it would be 2015 that Arrington may not see in a Patriots uni.

I'll take that one step further. I'll be absolutely shocked if Arrington is a Patriot on week 1, 2015.

I started a thread on that premise days ago. :)
