NFL.com news: Uncertainty about Tebow leaves Broncos with draft dilemma

Ever since the last preseason, I've believed Hoyer to have potential. I didn't think many would agree with me, but an NFL.com article mentioned something along those lines. I don't know if he's ready to start on any team at this point in his career, but it would be nice if he had the potential to be Brady's successor (hopefully not anytime soon!)

IMO Hoyer has not been seen enough to say much of anything about him being a starting QB in this league.

With that being said and with the recent success of early QBs in the first 2 rounds,I would think it would be best to get a top name within the next 3 years to be Brady's successor which of course means using a 1st round pick on one in the upcoming years.

He's been impressive with his opportunities, that's for sure. The Patriots blow every other franchise out of the water when it comes to hitting on late round QBs. Brady obviously helps a bunch, and Cassel is no slouch. Hoyer has proven to be a serviceable backup with potential.

As for him starting... why not? The Seahawks threw a #2 at San Diego for Charlie freakin' Whitehurst. I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade for him, but probably not this year.

I like him better than I liked Cassel as a backup (prior to 2008, of course). He's got potential, and if he couldn't start in the NFL, I'm not really convinced BB would keep him around.

The only real action besides garbage time (in blowout wins/losses) was the Houston regular season finale last year.

    8/12 71 yards 66.7 comp pct 0 TD 0 INT

He looked good in that game and threw a 40 yard completion that got called back towards the end of the game with 2 minutes left.

To some teams, maybe a QB that has spent two years in the league behind Brady and Belichick could be more enticing than drafting a rookie.

He's been Brady's only backup since 2009. I think that speaks highly of Belichicks's confidence in him.

I certainly hope so! Otherwise, we should be picking up another #2.

I have lots of confidence in Hoyer if he had to start. Having said that much, I hope he never starts a single game while Brady is still in the league.

I don't think he's a HOFer or anything, but in a league that saw starts from Max Hall, Derek Anderson, John Skelton, Bruce Gradkowski, Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, Jake Delhomme, Drew Stanton, and Rusty Smith, I think there's a place for Hoyer.

If someone wants to cough up a high draft pick for him next offseason. . . . :)

If we could get a Charlie Whitehurst type of deal, I'd even help Hoyer pack and drive him to the airport :singing:

With a decent team/coach Hoyer could lead a team to 7 or 8 wins...

I think pats could pull off a decent year with Hoyer starting. If they kept him around long enough I think he'd be a good successor to brady depending on how long Brady plans on playing. I think Hoyer will be playing somewhere else though by then.

Impossible to say if Hoyer can even be an average back up QB at this point. Just not enough info.

Much like Cassel (whom the piece on All Access this week showed Bill and Scott saw the potential in from year 1) Hoyer is probably too valuable to trade at this juncture as he is more valuable on the roster than the draft pick compensation for him would be. After next season he's an RFA if the rules revert to 4 years. He could be targeted or shopped at that time. Bill isn't the kind of HC who is inclined to spend a lot of valuable rep time showcasing a backup QB though. They get limited reps in pre season and are asked to run aspects of the offense and not showcase any particular individual skill set, either. Which is why guys like Gutz and KOC couldn't cut it here...they couldn't read defenses and lacked poise and tended to revert to quickly to trying to use their legs to salvage broken plays. Which reminds me of what Bill said to Cassel as a rookie and repeated at the probowl...you don't lose games throwing a incompletions. You lose games by making bad decisions.

I expect them to continue mining the later rounds and UDFA's for developable QB talent. The last time we had a first round QB on the roster he couldn't run Bill's offense because he was a bad decision maker and as is often the case with that level of often overhyped talent he didn't seem all that inclined to work on adapting his skillset to suit this offense...which for continuity sake is the way it is done here.

I would feel better about him if he didn't always get yanked so quickly.

He looks a whole heck of a lot better than Cassel looked at the same stage (playing time wise).

He also beats Brady in the accuracy drills.

Isn't he a little short as far as being the prototypical height for a QB? Maybe that is why he was overlooked.
