no way BB will make him the play caller again he is not known to do that to he's staff only way he is the pats OC next year if Bill O'Brien, get's a new job as a HC and that's not going to happen
all the probleme's on O are not all O'Brien's fault the pats run a offense, where the receivers read the DB's and run there routs according to what the defense is giveing them. and brady calls all of the pass protection's at the line
this year brady is not takeing what the defense is giveing him even when he throws to the TE's and the #3 or #4 WR everthing is a 50 yerd bomb
How come Belichick didn't elevate O'Brien to OC?
Also, Belichick came in in 1996 and took Groh's job.
I said it a few months ago and I will say it again....
The Buffalo Bills will announce Charlie Weis as their New HC once the season is over for them.
Then we will see the EX-OC vs his former Boss in the 2 head to head games making headlines in 2010
Mark it down.....
1.) Belichick didn't name McDaniels the offensive coordinator until 2006 even though McDaniels called the plays as the QB coach in 2005. The Pats didn't have an OC in 2005. O'Brien is following the same path.
2.) Belichick did not take Groh's job in 1996. When Belichick came in in 1996, Groh remained defensive coordinator while Belichick bacame secondary coach/assistant head coach. They can't do that to Weis since Scarnecchia is the assistant head coach.
I know all that. The answer is, the reason he didn't name them OC is because they were calling plays as a test, a probation of sorts. And O'Brien has looked worse than McDaniels.
Belichick was the huge force and difference in 1996. He had a huge hand as a Asst HC on the defensive side of the ball.
In short, I don't think BB would have any compunction whatsoever about bringing Weis in as OC if he thought it was the best thing to do.
Weis wants to be a head coach again and he is hurting himself by coming back to the Pats because even if the Pats went 19-0 people would say it is because he is with Belichick and Brady and wonder if he could run his own team.
I think people are reading too much into not naming an OC. O'Brien isn't nearly as good as McDaniels was, but I think Belichick doesn't want the pressure of a spotlight on his offensive signal caller until they get more acclimated. Also, since he isn't a coordinator, Belichick can still keep the press away from him because the league requires coordinators to be available to the media.
I seriously doubt Belichick didn't name O'Brien the coordinator in holding out hopes for Weis to return. Belichick will do what is best for this team to win, but he has never thrown one of his coaches under the bus while he was here. He has let coaches pursue other opportunities, but I don't think anyone has ever been fired, demoted, or stripped of responsibilities that anyone knows of (other than the Mangini rumor, but by most accounts he was never in danger of losing his job or responsibilities long term).
I wouldn't be shocked if Weis returned in some capacity, but I am not betting on it. Even with rumors of animosity between Weis and Pioli, I say he has a better chance to end up in KC. Weis wants to be a head coach again and he is hurting himself by coming back to the Pats because even if the Pats went 19-0 people would say it is because he is with Belichick and Brady and wonder if he could run his own team.
I would love to see Weis AND Crennel bacl with the Patriots in any capacity!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the good old days!
Returning to an old coordinator spot you left for head coaching gigs has worked out okay for **** LeBeau who has won two Super Bowls since returning to Pittsburgh for his second gig there as defensive coordinator. Who says you can't go home again?

That is the issue. The NFL is very different now than it was in 2004. There has been a lot of trends with defenses and the rules that have made things very different. This has become a pass happy league with only one team that runs more than they pass (the Jets). Weis may be able to adapt just fine, but there is no guarantees.
Brady loves the shotgun because it gives him the ability to read the defenses and the rushes. It is hard to argue against the shotgun's success even if you can argue that they over-rely on it this year. Weis hates the shotgun. Brady gave in to Weis because he was still a younger player. Will the former League MVP, future HOF Brady who has had a major impact on the offensive gameplans for years be willing to give up the shotgun? Will Weis realize the value of the shotgun and run it more considering it is becoming the trend in the league?

Charlie is probably looking for an HC job in the NFL but if no one offers him one I see us hiring him back. And it's not clear that someone will offer him an HC job; after all his only HC experience was his 5 mediocre years as a college HC. And there are guys like Shanahan and Cowher and Gruden out who actually won Super Bowls in the NFL, and Charlie is not exactly an up-and-comer like McDaniel or (the perception was 4 years ago) Mangini. So I could see him coming back, definitely, and I would be in favor of it.
I think Charlie coming back for a few years would be awesome! I hope Kraft opens up the checkbook to get him back.
