Yow, Smith is 32! Older than I remembered. My is answer is, no, I wouldn't give a 3rd for Smith. A 5th, yes. On top of his age, I don't think he's the kind of player that fits in with BB's ongoing rebuilding. At this point Smith is just a touch too much diva when measured against his declining skills. Of course, if Price turns out to be a total bust in camp, then Smith could quickly be on his way. I'm not suggesting Price can't help us, he could become star - I'm only noting that we don't really know what Price has, if anything.

I'm all for seeing what Price has to bring to the table....or do the Pats drop Branch for Smith? Let's see what the youngster can do...just hope camp starts on time....

A receiving core of Sidney Rice, Wes Welker, Deoin Branch coupled with Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Alge Crumpler looks mighty fine.

The perception is that Smith is a me guy and a bad teammate.
If the perception is reality, no way. If the FO has a better insight and thinks the perception is wrong, the guy is a good football player.

Well the only way for Price or anyone to get better is to play harder against better competition. If we have W/B/E/T/P for WRs, I think we need more than UDFA for competition to get the guys at the bottom of the roster better. Is it worth a 3rd rd pick? We have plenty of picks, and if its in the cards to trade Welker(contract year, too many slot guys, getting older)ala Seymour for say a 2nd....spending a 3rd on Smith looks pretty good. Bottom line I want 6 NFL caliber WRs in camp battling for 5 spots. Smith is 1 option, but there are also plenty of FA WRs and its a position I dont mind the player being a tad older. IMHO.

For a 3rd rounder? Sure. It will be a late 3rd anyways and pats have 2 1st and 2 2nds right? I don't like the "he'll block development" argument. Brady isn't getting any younger. Win now!

He's 32, hasn't played a full season since 2005, cheap shots his teammates, would be coming in on a short offseason, and would only be under contract through 2012. A 3rd seems a bit steep to me, under those circumstances.

    Deoin Branch - 5'9/195
    Julian Edelman - 5'10/198
    Taylor Price - 6'0/205
    Brandon Tate - 6'1/195
    Wes Welker - 5'9/185

    Steve Smith - 5'9/185
    Sidney Rice - 6'4/202

Unless the Pats plan on sending the TE's on go routes every snap there's no reliable/obvious deep or vertical receiving threat for Brady to hoist one down field. I'm rather high on the collection of tight ends and their particular skill sets given their big play potential. That written, I'd prefer a more complete roster that covers all aspects of offensive players rather than precision passing and the dink and dunk offense types the Pats currently possess. Regular season success is nice but it's been a while since the Pats drank from the cup of post-season achievement.

Rice provides that dynamic downfield threat that none of the Patriots receivers have shown an aptitude for and frankly, the Vikings as an organization looks ready to blow up.

Think about it another way, with all the youth on the team now and adding 2 1sts and 2 2nds next year.....what kind of player are you going to get at the bottom of the 3rd? OC? Crable? McKenzie? While I know we like to trade 3rds for future 2nds youth is already served on the roster. Last year it was Holt, before him Galloway, and so on...we always bring in a vet WR. You cant tell me if Holt hadnt gotten hurt that he wouldnt have beat out either Tate or Price or Edleman. While doing the trade you aknowledge the loss of a 3rd rd pick.....but dont we do that every year anyways??

Hell Yes, let me know if these names ring any bells...

Former Patriot 3rd round picks for the Patriots, mostly a junkpile of total junk.

Smith is tough, can play any WR position, makes plays. I would rather see him on the outside than Tate or Taylor. No one loves the draft more than me but for the most part draft picks are highly overrated. After round 1 it is less than 50% the player even makes the roster.

The honorees (3rd round picks for the past 10 years)
    Taylor Price
    Brandon Tate
    Tyrone McKenizie
    Shawn Crable
    Kevin O'Connell
    David Thomas
    Ellis Hobbs
    Nick Kaczur
    Guss Scott

You're preaching to the choir on this one. :)

I'm 100% behind the idea of bringing in a downfield receiver with size.

Holt doesn't matter. Smith matters. I don't like the notion of giving up a 3rd for him under the circumstances. It's not because I want youth to be served (although Rice is a young receiver), it's because I don't like the combination of circumstances surrounding Smith enough to see paying the price of a 3rd for him.

While I certainly and obviously agree with your thoughts, and we DO need a significant downfield threat, I expect it to be either Tate or Price. Going after a guy like Rice who will demand 8-9 million per yr, just doesn't seem reasonable to me for this front office. In my opinion, they may go after a downfield threat in FA, but at a much cheaper cost and lesser known name. I do not know the options off hand, but am going to check into it when I get a chance. We just re upped Brady and Wilfork, and have Welker next year, and of course..the Logan Mankins situation to deal with this year.

I do however, hope that you are right, and it happens. It would solve a potentially big problem with certain unmentionable teams. I just don't expect it to happen at all.

As a professional Madden GM, I'd do it in a heartbeat! In reality though, I like what the Pats have going on with the locker room right now to risk it. On the other hand, as has been noted millions of times on these forums through the years, have had character problem guys work out in the past, and he does for some reason strike me as the type that wants to win bad.
