    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Exactly what I was saying after this one ended.

However, he dissed them for good reason. They couldn't stop the Colts at all in the fourth and Tom Brady getting two yards is an easier gamble (well, normally) than trying to stop Manning with two minutes to go.

Well the defense gets to make a statement this week then especially next week against N.O. I think our best chance to win was to convert the 4th and 2, if the defense doesn't like it, too bad I guess.

Agreed. If the defense was all about stopping the Colts, they had ample opportunity to do so on their TD drive that made it a 6 point game.

The problem with what Tedy says is the defense was given a chance to stop Peyton, and couldn't.

it's way too risky to go for it on 4th down on your own 30 when you are facing the colts and them having 3 timeouts. BB pulled this same nonsense in the super bowl going for it on 4th and 18 at midfield.

I still would have punted, but I dont see going for it a disrespect to the D. It is just a respect for Manning and the Colts O, maybe a little too much respect.

i mean say we punt and get it to their 20. anything could happen in that time span - a strip sack, a forced fumble, etc. Manning is great but he doesn't lead his team to a TD on EVERY down.

BB wasn't dissing his D, they were worn out. I thought going for it wa the best option a that point.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

This is a total red herring that the media will beat to death (How bout that mixed metaphor?). As Coach Herm said, you play to win the game. BB did what he thought gave him the best chance to that. The players are professionals, they have to be able to see that and get over their bruised egos. Maybe they can start by figuring out how to beat their blocks.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Yeah, I just really wish I could see how the defense would have responded if we punted. They came up big at the end vs Baltimore and could have came up big last night. We'll never know.

We could've given them the ball in Chicago and they would've scored.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

How can you say that though? Did they score every time they had the ball? No, not even close. I think people/BB are giving way too much respect to Manning and the Colts. Of course they are good, but to assume that they would go 60-70 yards in 2 minutes with 1 TO and score is a little too much respect in my book.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

They didn't have 3 time outs at that point... They had used 2 and were down to their last... NE just happened to be out of timeouts and couldn't challenge the spot... And an official review was out because it was on the wrong side of the 2minute warning.

At least BB is an equal opportunity disser. Bethea yapped that the play call was a "slap in the face" to the Colts' defense as well.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

That's the problem -- we saw this situation, and the D did NOT come up big vs. Baltimore: Mark Clayton dropped a pass.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Agreed......... It's not like the D's play in the 4th inspired a lot of confidence. Yeah, ticky tacky PI, they played well most of the game, blaa, blaa, blaa.... I got that..... Still the defense that just got through getting torched 20 seconds earlier to the tune of 70 yards was not one many people would have looked at and say "They got this".

    Sad........

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Gotta disagree, knowing that it was far from certain that it would result in a first down BB still had to be thinking that the defense had a probably a 50/50 chance of having to go back on the field. If the conversion works then the game is over, if not then the defense only has to prevent a TD which should have been well within their capabilities.

We won that game didnt we?, so the D got the job done. Even if Clayton catches that pass, that doesnt mean the Ravens win that game.

Nonsensical argument. Clayton only dropped the pass because McGowan was closing in for the big hit.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Instead of dissing the D why can't it be that BB had confidence in his O who had been moving down the field on the Colts with relative ease most of the night? Tedy & Rodney are D guys so I kind of expect them to see it one way not the other.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Meh. Love Tedy and can understand where he's coming from as he's a [former] defensive player, but I pretty much disagree with his "dissing" point because:

First, I should say I still don't know exactly how I feel about BB going for it, although I'm leaning heavily towards it should have been punted. Also, on the whole (INT, fumble and no scoring in the 3rd, IIRC aside), I think the offense pretty much did its job and don't feel I can rightfully complain about it. However, I still wasn't comfortable with even a 17 pt lead. It's just not enough of a lead to feel good about that early in the 4th facing PM. Once the Pats were up 31-14, I REALLY wanted at least another 3 BEFORE the Colts had a chance to score again. Ghost got the 3, but not until the Colts had put up a TD. So, at 31-21 I'm not feeling good. at 34-21, I'm feeling a little better, but not much. Then 34-28, yeah, sorry, but I just started preparing myself for a loss.

So in short, I'm going against Tedy on BB dissing the defense by going for it. The defense pretty much dissed themselves letting the Colts get the 2 prior TDs (WEAK WEAK PI call aside, but who didn't see at least one of those coming playing Indy?) Sigh. That's all I got. :(

EDIT: And I need to say it because I really feel it's true - FAULK HAD THE DOWN! That is all. Really this time. Thank you. :)

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

It's true that Manning had some lousy drives and we had some outstanding stops. But it's the what have you done for me lately card raising it's ugly head. Manning is in BB's head as much as BB used to be in Peyton's. It's gone beyond respect. And Bill tends to handcuff his own defenses in these late game situations by playing prevent.

But the other sad reality is there is no way Hanson was going to punt them to the 20... On average their own 45 would have been the outcome. Although who knows, maybe one of our young defenders might have stripped an amped up returner...

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

BB thought that his O had a better chance of getting 2 yards on 1 play than his D stopping Manning and Co. from going 60-70 yards in 2 min. Was it the right call? In my mind, no. But I am not BB, I have all the respect in the world for the guy and will back every decision he makes. It was a gutsy call and it didnt work out, it is what it is we move on.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

I read Tedy's comments more that Belichick is now challenging the defense to step it up when needed as opposed to "dissing" them. Players, coaches, whatever, they let Indy score way too fast the previous posession and they need to know it's time to step up or step out.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Then you need to go back to the two previous games that the Pats had played against Indy where they did that exact thing. Except, this time, the Pats Defense was extremely tired because of a lack of bodies for rotation on the D-line and the LBers. Seems people have forgotten that they were without Ty Warren and Jarvis Green and then they lost TBC and Ninkovich during the game, thus making it extremely hard on the players that were left..

The Colts scored on their 1st and 3rd possession of the 4th quarter, marching 79 yards down the field on each occasion and doing so in 2:04 and 1:49 respectively. So, to think that the Pats would have prevented Manning from doing the same thing by punting when Manning still had a time out remaining is really wishful thinking.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

Some of you guys can wear your homer glasses and see the D made a stop there, but at the time I saw the team as lucky to get the win there as most NFL WRs don't get the yips like that and make that catch.

Either way, if you want to consider that as the D "making a play" you have to at least admit a WR dropping a pass because he feels safety pressure is way down on the list of Big Time D Plays.

That's pretty weird interpretation, because Bruschi also said that it would "make his blood boil for a week" That BB dissed the defense. Harrison basically had the same sentiment.

    Re: Bruschi:Belichick dissed his defense

"And I'm not talking about stopping the New York Jets with Mark Sanchez. I'm talking about the biggest of games on the biggest of stages. A showdown on "Monday Night Football" with the New Orleans Saints is on the horizon. Let's see if the defense is considered good enough to be on the field when the game is on the line in two weeks."

I read the above as a challenge to show they belong on the field more than a statement that "you suck".
