Lamanai put the idea in my head in the Bedard mock thread and I can't get it out of my mind b
because it makes perfect sense for the Browns AND the Pats. There's the thought behind the madness.
1. Mallet fell to the 3rd because the perception of his off field antics (true or false). However in his year with the Pats he has proved to be a good soldier and probably improved his game in the Pats system. He is much less of a risk than he was coming out. Plus I have to believe he's a much better prospect than any of the QBs below Tannyhill. And now that Hoyer is signed and Brady not likely to retire, there is little likelihood that he's going to get a real chance to play significant snaps within the 3 remaining years he has left on his rookie contract.
2. So given all that, the Pats announce before the draft that they have traded Ryan Mallet for the 37th pick in the draft. Hypothetically getting Richardson, Wright, and Mallet would be a hell of a first 2 rounds for a team that has trouble producing offense. Plus this year they have the extra #1 which makes parting with an early #2 more palatable. I don't think a future #1 for an unproven Mallet is possible. But if Cleveland is looking for a QB at that 37th pick, Mallet is a better prospect than anyone out there. And the the Pats on their end get good value for a wasting asset.
3. Now the reason the Pats announce the trade BEFORE the draft is they have tremendous flexibility to move up into the early teens to pick a premium player they have targeted and STILL have those 4 picks in the first 62. Thank you Ryan Mallet
4 Now you could trade the 27th and 31st and move up as high as 10. and STILL have an pick early enough in the 2nd to get a player with a first round value
The 31st and 37th will get you to the 14th pick And if you really wanted to go nuts, you could trade your first 3 picks and get to the #4 pick, and STILL have 2 picks in the 2nd.
All the potential trades into next year and/or trade ups using all the possible combinations of the 5 picks the Pats would have in the first 2 rounds, if this trade were made, would give the Pats the flexibility to move up into the first round from anywhere from the 4th to 20th picks AND still wind up with at LEAST 3 picks in the first 62,, all because we gave up a player that was much more valuable to the Browns than he ever will be to us.
So if Cox is the player the Pats want, then he's in reach now. Ingram Couples or Gilmore suit your fancy, he could now be ours. ANY player 4 and below is in now our range. I find THAT pretty damned exciting, especially coming off a trip to the superbowl
5. Then there is a more subtle but important advantage the Pats would gain......a roster spot. With Mallet gone the Pats will bring in 2 very young arms to TC and the best one will make the PS, and the Pats will go into the season with only 2 QBs on the 53 freeing up a roster spot for one of the many areas where an extra player would be an advantage
Of all the trade proposals I've seen THIS one makes the most sense for both teams.
