Lamanai put the idea in my head in the Bedard mock thread and I can't get it out of my mind b
because it makes perfect sense for the Browns AND the Pats. There's the thought behind the madness.

1. Mallet fell to the 3rd because the perception of his off field antics (true or false). However in his year with the Pats he has proved to be a good soldier and probably improved his game in the Pats system. He is much less of a risk than he was coming out. Plus I have to believe he's a much better prospect than any of the QBs below Tannyhill. And now that Hoyer is signed and Brady not likely to retire, there is little likelihood that he's going to get a real chance to play significant snaps within the 3 remaining years he has left on his rookie contract.

2. So given all that, the Pats announce before the draft that they have traded Ryan Mallet for the 37th pick in the draft. Hypothetically getting Richardson, Wright, and Mallet would be a hell of a first 2 rounds for a team that has trouble producing offense. Plus this year they have the extra #1 which makes parting with an early #2 more palatable. I don't think a future #1 for an unproven Mallet is possible. But if Cleveland is looking for a QB at that 37th pick, Mallet is a better prospect than anyone out there. And the the Pats on their end get good value for a wasting asset.

3. Now the reason the Pats announce the trade BEFORE the draft is they have tremendous flexibility to move up into the early teens to pick a premium player they have targeted and STILL have those 4 picks in the first 62. Thank you Ryan Mallet

4 Now you could trade the 27th and 31st and move up as high as 10. and STILL have an pick early enough in the 2nd to get a player with a first round value

The 31st and 37th will get you to the 14th pick And if you really wanted to go nuts, you could trade your first 3 picks and get to the #4 pick, and STILL have 2 picks in the 2nd.

All the potential trades into next year and/or trade ups using all the possible combinations of the 5 picks the Pats would have in the first 2 rounds, if this trade were made, would give the Pats the flexibility to move up into the first round from anywhere from the 4th to 20th picks AND still wind up with at LEAST 3 picks in the first 62,, all because we gave up a player that was much more valuable to the Browns than he ever will be to us.

So if Cox is the player the Pats want, then he's in reach now. Ingram Couples or Gilmore suit your fancy, he could now be ours. ANY player 4 and below is in now our range. I find THAT pretty damned exciting, especially coming off a trip to the superbowl

5. Then there is a more subtle but important advantage the Pats would gain......a roster spot. With Mallet gone the Pats will bring in 2 very young arms to TC and the best one will make the PS, and the Pats will go into the season with only 2 QBs on the 53 freeing up a roster spot for one of the many areas where an extra player would be an advantage

Of all the trade proposals I've seen THIS one makes the most sense for both teams.

I like the thinking outside of the box, but there are 2 things that come to mind (just from my point of view obviously):

1. Mallett may not be wanted 1/2 as much as some of us here think, especially with another group of QB's coming out of the draft this yr AND the Browns having 2 picks in the top 22 players of the draft. There have been rumors of them moving up/hoping Tannehill slides down with their first pick, and if not, possibly taking Brandon Weeden with their second pick at 22.

2. I would have to assume that Belichick wants to properly see more reps, hopefully live game reps in preseason before he'd even consider letting someone like that go. We all know that Mallett has some good measurables and a rocket for a right arm. He also has lots of experience in a pro-style system that he ran at Arkansas, which helps him here. I would think that BB needs to properly know for himself that there's no way that Mallett would be of any/enough value here before attempting to trade him, and there's just no way to know that as of yet. On top of that, BB has invested a full year in the system. Mallett may somehow still be a potential QB of the future here, as unlikely as that may sound.

It's definitely something to ponder though, but I don't know if we've ever seen any QB's traded so early in their careers like Mallett would be, without actually having played. I would think that if the Browns or anyone else had wanted him bad enough, they would have taken him in the top 70 or so picks last season.

If the demand for Mallett is there, I'd gladly move him this offseason. I just don't know if it is.

Yeah, I have no problem moving Mallett, but I don't think we will get the most value before the draft. He's under contract for 3 more years so there is no need to rush to trade him. I think we hold on to him and if someone goes down in camp or gets desperate early in the season like the Raiders did with the Carson Palmer, then we make a move.

Is Mallett a fit for their WCO? My limited understanding of the WCO is that a QB should be good and accurate on the move. That's not Mallett.

Yup.

If any team were to offer a 2nd I would think BB would jump at it. We only got a 2nd for Cassell (and Vrabel) and Cassell played an entire season. I think the only chance we have of moving any of our backup QBs is after the draft and in the event of injury during training camp.

It would be cool though to have that extra 2nd going into the draft.

How does Brian Hoyer's one year contract prevent Mallet from getting significant reps over the last three years of his contract?

This is a pretty ancient subject, actually. Many have bandied this about.

I'm working on V14.0 of my Mock, and every version starts with dumping Mallett.

I doubt we'd get a 2nd Rounder, but it's conceivable.

Our best chance, in my opinion, is the Fish.

If TanneHill goes early and to someone else, it's pretty wide open.

And if that fool owner of theirs thinks Mallett's better'n the others out there ~ and the crops are pretty freaking thin!! ~ he just might be stupid enough to cough up a 2nd Rounder.

Indeed, it was rumored that they liked Mallett, last year, and even tried to Trade Up to get'm!!

***

I'd be very surprised if Holmgrem gave up a 2nd Rounder for'm.

Seems more feasible that he'd swap a 3rd Rounder for Hoyer, but that's just my take.

We only got a 2nd for Cassell (and Vrabel) and Cassell played an entire season.

Ah, but the belief that that was an accurate measure of his Market Value is a widely-held misconception.

Or...so I believe.

I would've liked to've seen what we could've hauled in if Cassell's Franchise Tag hadn't had us under the Gun.

If he was still under his Rookie Contract, and we had the leisure to take our time trading him??

We definitely would've hauled in a 1st Rounder...and perhaps a good deal more.

I would love to get some value for Mallet, but I'm not sure this is the year. It is not like Mallet was the first pick of the 3rd round. He was drafted at the end of the round. Even after BB shopped the pick advertisting he was going to draft Mallet, he didn't get any takers. Mallet really hasn't shown anything since then, except that he didn't make the news for a year. A second year of staying "good" and a solid showing in the preseason could raise his stock considerably.

The only situation I could see where a GM would cough up a second for Mallet is if they didn't think they needed a QB last year but do this year and were high on Mallet. Had Alex Smith gone to Miami, the 49ers may have been a good candidate, but I can't think of any others. If the Colts weren't so hooked on Luck, trading the #1 for a boatload of picks and dropping a 2nd on Mallet would be a great move for them. Unfortunately, I don't think Mallet and a trade would fill seats nearly as quickly as drafting Luck would.

- Mallett is certainly no less than the 4th best QB in this draft. You could make a very good argument for #3.

- I don't see Cleveland as a fit due to their offense.

- Cassel would have brought more had he not been Franchised at around $10M and in need of a new contract.

- All that said, I'm not sure Bill is too anxious to trade Mallet. Whether we like it or not Brady is getting old(er) and injuries may sneak up on him. Not to mention, as well as he appears to be aging, the dreaded "diminished skills" could sneak up at any time. If we trade Mallet we have no backup QB for 2013 unless we can re-sign Hoyer at bigger money. Mallet gives us a backup who knows the system for 2013 while providing exceptional physical ability at a low cost. I know where we drafted him but I wouldn't trade him for the 37th pick when a guy like Tanehill is going top ten.

It is not like Mallet was the first pick of the 3rd round.

He was drafted at the end of the round.

Wrong. :nono:

He was drafted 10th in the Round, my friend: #74.

I know I'm being a biased patsfan, but Mallett was a better QB prospect than Gabbert, Ponder, Kaepernick, and Locker last year. I give an edge to Newton and Dalton.

His off-field stuff in college prevented him from being a top 15 pick. His Brady athleticism (5.3 forty, horrible vertical jump) prevented him from being a top 5 pick. The rest is there though. (size, arm, accuracy, pocket presence)

This year I feel he'd be the 3rd best QB available behind Luck and RGIII. (Has anyone bothered watching Tannehill? He's worse than Gabbert, horrible thrower)

QB Ryan Mallett Sugar Bowl performance - YouTube

How fast and accurate the throws are, oh my. (when he's not getting blitzed within two seconds)

I'm not sure if I even would want to trade him for #37.

OTG, is your hatred for Mallett because of his skillset (a problem with his decision making, throwing, accuracy, etc) or his attitude?

Don't agree with you on Tannehill. Kid is going to be very good in the future if he's brought through correctly. He's Brady-esque with his ability to slide in the pocket and he's an accurate passer on the move.

His attitude.

"Hatred" might be a little strong, though. ;)

I don't see him trading him. He is cheap and will have 3 or 4 years in the system when Brady retires. Next year Hoyer will move on.

The likely hood that Brady plays the next three years, while in his mid 30s without missing significant time is remote.

Three off seasons of exhibition games and film studies will show if he has the ability to take the reins from Brady. I think he does.

That's a lot of cap room for a desperate team looking for a QB. Mallett's 3rd round pay scale should be appealing to some team out there. I'm thinking a lot of teams perception has softened as the kid stayed out of trouble for a year and has been tutored by a really good coaching staff with a year in a true NFL system.

3rd best QB in this draft class and it's not even close. Tannehill is a bottom feeder that didn't anser the bell in the big games. Was he 6-6 this year? Dropped 2 games with a large lead because he couldn't apply the pedal at the end. Threw the big interceptions late to help the other teams defensive cause. Not the kind of QB I'm looking for to start a rebuild.

There is no amount of convincing that could make me believe RT is worthy of a 1st round grade.

I don't get this silly obsession with getting rid of Mallett......IMO he's the QB prospect we have for the future. Hoyer is a nice success story but if he isn't packaged in this year's draft or for another player then I find it hard to see him being here after next season.

Put it this way; Hoyer will not be a Patriot for the 2013 season and, in 2015 when Brady and Mallett are both up for renewal, a big decision will have to be made.
