    No progress on contract talks

Wilfork says other teams are getting contracts done but thats why the Pats are what they are, because the people here are smart. A little patience is going to be required I think, Patriots own the ball here.

I just hope this doesn't turn into a replay of the Asante Samuel situation. Wilfork is too proven and too valuable (and, unlike Samuel, a team player) for that to happen.

The word is that the Patriots won't extend on any contracts until they know what will happen with the cap situation in 2010.

I'd like to think it wont. Vince will want what he's worth which is fair enough, sport is a business now but I'd like to think a deal could be done if we can.

Given our cap situation, and the status of the CBA, the patriots have apparently decided that this contract and others are better addressed in the next offseason.

I really don't think anyone benefits from a lockout, a strike, a season without CBA... unfortunately, greed and pride get in the way of intelligence and forsight.

#1 - the league is as healthy as any league ever has been.
#2 - no salary cap = no salary MINIMUM... don't know how many players realize some cheap teams will just go way down.

If there is no CBA next year, will Wilfork be restricted or not?

This is Wilfork's sixth year, so next year he's unrestricted, CBA or no, unless the Patriots franchise him.

I know this CBA has caused some wrenches.....but I sure would smile if we could at least get Mankins done sooner rather than later.

Mankins seems most unlikely to be done sooner rather than later. He is a restricted free agent if there is no CBA revision.

Why do you think Asante wasnt a team player? By all accounts, his teammates loved him.

    Disable Jersey

Reading the story confirmed, yet again, that Vince Wilfork is the real "Mr Classy". He's pursuing his interests, as he should, but, even now, he's careful to say that he recognizes that the team has to look after its interests too. That's being a real man! (Oh, and he has a beautiful family -- hello Baby David -- works his socks off for diabetes research and his little daughter is Randy Moss's 'girlfriend'.)

Lurking players and family, please note: Vince Wilfork would be my choice for a defensive captain this year.

    #54 Jersey

The Patriots don't have the cap space to extend Wilfork unless they start re-working other deals.

Also remind me again why Samuel was not a team player?

Frankly, the way Vince has acted throughout, it is these types of people you want to reward because you want to set an example to your whole organization. If you act professionally, we'll reward you type of thing.

I know a lot of people here will say "but he has a contract and he should not even be discussing these things in public". The reality is that with no 100% guaranteed contracts and the likelihood of getting hurt in a very physical environment, there will always be players who complain about their contractual situation.

Vince has played 5 of his 6 year contract already. He has not excessively complained (if at all) and he has only missed one training camp practice because of the birth of his son. Players who act as professionally as this and perform as well as he does not only deserve extensions but should be extended anyway to serve as a message to others in the team that if you play outstandingly and act professionally throughout, you will be rewarded.

I should add that I think the FO still has time to do this.

I have always had a great deal of faith in our management and ownership, at least since BB and Kraft teamed up. I rarely if ever questions moves and decisions, so complete has been my faith in how the team conducts its business.
But, this situation with Vince has had me perplexed for some time and I don't think that team has handled it well. He should have been extended last year.
Now he's entering the 6th year of a deal in system that no longer exists (6 year deals for 1st round picks) and you have the owner stating in public that the team is reluctant to offer extensions due to the uncertainty with 2010. Then we find out the team has been actually been working to get Kazur locked up with a contract extension????
I don't like this "double speak" and find it surprising coming from Kraft, who is usually a lot smarter that that.

By all accounts, Big Vince is a far better player at his position than Kazur is at his, and that a quality NG in a 3-4 defence is a lot harder to find that an OK right tackle.

Vince has been a class act since day one. No arrests for large amounts of painkillers, no off the field trouble whatsoever!

And now it looks more and more like he will not be extended. And then what? We franchise him next year? Does he hold out at that point?
I keep hearing people on this board say that Vince is looking to break the bank but the only one who has emphatically said that he is not looking to break the bank with a record contract, is Big Vince himself.

I want quality people on this team. People like Vince! It seems like the team has determined that Vince is not worth the money that a new contract will demand. Or, he would have had one by now. And I guess I disagree with that. He is worth the money!
It sucks that a quality guy like Vince is going to have to leave to get paid. And I can tell you right now that he will be leaving. If no deal has been done by now, I find it very hard to envision a situation where a deal does get done. (just my opinion I know)

Vince is an exceptional talent and a quality person. These are the guys I want on this team
and I just can't believe that the Pats didn't find a way to get this done before it got to this point.
It should never have to to this point!

Nothing happens until they extend Brady as he will command the most up-front, guaranteed dollars. If the Pats really want Vince, we will know then.
