Best DEs/Pass rushers in 2014 class

That's an intriguing question: after three seasons as a huge disappointment in Indianapolis, why did Hughes finally make an impact with Buffalo? Did they use him differently? And if so, how does that project to the Patriots' defense?

This is what he said:

They let me play, they let me see the field,” he said. “That was probably the biggest thing. That was probably the most snaps I’ve had in my entire career in the NFL, so I was able to kind of get out there on the field. I was able to kind of go and have fun.”

Jerry Hughes trade among best in NFL in 2013

I recently looked into Morgan Breslin -OLB/DE who is 6'1.5 250. He is someone I think could be a late round steal in this draft as a pass rush specialist. The more I read about him the more I like. Combine snub as well though he should not have been.

I definitely would not mind taking a shot on him in round 5-6.

Mark Anderson twice had double digit sacks as a pass rush specialist. The real question is for a first round pick shouldn't the expectation be more than just 10 sacks when guys like Hughes, Anderson, Carter, Phillips, etc etc. can do the same at a much much lower cost? I'd prefer my first round pick to be more dynamic.

Tully Banta-Cain had 10 sacks in 2009. Doesn't mean much.

Kind of circular...you get snaps by playing well. :confused2:

Hughes can get to the QB. He proved that in Buffalo. But that's 4 years into his career. He looked practically like a bust in IND. The interesting thing to note is that Hughes only got credited for 1 start out of 16 games last season. Makes me thing that he thrives as a situational passrusher but can't handle being a 3-down guy.

For me that makes him a nice piece for a defense to have, but not worth a 1st round selection.

I want to make sure that whoever we take has some aptitude for shedding blocks, can play 3 downs, and is at least average in most aspects of the game - tackling, cover, pass-rushing, etc.

But since it's not an ideal world most prospects have flaws. And the ones who have the least flaws and biggest strengths are usually out of our drafting range.

It might be better to get a couple of raw high ceiling prospects in the later rounds and hope one of them turns into a TBC or slightly better rather than spending a high 1st round pick on this particular class of players at the DE position.

Question -- If Tuitt is there at 29 do you select him or trade down and hope he lasts? The problem is that we also want a good TE prospect, and round 2 is probably where ASJ, Niklas, and perhaps even the Fed will be taken. I don't believe that either Ebron or Amaro make it out of the 1st.

I think it bears saying, This draft stinks when discussing DEs, and DTs are not much better,

Outside of one or two Safeties there is not much there, either. But there are numerous fast and smaller LBs that look to be available mid draft. The TEs are numerous, but the valid pass catching threats are few. There are lots of WRs and lots of talented Offensive linemen.

The Pats have needs for front line talent on the Offensive line and at TE and at LB. So pick them this season.

Next year will be better for DLs and Secondary talent. Get them then.

Fortunately, judging by the FA acquisitions that is exactly what BB is getting ready to do.
