This is not without precedent. Belichick got rid of Terry Glenn when he became a problem. Same thing with Deion Branch. No one is bigger then the team. It turns out that Belichick has made the right decision every time. After Glenn left, it enabled Troy Brown to step up and be a great receiver. While the Patriots did miss Branch, he never really came through big at Seattle. No one who Belichick cuts or trades has done better when they went elsewhere. In BB we trust.

Bottom line

Moss not happy

Pats still winning with little production from moss

Opposing defenses rarely had a safety line up over Branch.

Good young tight ends.

Welker/Edelman + Tate/Price. NICE

Don't forget Slater, he may still surprise us as a deep threat.

Funny you brought up that name. I am not saying he is going to be the deep threat WR. but...

On weei they were talking about races between different players and Brady claimed that Moss would beat Tate in the 100. Then he said Slater would challenge as one of the fastest players on the team.

Just thought that was interesting.

Only a blind homer (I am being nice here) would actually think the Branch trade did not hurt us. We were one catch away from the Superbowl which we would have won against the Bears with a lousy excuse for a number one receiver. With Branch, we would have won. I just hope that scenario will not repeat itself because I would never forgive him. Back in 2006, Brady was young and so we had time. That is no longer the case.

letting branch get away probably cost them the superbowl in 06...

Asante Samuel has made 3 straight pro bowls.

Richard Seymour is still playing well in Oakland.

Moss will probably have a monster year.

Terry Glenn was 10 years ago. 2006 didn't exactly end that well for the Patriots after Branch.

I D_I_D....Terry Glenn

They hate their coach...Lawyer Milloy

Two wasted seasons.;)

I am not so sure we can sit here and say with 100% certainty it was "the right decision every time." Deion Branch could very well have been the difference between winning or losing that AFCCG in Indy in January 2007. I bet he doesn't drop a sure 6 points in the endzone.

The alternative was to use Moss', Stallworth's and Welker's cap money to keep him. Branch held out while under contract, they didn't "let" him get away.

The essential problem her is, there is never a game or a season that isn't a must win!!!!

Ever. So we give Samuel the 80 million dollar contract and Mankins the 70 Million dollar deal and Moss the 100 million dollar deal til he's 40 and Branch the 75 million dollar deal, even though he was a traitor and held us hostage.

Now Bradys contract comes up. and we want to sign our 20 first and second year players. and forget negotiating, everybody demands a new contract right before their last season, knowing we'll fold, so we never know who we can really expect to honor their contracts.

then you have the detroit Lions as we sink to the bottom of the league and use our annual 1st in the league draft on another receiver because we have to!! brady's window is closing!!! Draft another bust receiver, there's no other choice.

Somebody needs to stay calm and make tough decisions. Moss was not focused on football, he was a distraction. All he wanted was a contract. If we hadn't had panicky Favre and Childress, we would have simply cut him, because the team needs to stay focused and Moss needs to do what he needs to, to avoid ending up old or injured due to the possible lockout.

Sometimes people's needs diverge and that's what happened this year with our team and Randy.

Now we're 3-1 coming off a huge win, with a very young team and a bye week to start building the next champion, so buck up.

It should be very interesting to see what our cap number looks like when they set a cap for 2011.
With all of the young players we have in their rookie contracts, there should be a lot of room to get back into the Free Agency market that keeping our own players held us back from for the last 5-7 years.
Not that we will go make crazy moves, but BB should be able to go out and find the guys he wants and afford them.

:yeahthat:

Yep.

Also, the problem with paying antything it takes for one roll of the dice because the windows closing and their's no tomorrow is, you'll probably lose. Even if you don't have a major injury, or chemistry problem, or an all star team that just goes flat...there are 31 teams every year that don't.

And if you give every single player the long term contract they want and you don't win...you've bollixed up your ability to draft and acquire players for years and if some of these players were a bit disgruntled, you have very highly paid disgruntled players you can't move.

Nobody invested less in a team than the 2001 Patriots. They were supposed to be a transition team with high character cheap free agents keeping seats warm for 2-3 draft classes.

The best teams compete every year. We're one, Pitt and Indy and a few more. I think it's a winning formula. you have to make tough decisions. Wilfork and Bodden were good contracts, it's too bad Bodden got hurt.

The Branch trade was not one of BB's doing. Branch forced the Pats on that one after lying through his teeth that he was going to honor his contract.

While 2006 didn't end well, the reality is that the Pats may not have even made the AFCCG with Branch on the team. We'll never know because none of us can see the future.

Moss is going to a team where the QB doesn't listen to the coaches and he's been directly responsible for his team being kicked from the play-offs every time his team got there for the last 7 years.

I'm sorry to see Moss go, but his antics made it clear that he had become a detriment to the team. The Pats are in a much better position to over-come his being gone this year than they were in 2006. They have much better talent at WR and at TE.

That is why talent is only a part of the equation.
The difference in talent among NFL teams is small. Teams win games, and the attitude, commitment and response to adversity is what makes winners.
Setting the tone that individual worries come second to the team is probably more important than an acquisition.
I dont know if you guys have ever been on a team where you win but a guy who doesnt get to play much acts like a dlckhead, but that guy becomes a pariah.
BB stepping in and saying you dont do that in our lockerroom no matter who you are can very likely cement an attitude in a team. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind the offense will be challenged to prove they can win without Moss, and will take it personally that people say they cannot.
You must have talent, but attitude means more, which is why every year half the teams everyone expects to go to the playoffs fail and half the playoff teams werent expected to get there.

Jonathan or BB, I forget, talked about that 01 team one day on the radio. They had their plan in place and the plan was to compete for the Super Bowl in 03 at the earliest. That 01 team surprised even them.
