Offensive Series #1 Field Goal

Contributor: Pats1
Time: 10:00 remaining in the first quarter
Statistics: 13 plays (8 run, 4 pass, 1 field goal), 75 yards (66 run, 24 pass, -15 penalty), time of possession was 7:06
Breakdown: 8 green plays (5 run, 2 pass, 1 field goal) for 83 yds. (59 run, 24 pass), 2 black plays (2 run, 0 pass) for 7 yds., 3 red plays (1 run, 2 pass) for 0 yds., 15 penalty yds. lost for the Patriots.

Kickoff: Andrews from the NE 3, 15 yd return, Andrews gets a block from Banta-Cain but is quickly taken down by a defender Evans was beat by, behind the wedge.

1st and 10 NE 18

Result: Run, Dillon, right tackle, 8 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Kight wide left, Caldwell wide right, TE Watson in motion from left wing to standing right wing, TE Rasby down off RT, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded right, SS comes up in pressure coverage over Watson, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light gets an angle on the SLB Boley ahead of the run but loses it when Dillon goes by, and Boley breaks off to help on the stop
Mankins gets knocked into the backfield on the first blow from the DT Shropshire, but Dillon is able to evade the obstruction
Hochstein comes out and knocks the MLB Hartwell out of Dillon’s lane, but can’t get an angle as Dillon goes by despite a strong effort, as Hartwell breaks off and makes the tackle
Neal drags the DT Coleman right and out of the running lane
Gorin gets sandwiched between Neal and Rasby, where the DE Kerney pushes him down and then turns to follow the run
Rasby rides the WLB Brooking briefly outside before Brooking breaks off and attempts to stop a plowing Dillon, with tacklers, with a jump tackle
Watson engages with the SS Milloy on the edge and turns him outside, but loses the angle as the run works downfield and Milloy breaks free

Analysis: Both Light and Hochstein had great downfield blocks on the playside LBs to give Dillon enough room off the bat, but both of the quick LBs were able to break free and at least attempt to take Dillon down. Carrying two tacklers on his back for a good 3 yards, it would take a dive onto the party from the WLB Brooking to put an end to the run. Dillon showed an exceptional burst in the backfield despite having Mankins and a free DE Abraham as other backfield occupants. Already Dillon looks like a completely different runner than he did in Denver 7 months prior.

2nd and 2 NE 26

Result: Run, Dillon, left tackle, 4 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Kight wide left, Caldwell wide right, 2 TE, Thomas down off LT, Watson down left wing, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded left, FS pressure coverage over Watson, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Watson holds the SLB Boley tight on the inside of the running lane, just long enough for Dillon to scamper for the first
Thomas turns the DE Abraham inside before breaking off and attempting to cut down the WLB Brooking, but is only able to graze an ankle
Light gives Abraham a lick before turning the penetrating MLB Hartwell inside, and away from the run
Mankins turns right and quickly drives the DT Shropshire right and to the turf
Hochstein turns the DT Coleman right before Gorin backs right into Hochstein’s face
Neal pulls left and forces the S Crocker, the edge containment, to evade into the backfield, opening Dillon’s hole
Gorin corrals the DE Kerney for a few seconds before Mankins drives the DT Shropshire into Gorin’s knees

Analysis: Shaky blocking in spots, but it got the job done. The tackler would be the DE Abraham, who was chipped by both Thomas and Light but was able to catch Dillon’s legs from behind. Dillon was slowed right at the line because of an off-balance Neal attempting to engage the S Crocker, but failing and slipping right in Dillon’s path. Watson held a great block on the SLB to give Dillon enough room for the first, but a combination of Abraham and the blocker Thomas attempted to cut but couldn’t, Brooking, brought Dillon down.

1st and 10 NE 30

Result: Pass, Caldwell, 5 yard out, 7 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Kight wide right, 2 TE, Thomas down off RT, Watson in motion from left wing to right wing/slot standing, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, LBs shaded right, both CBs 5 yards off, SS 5 yards off Watson right wing.
Blocking: Light executes a perfect cut block on the DE Abraham wide, sending Abraham to his face and clearing a throwing lane
Mankins stands up the DT Babineaux
Hochstein has the DT Shropshire spin away, so he turns outside to help Mankins
Neal drives a spinning DT Shropshire downfield
Gorin gets driven back and then beat outside by the DE Kerney
Coverage: Thomas drives the SLB Boley downfield before breaking off towards the right flat
Watson takes a short out toward the right flat with the SS Milloy in coverage
Caldwell catches the quick strike in front of his face, and underneath the coverage from the CB J. Williams on the quick out

Analysis: Light did a great job of both clearing an arm-free throwing lane for Brady and also keeping the pocket clean by executing a textbook cut block on Abraham. Brady had a quick drop, Caldwell had a quick route, and the bullet pass was spot-on. If Caldwell had more room to work with before the sideline, he might have had a chance of beating the rookie CB J. Williams, who came up quick on the pass.

2nd and 3 NE 37

Result: Run, Maroney, right tackle, 12 yds.
Offense: Caldwell lone WR wide left, 2 TE, Rasby down off RT, Watson down right wing, I-form backfield with Evans at FB and Maroney at RB.
Defense: 4-3, CB on Caldwell pressure coverage, other CB floating off right wing.
Blocking: Light immediately slants into the second level, where he just misses with a cut block at the SLB Boley, but is successfully able to stop Boley for a good few seconds
Mankins cuts into the DT Shropshire from the left, but Shropshire just keeps on moving through it, where he tries to turn the corner and chase Maroney but slips
Hochstein comes up to meet the MLB Hartwell, but has his legs taken out from behind by a cutting Watson, however Hartwell dives and misses at Maroney
Neal pulls right and drives the CB Hall wide, but Hall eventually breaks free and takes down Maroney after his momentary stop
Gorin turns the DT Babineaux inside before Babineaux cuts downfield, where Gorin cuts into the turf with his feet and falls forward, only managing a quick grasp on Babineaux
Rasby stands up the DE Kerney while Maroney runs through the hole to the right
Watson cuts down the WLB Brooking ahead of the run
Evans lead blocks for Maroney, but bounces off a shoulder from Milloy and falls backward into Maroney, who slips but regains his footing and plows on into Hall, the tackler

Analysis: It was no secret the Pats would be running it with force straight through the Atlanta defense when they brought in Evans and kept both TEs out there. A few good cut blocks and some good drive blocks opened up holes. The only blemish came when Evans got a rock solid shoulder from the SS Milloy, but Evans’ rebound only temporarily slowed Maroney. Showing good ability all along the way, Maroney instantly went from laying sideways on Evans’ stomach to standing up straight and forcing his way through DeAngelo Hall for another 2 or 3 yards.

1st and 10 NE 49

Result: Pass, Faulk, dumpoff right flat, under pressure, 17 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, Kight wide left, T. Brown left slot, Caldwell wide right, TE Watson down off RT, Faulk lone RB.
Defense: 4-2-5 nickel, LBs shaded right, NB 5 yards off Brown in slot, both CBs playing off, SS showing blitz right wing.
Blocking: Light rides the DE Abraham outside but can’t keep up as Abraham gradually beats him
Mankins picks up the DT Shropshire from Hochstein, riding outside
Hochstein hands Shropshire off to Mankins before coming out but getting outran by Faulk downfield after the catch
Neal turns the DT Babineaux into Hochstein’s back before also coming out ahead the screen, but Neal is also unable to get ahead of Faulk to block
Gorin rides the DE Kerney inside
Coverage: Watson drives the WLB Brooking in a quick block about 5 yards downfield before breaking off and looking for other blocks further ahead of the catch
Faulk plays the matador to the blitzing SS Milloy, setting up in a blitz pickup look but then spinning away at the last second, before backpedaling into the flat for the catch and run

Analysis: All of the pass rush was dragged to the left of Brady to open up the right side of the pocket for the real fun to begin. With the right flat wide open for 20 yards downfield, all Faulk had to do was slow the blitzer, look for the pass, and start running. When Faulk suddenly spun out of his blitz pickup position, the blitzer, Milloy, was bracing for contact and thus thrown off-balance, buying Brady enough time to side-step and dump it off to Faulk. Hochstein and Neal gave it their best effort, but both were unable to catch up to block. Watson and Caldwell both had decent downfield blocks to open things up.

1st and 10 Atl 34

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 4 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell tight left in motion from wide left, Kight wide right, 2 TE, Rasby down off LT, Watson down left wing, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, WLB pressure coverage over Watson, MLB showing blitz, SS comes up into pressure coverage over Caldwell after motion, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Caldwellkeeps Milloy on the edge
Watson can’t get a good angle on the WLB Brooking, allowing the duo to slide inside and into the running lane
Rasby stands up the DE Abraham before driving him downfield
Light lowers his shoulders straight into the DT Babineaux’s stomach, driving him right and out of the hole
Mankins drives back the blitz from the MLB Hartwell
Neal pulls left and turns around Caldwell on the edge, just to find vacated space
Gorin gets a few knocks on the DE Kerney on the edge, just long enough to keep him out of the backfield

Analysis: Neal could have been better utilized on this play, as his pull just brought him further away from the run and not through a hole or against a defender. Instead, the SLB Boley was free to get a lightning-quick jump on the hole where he, along with the WLB Brooking dragging Watson along, were able to bring down Dillon in his hole.

2nd and 6 Atl 30

Result: Run, Dillon, left tackle, 3 yds.
PENALTY on NE-S.Neal, Clipping, 15 yards, enforced at ATL 27.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Kight wide right, TE Watson down off LT, I-form backfield with Evans at FB and Dillon at RB.
Defense: 4-3, DE Abraham and LB Hartwell swap places, with Abraham in pressure coverage over Watson, both CBs 5 yards off.
Blocking: Watson drives the DE Abraham left and out of the hole until Evans tries to double team, at which point Abraham breaks free and makes the stop
Light and Mankins double the MLB Hartwell before Light breaks off to roam the second level
Hochstein gets a great angle on the DT Shropshire, eventually tossing him to the ground
Neal immediately goes into the second level and attempts a cut block at the WLB Brooking, who turns away just in time for the cut is into the back of his legs
Gorin is beat inside by the DT Babineaux, who can only chase the play from behind
Evans tries to double the DE Abraham with Watson instead of coming up through the hole
Caldwell gets a downfield block on the CB Hall ahead of the run

Analysis: The actual run on this play from Dillon went for about 12 yards and what would have been a first down. Dillon, with his lead-blocker Evans going for the wrong hole, showed some burst by leaving Milloy in the dust, and then carrying Abraham for a good 5 yards before he was dragged down. The penalty on Neal was textbook clipping, a penalty less emphasized during the regular season. Brooking, while attempting to evade the incoming cut block from Neal, happened to turn the back of his legs to the cut, which Neal had no choice but to land on.

Note: Bad camera work on a slow zoom-in. Perspective of the play: upper deck. Fortunately, with the penalty, there was a close-up replay.

2nd and 18 Atl 42

Result: Pass, Faulk, flare right flat, under pressure, 0 yds.
Offense: 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Watson right slot, Kight wide right, TE Thomas down off LT, Faulk lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, SLB 5 yards off Watson, SS 5 yards behind SLB, both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Light rides the DE Abraham outside
Mankins is quickly beat outside by the DT Coleman, so he instead turns around and looks to block for the impending flare out
Hochstein is pushed into the backfield by the DT Shropshire but is able to hold his ground from there
Neal immediately comes out to block for the pass but can’t catch up to the SLB Boley
Gorin attempts a pitiful cut block on the DE Kerney, who simply pursues Faulk right off the catch uncontested, helping to stop him for no gain
Coverage: Thomas evades the DE Abraham off the snap before getting pushed around underneath by the WLB Brooking
Watson goes deep, backing up the SLB only for a second as the play is read quickly
Kight goes deep past the stopped CB Hall, who comes up to help Kerney on the stop

Analysis: Gorin’s “cut block” looked more like a fat man belly flop. Completely mis-timed, all Gorin did was dive to the ground between Kerney and Faulk flaring towards the flat. From there, he tried to roll over and take out Kerney’s knees, but Kerney gave him a quick shove before pursuing Faulk in the flat. By the actions of both Mankins and Neal, who disregarded other rushers to go into the second level and block, it’s obvious the flare was the first priority for the play and Brady. Also, Kight tried to fake Hall into going deep, neglecting the fact that Hall had saw the flare and reacted to the play by stopping and then starting upfield. That should have signaled Kight to engage in a block to stop Hall from being another unblocked red shirt around a helpless Faulk.

3rd and 18 Atl 42

Result: Timeout, New England – 2 remaining in the first half.
Offense: Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Kight wide right, TE Watson standing left wing, Maroney RB to right of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 4-2-5 nickel, NB 5 yards off Brown in the slot, both CBs 10 yards off.

Analysis: Brady got up to the line but there wasn’t enough time left on the playclock.

3rd and 18 ATL 42

Result: Draw, Maroney, up the middle, 27 yds.
Offense Shotgun 3 WR, Caldwell wide left, Brown left slot, Kight wide right, TE Watson standing left wing, RB Maroney to right of Brady in shotgun.
Defense: 4-2-5 nickel, SLB showing blitz left wing, SS pressure coverage over Watson, NB and CB over Kight pressure coverage, CB over Caldwell 10 yards off.
Blocking: Watson drives the SS Milloy downfield
Light stands up the DE Abraham
Mankins drives the DT Shropshire right and out of the hole
Hochstein can’t get an angle on the WLB Brooking, who dives at Maroney but is left in the dust
Neal rides the DT Coleman outside before following his cut back downfield
Gorin rides the DE Kerney outside
Kight gets enough of an angle on the CB J. Williams for Maroney to cut behind it downfield, but quickly loses it as Williams dives and misses at Maroney

Analysis: Maroney would finally be taken down 27 yards after bursting through the hole on the draw by the CB Hall, who was playing well off Caldwell, non-playside. Kight got enough of a block on the other CB J. Williams for Maroney to use it as a roadblock between him and the pursuing FS Crocker, a downfield cut that ensured a first down – and more. Mankins and Light had two great blocks to open up the hole on the draw, while Maroney showed a great burst and speed leaving would-be tacklers in the dust.

1st and 10 Atl 15

Result: Run, Dillon, up the middle, 8 yds.
Offense: 2 WR, Caldwell wide left, Kight wide right, 2 TE, Watson down off LT, Thomas in motion RT to left wing standing, Dillon lone RB.
Defense: 4-3, SS follows Thomas across the line in motion , both CBs 10 yards off.
Blocking: Watson drives the SLB Boley downfield
Thomas comes back inside to smother the penetrating DT Shropshire on the trap
Light turns the DE Abraham outside
Mankins gets a knock on the MLB Hartwell ahead of the run but loses it as Dillon goes by
Hochstein drives the WLB Brooking downfield
Neal turns the DT Coleman outside
Gorin holds the DE Kerney on the edge

Analysis: Great downfield blocks on the trap play, including those on the CBs by Caldwell and Kight. Dillon showed good burst.

That's all I'll get to today. Be back to it on Wednesday.

Box & Pats1, you guys are terrific. I apologize for the lack of time to help out. I'm working today, as usual. I know, I know, my priorities are all wrong. ;)

Even my small contribution last year took time -- yours takes dedication. So count me instead as one of the many admirers of your analyses. In any case, posting in a sticky thread is superior to a link to a website. It gives others a chance to comment on your analyses directly.

In addition to the messageboard vets, I hope Reiss & Curran & Felger read your posts. They will if they're smart, and then Felger will know better than to condemn the ILB's en masse.

The coach tells us some plays were better than others. You tell us which ones they were.

I just want to express my gratitude as well. Reading these breakdowns is almost as good as watching the game, in some ways better. Three cheers for this labor of love.

5 Rings for Brady!! said:
Didn't the dirty SOB O-Line coach from the Broncos move to the Falcons?

I saw a lot of similar action on Atlanta's O-line. I consider it lucky that no legs were broken on our D-line.

You are correct, sir. I believe the scumbag's name is Alex Gibbs. If there is a Hell, I hope to see him there when he dies. That the league allows such dirty, cowardly and unsafe tactics to occur is a complete disgrace. Instead of creating more rules to "protect" the QBs and WRs, how about protecting the true warriors of the game?
I also noticed blatant holds by their OL, against Mincey and/or Woods, during the 4th qtr., which went uncalled. Thank you, zebras, for nothing. What happened to calling the game tight in the preseason, so that the players learn their lesson?

D4 12:39 5:39 ATL 22 10 63 Interception

Score: 6; 10

Kickoff: Gramatic KO to ATL 1, a cluster of Patriots, including Izzo and Guss Scott, bust the wall and force the KR to the sideline where Wilson gets him out of bounds, 21 yd return, KO seemed to have decent hang time.

m: 1st and 10
r: Dive over LG, 4 yds
o: WR to each side, TE flanked to each side, TB.
d: 3-4, CBs soft;
DL LeKevin Smith, Sullivan, Santonio Thomas
LB Colvin, Gardner, Beisel, Banta-Cain
CB Samuel, Wilson
SS Sanders, FS Hawkins
b: Poor camera work as always - Sullivan doubled by RG/C goes down with the RG tripping the RTE; L.Smith drives the RT onto the pile in the middle; The C releases off Sullivan and takes on Gardner upfield; Beisel met the LG in the hole and held his ground; S.Thomas stood up the LT/LG, then the LG released to Beisel; Banta-cain set the edge on the LTE; Hawkins blocked by LWR; Sanders met the RWR by the pile and drove him backwards onto the pile.
a: Gardner is credited for the tackle in the NFL.com play-by-play, but Beisel and S.Thomas drove their blockers back into the hole forcing the runner into Sullivan’s dog pile; Banta-Cain did a nice job of sealing the edge and forcing the play to stay inside.

m: 2nd and 6
r: Off tackle run right, 5 yds.
o: 1 WR right, 2 WR left, TE flanked left, TB, TE in motion to right flank.
d: 3-4, Wilson in press on L WO, Banta-Cain outside over the slot WR, Samuel soft, moves up closer off the motion.
b: Samuel is blocked out by the RWR; Colvin is blocked out by the TE; L.Smith is turned out by the RT; Beisel meets the RG in the hole and stands him up; Sullivan is battling the C laterally right and is chop blocked by the LG; S.Thomas is turned into the backfield by the LT and pursues from behind the play; Banta-Cain starts down the line and is met by the LT; Gardner tries to come behind the hole and gets tied up in the Beisel scrum.
a: Beisel plugged the hole and forced the RB to move parallel with the line of scrimmage; Sullivan kept his feet despite the chop block and scraped the C off on Beisel’s stand; Colvin drove in through the TE to get a piece of the RB; Samuel drove in and got a piece of the RB; Sullivan scraped off the center and was the third defender to get a piece of the RB.
n: Beisel has looked good on back to back plays taking on the Gs in the hole.
n: For those who may not know the difference, a cut block is when an offensive player dives at the front of the defender’s legs and cuts them out from under him; A chop block is a slimey Denver O-line blocking technique where the defender is battling with an OL up high and a second OL dives into their legs while they are occupied high, it is illegal and often results in the DL leaving on a cart.

m: 3rd and 1
r: Stretch play right, 20 yds.
o: I formation, WR to each side, TE flanked left-motion to right flank.
d: 3-4, Wilson in press, Samuel backed off on motion, SS up with the ILBs, Gardner faked a blitz over the LG.
b: The whole line slanted right; Colvin was taken outside by the TE; L.Smith was taken outside by the RT and doubled by the FB; Sanders was sealed left by the LG; Beisel was turned out by the RG (the take down wrapped in the G’s arms after the runner was through was a bonus hold after the fact); Gardner was up on a blitz fake and got screened behind Sullivan; Sullivan was sealed left by the C; S.Thomas eluded the LT’s cut block and pursued behind the line; Banta-Cain pursued laterally and was screened out of the action; Samuel was blocked downfield by the RWR.
a: Standard zone blocking stretch play allowing the RB to find a crease and shoot through it, which he did for a big gain until Samuel fought off the block and brought him down; Banta-Cain showed his inexperience by trailing the play instead of taking an upfield angle to get ahead of it.
n: Colvin took a few games last season to start stacking and shedding blockers without giving ground, both of these plays to the right he has been driven outside by the TE, early days yet or he isn’t as comfortable on the right side.

m: 1st and 10
r: Pass to the FB in the flat, 9 yds.
o: I formation, WR each side, TE left.
d: 3-4, press coverage.
b: Colvin ridden outside by the RT; L.Smith stood up by the RG; Sullivan doubled by the C/LG; S.Thomas doubled by the LT/TB.
c: Wilson jammed the LWR coming underneath, was off balance and smacked by the FB; Banta-Cain checked his rush (too bad, he had a good shot at getting in the QB’s face with only the TB on that side) and pursued or dropped in a middle zone on the left side; Wilson picked up the LWR coming underneath in a crossing pattern, which left the FB open in the flat..
a: Atlanta took advantage of a raw LB corps to criss cross the WRs underneath and send the TE up the seam ; Instead of leaving the deeper patterns to the Ss and ILBs, Banta-Cain chased deep leaving Wilson underneath to cover a crossing WR and the FB in the flat, he took the more dangerous player leaving the FB open; Wilson maintained good awareness and was quick in pursuit once the ball was committed, using the sideline to corral the FB.

m: 2nd and 1
r: Pass, incomplete.
o: WR to each side, TE flanked to each side, TB.
d: 3-4, all four DBs 8-10 yds deep.
b: L. Smith doubled by RT/RTE; RTE stayed in for Colvin who dropped in coverage; S.Thomas doubled by LT/LG, G released to help C/RG: Sullivan doubled by RG/C, steered into LG tripled.
c: Banta-Cain jammed the LTE off the line; Samuel met the RWR; Both ILB sat in shallow center zones; Colvin sat in shallow right and marked the TB out of the backfield.
a: Sullivan got good penetration despite the blocking and may have tipped the ball on the throw; the ball sailed high over the LWR guarded by Wilson.

m: 3rd and 1
r: Delayed run to the left, 4 yds.
o: I formation, WR split right, 2 TE left.
d: 3-4, Samuel in press, Wilson in tight.
b: Colvin set the right edge and was checked by the FB on a feint; L.Smith stood up the RT; Beisel filled the hole with the RG; Sullivan bit on the line shift right and was stood up by the C and chop blocked by the LG; S.Thomas bit on the line shift right and was sucked in deeper by the LT; Banta-Cain stood up the flanker on the line forcing the TB inside.
a: Gardner was tracking the TB’s effort to get outside and was unable to fill the hole until the TB committed, he held the TB to a short gain with Wilson, Banta-Cain, and S.Thomas cleaning up; Wilson also stayed outside forcing the TB back into the pursuit; The inexperienced DL pursuing instead of sliding with the OL helped open a big hole, Banta-Cain, Wilson, and Gardner did a nice job of limiting the damage.

m: 1st and 10
r: TE crossing pattern, 14 yds.
o: 3 wide, 2 left, TE left, slot in motion to right flank.
d: 3-4, press coverage outside.
b: Colvin hand checked by WR on flank and released; L.Smith stood up by RT; Sullivan pancaked by RG; S.Thomas doubled by LG/LT.
c: Banta-Cain ran with the TE; ILBs in a shallow center zone; Sanders came up for the flanker sneaking into the flat.
a: Banta-Cain had good position on the TE, the QB rolled out right to open up his throwing lane for the TE’s crossing pattern and made a nice high throw just beyond where Banta-Cain could have done anything; Beisel dropped back to help, but was delayed by the play fake.

m: 1st and 10
r: Run left side, 2 yds.
o: I formation, WR on each side, TE flanked right-in motion to left flank.
d: 3-4, press coverage.
b: Gardner cut by the RT; Sullivan doubled by the RG/C and taken down; S.Thomas doubled by the LG/LT; LT released to block Beisel sealing him inside; Hawkins avoided the FB; Banta-Cain sealed the edge against the TE.
a: Banta-Cain and S.Thomas slowed the TB, forcing him to go deeper to gain the edge; S.Thomas fought the LG laterally to join Hawkins on the tackle, with Colvin getting a piece in the backside pursuit.

m: 2nd and 8
r: WR crossing underneath, 5 yds.
o: I formation, WR slot left, 2 TE right-flanker in motion to slot duo left.
d: 3-4, CBs soft, Banta-Cain shifted over slot on the motion.
b: RT released L.Smith to the FB; L.Smith turned out by the FB; Gardner blitz picked up by the RT; Sullivan and S.Thomas jammed into a scrum by the other four OL.
c: Colvin jammed the TE off line and followed the TB into the flat; Banta-Cain dropped into shallow left center zone; Wilson marked the flanker; Beisel dropped into a shallow right zone.
a: The Slot WR came underneath cleanly (Banta-Cain probably should have jammed him or run with him - but that presupposes Beisel would have known to drop into center field and not shade to the right, I can’t second guess any of them at this point) and was hit by the QB; Beisel came up and corraled him for a short gain; Sullivan showed some hustle chasing the throw upfield and got in a little pile on fun; The flanker was bookended by Wilson and Banta-Cain.

m: 3rd and 3
r: Pass, interception.
o: 2 wide left, 2 TE right-flanker in motion
d: 4-1 dime, press coverage;
DL Colvin, Klecko, Wright, Banta-Cain;
DBs Samuel, C.Scott, Hawkins, Sanders, Wilson, Hobbs;
LB Davis.
b: Colvin blocked by TE, doubled by RB; Klecko doubled by RT/RG; Wright doubled by C/LG; Banta-Cain blocked by LT.
c: Hobbs man on slot; Samuel man outside; Wilson tracking the flanker, Hawkins and C.Scott deep zone, Sanders and Davis at LB zone.
a: Samuel read the play and broke off his coverage to grab the ball; Hobbs had decent position but was turned around chasing his man.

Score: 6; 10

What Pats1 said, some of the favorite whipping boys looked pretty good. Especially since they were working against Atlanta's real number one QB.

So our Mr. Biesel didn't have a bad series here after all. Not a Tedy Bru but did an adequate job.

How can that be? He's horrible as one thread says.

As I saw it, though it was interesting this evening to catch up with the blogs and read that TBC was working outside and Vrabes inside, so maybe I was too kind to Monty. Still, I callz'em as I seez'em, then BB sorts it out for us.

After an unscheduled event where I was invited to stay overnight with bunches of nurses, I'm a little behind in my breakdown, if all goes well I'll get cracking again tomorrow.:bricks:

Box: I suppose the dog tripped you and you fell down the stairs? An accident while shaving? You stepped in front of a bus? The aliens finally tracked you down?

I got nothing.

Beisel's big play that I remember was when he barely tackled some guy that ran right by him, towards the end of the first half or start of the second half. Beisel sort of pulled on the guy's leg until he went down. Most LBs or Safeties would have taken the opportunity to blow the guy into next week with a wide open hit, but Beisel just kind of grappled at his legs. I thought to myself, who is that total wussy tackler? I was surprised to see it was #52, playing with the slappies.

Hopefully, you'll break down that play at some point along the way. :D

Best wishes buddy, hope all is well.

Any chance we can get pics of the nurses over in the Cheerleader thread?

No, nevermind. That was shallow of me. Remind me in a few days and I'll ask again. ;)

All I can say is one moment some student nurse is introducing herself as Sassy Britches or some such, and the next I'm hearing "take me to your leader."

Now feel free to ask again.

Heh Ring, glad you gave the latest 'who hates Monty' thread 5 stars, otherwise no one would see my lonely rebuttal (knock it off T , it wasn't meant that way).

Box: One of my goals in life is to provide you with a contrarian platform. ;)

Edit: And what a rebuttal it was! BTW, what I appreciate about Arrellbee is that he made the effort to bring something to the thread, not that I agree with him. And likewise, that is why I like your response. I do agree that Beisel was doing his responsibility, and I noticed that potential flaw in Arrellbee's logic, but I still think Beisel is a little soft. I want a LB to knock people out whenever he gets the chance.

Double Edit: In case I missed the boat on something, Get well soon!

I'm glad that your encounter with the ladies in the cute uniforms hasn't taken all your energy. Take care! Mike

Thanks to all for the healing wishes. Just for the record, stay in a hospital that takes in lots and lots of medical interns and residents due to it's proximity to a Medical School - the nurses where nice, but the doctors...oh, my! There are many glorious new reasons to become ill!

And I thought T-shirt was the pervert here! Ugh, what a thought. Take pity on the medical professionals that get to see that show...poor dears. :bricks:

D5 05:32 2:01 ATL 25 3 -8 Punt

m: 1st and 10
r: Stretch run left, 2 yds.
o: Slot WR to each side, offset backfield FB right, flanker right, TB 7 yds behind QB - FB in motion to left side of backfield.
d: 3-4, press coverage, SS 8 yards off the line, FS 10 yards off the line leaning back for a deep fly to center - safeties back deep on FB motion;
CB Warfield, C.Scott
LB Woods, Gardner, Alexander, Banta-Cain
S Andrews, G.Scott
DL L.Smith, Sullivan, S.Thomas
b: Warfield blocked by the LWR, holds his position on the edge; Banta-Cain sets the edge against the FB; S.Thomas holds the line against the LT; Alexander meets the LG in the hole; Sullivan is engaged by the C and chop blocked by the RG; The RT comes out and engages Gardner; The flanker barely avoids a clip on L.Smith by getting his head in front as he hits him from the side.
a: Banta-Cain again set the edge, with Warfield backing him; S.Thomas held his ground funneling the RB back inside; Alexander stood up the LG forcing the RB into the crease behind the C created by Sullivan hopping backwards to avoid the chop block; Sullivan fought off the C and met the RB with Alexander and possibly L.Smith; Woods did a nice job of staying home on the backside until the RB was committed, then coming down the line to jump in the dog pile.
n: If I am correctly identifying chop blocks, I hope BB had a suitably strong message sent to the NFL officiating office after this fiasco.

m: 2nd and 8
r: Pass, sack, loss of 11 yds.
o: 2 WR right, FB offset right, TE left.
d: 3-4, Wood a step wider then standard, press coverage. Izzo at ILB for Alexander.
b: L.Smith checked at the line by the RT; Sullivan tripled inside by the RG/C/LG; S.Thomas was locked up by the LT; Woods was blocked by the FB.
c: TBC jammed the TE and ran with him; the CBs jammed their WRs and ran with them; Izzo and Gardner looked like they bit on play action, though there wasn’t much of an effort to play fake, they were in position underneath to cover the RB.
a: Sullivan up the middle and S.Thomas off the left side were collapsing the pocket enough that the QB wanted to slide right, only Woods had gotten off the line in a straight run for the QB, he got a good push on the FB (McCrary), then QB had slid right behind the FB and into Woods’ arms with no pocket in which to step up.

m: 3rd and 19
r: Run up the middle, 6 yds.
o: 3 wide, 2 right, TE right.
d: 4-2 nickel, press coverage;
DL Woods, Klecko, L.Smith, Banta-Cain;
LB Izzo, Alexander;
CBs: Warfield, C.Scott, Poteat;
Safeties, no change.
b: Woods was turned out by the TE; Klecko was doubled by the RG/RT and chipped by the C; Izzo blocked upfield by the C; L.Smith was blocked by the LG; Banta-Cain was blocked by the LT; Each WR blocked on the CB covering him.
a: The RB started to the left like he was running a wheel route out of the backfield, both ILBs were keying on him and shifted left with him before he burst towards the line and took the handoff; L.Smith and Banta-Cain fought through their blockers into the backfield and forced the RB to bounce outside; The RB bouncing outside the TE’s block gave Woods the angle to break off the block and get hold of him; Poteat threw of the WR blocking him and was clean-up; Alexander and L.Smith got there in time for pile-on points.

m: 4th and 13
r: Punt, 39 yds, no return-out of bounds, penalty Atlanta-ineligible man downfield, loss of 5 yds, rekick.

m: 4th and 18
r: Punt, 52 yds, Andrews returns 18 yds.
n: G.Scott as a gunner blocker did a very nice job, his partner Spann did not even need to help and was able to get downfield and throw a nice block after the reception; C.Scott was one of the two gunner blockers on the right side, they knocked their man out of bounds keeping him from getting downfield to harass the catch; There was also a nice block from Woods on the return; G.Scott showed hustle getting back downfield to put a smack on a guy just as Andrews was stepping out of bounds; The best play goes to C.Scott, I couldn’t see the number (it could have been Maroney with the dreads hanging out) but a Patriot was trying to stay ahead of a guy to block him cleanly, and wisely let the defender go to avoid a block in the back, C.Scott was coming down the sideline and fell in stride next to the released defender, instead of trying to bull through him with a shoulder, he hip-checked him, while pivoting to open the sideline up for Andrews to gain nearly 10 more yds.

Score: 6; 10
