I think with the lack of FA Linebackers in the 3-4 and not a large selection of Corners either, the success of the 2008 Patriots will have to go via the draft where I think BB and Pioli will have little room for making mistakes in thier choices of rookies to pick from and I think at least 2 of thier selections on defense must become good pros and pretty fast for the defense to overcome what it appears to be some big losses outside of the front 3.
If this team is to remain elite for the next several years I think the draft for the next 3 years becomes crucial as I don't see or expect any blockbuster deal or trade from some other teams all pros and besides NE does not have 40 million to work with and it looks to be quite a challenge for the FO to keep this team from falling backwards.
I am excited to see what the team scouts and then FO think is going to be the best players in 2008 and hope they make the right judgements in April because to me there is an ever growing thin line between the Elite team they are now and a mediocre one if the majority of the picks in the draft in the next 3 years don't work out.
The defining time for the near future of this team and its competitiveness does not come in FA this year IMO,Its in April,to me there is not any real guys in FA that would make a huge difference if they are signed unless you count the guys that we cannot afford.
The best teams like the Patriots and Colts have built success through the draft more than anything and this year is more crucial then ever IMO because FA talent in the market is less then ever.
Any major mistakes in picking players in this years draft can be devastating which makes the moves in April maybe the biggest in the BB era.
Its time to see what the team can do to turn 2/3 of the defense into a super one,I myself think its more than intriguing not knowing what they are thinking and the hill it appears they must climb to overcome the losses and age of the outer D (DB/ILB).
