Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

I was there. It was at two different points in practice they worked on this. I saw them working on it at the very begining of practice and then again at the end when they did 11 on 11.

They ran maybe 3 or 4 plays out of it, but ran some more than once. Edelman was in the shotgun with Maroney next to him. They had 3 receivers on the field....Moss, Galloway and Ventrone in the slot. I assume normally Welker would be in the slot but he wasn't practicing yesterday. Either Galloway or Ventrone would come in motion. When the ball was snapped, he'd do a belly to Maroney, either handing it off or keeping it (not sure if there was an option or not)......and then by that time the motion man would be coming in the opposite direction Maroney went in and Edelman would reverse and run an option wide with the motion receiver....pitching it sometimes depending on what the defender did. I saw them run one passing play with Edelman dropping back after faking the option like a college option QB.

They worked on it in both directions, sometimes running the same play but just the opposite way.

It was for the first offense too as they had a scout D out there (with offensive guys the first time they worked on it).....so I know it wasn't just a scout look for the D. It was actualy plays the Offense will run. Patriots offensive plays.

I guess it's not a trick play per se since they are taking Brady out and running this instead of trying to completely surprise the opposing D by leaving him in and only showing their hand right before the snap.

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

I think the Pats will eventually have Edelman as the 3rd QB, as long as either KOC or Walter steps up (Hoyer to practice squad). Whether this happens before the season starts or at week 8 depends on how KOC and Walter are doing.

I suspect that the Pats see a lot of potential in Walter, and how he works out will probably determine whether we drop a 3rd QB before the season starts or mid-season. If Walters seems to learn well in our system, I think we drop KOC the moment BB thinks Walter is ready to be #2.

There is a lot of incentive to make a determination on Walter quickly because if he doesn't work out and BB is ok with KOC as #2, you can drop a 3rd QB before the season starts to make room to keep an extra roster spot open for this talented team.

Problems arise if BB is not happy with either KOC or Walter as a #2. He'll be forced to carry 3 QB's to develop or find a solid number 2.

Either way, I figure by season end Edelman will take up WR, QB3 and Wildcat QB slots in one, inexpensive package. Heck, his salary is probably so low, it won't even be reflected in the cap :D If this kid works out, he'll be a huge value saver for the Pats for 4+ years. This draft class could be the foundation for the new Dynasty.

cool thanks guys...too bad I missed it would have been fun to see. Got to give him a few reps. If all QBs went down he would be called regardless of if we have 2, 3, or 4.

    FAIL.

If he's taking up "QB3" then he can't play except in the fourth quarter.

Why would you run a play that takes the ball out of the hands of the best player in football?

The QB3 slot has no such restrictions since it just annotates the third QB on the roster; the emergency QB on the other hand does: Does not count against the 45 man active roster, but if he goes in the game before the 4th quarter, either of the other two QBs can return.

This is muddy water. It's not at all clear that a "4th" QB can qualify for the emergency QB rule, or what happens if a player listed under another position takes over at QB:

"Provided that a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing"

I think there is some confusion here in this discussion. I don't think people are talking about Edelman as the 46th man (Emergency QB who can only come in the 4th) I think by emergency they mean he will dress as a WR but anything can happen type thing. If we keep 3 QBs one will be the 46th man if we keep 2 we go into gameday with 45 dressed. If we keep 4 which I doubt you still can only have 46 likely you dress 3 QBs and one QB is completely inactive.

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

My point is simply this: the NFL provides a strong incentive to carry three QBs on the roster. There have to be good reasons not to take advantage of that rule, and I don't think Edelcat is, in and of itself, sufficient reason.

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

My understanding of the rule is that:

    (A) You must have exactly two players listed as QBs on the 45-man roster.
    (B) The "emergency player" who is dressed but inactive must be listed as a QB on the roster.
    (C) If the third QB enters the game before the end of the third quarter, the first two QBs cannot re-enter. This is true even if it is at a position other than QB. [This is why Matt Cassel had to remain the #2 when he became Gostkowski's holder.] Having, say, a direct snap to Faulk would not violate this rule in any way.

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

IMO, the important thing is the difference between 45 active players and 45+1 Emergency QB. I believe that anyone on the active 45 can take a snap, and it doesn't make a difference as to the who plays QB the rest of the way. See direct snaps to Faulk, or the Fins playing wildcat, neither of those situations effected Brady or Chad playing the rest of the game.

The only time it matters if the 46th player, who has to be a QB, and identified as a Emergency QB, takes a snap. Rule are generally written to set the lowest baseline, IE a team couldn't list one QB and then use the Emergency QB rule, but they could list three QBs and still use that rule.

I don't know if I agree, I would say at least two not exactly two, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, if the 46th player hits the field it would in act the rule, but JE would not be listed as a QB, and would be on the 45 in this case, so it is irrelevant.

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

Well, patchick quoted the relevant rule; it specifically says "two quarterbacks" and "third quarterback," rather than "an additional quarterback."

In any case, the real question is not, Edelman v. Walter/O'Connell for QB3.

The question is QB3 v. another player at another position who would have to be inactive on game day.

Under the circumstances, I find it unlikely the Patriots would go with just two "true" QBs on the roster. [I also think that it's unlikely the Pats would cut O'Connell this soon, as you suggest might happen.]

Re: Anyone at todays 8/17 PM practice????

I wasn't refering to the emergency QB spot, but now that you mention it, I suppose he could hop on that for a week or 2 if you don't need him at WR. It would give you a nifty Wildcat look in the 4th without taking up a roster spot. If BB did need a roster spot for a week or three, I could actually see him doing this.
