Alex Smith traded by 49ers to KC

For next year, Alex Smith is the best option KC had. He's far away better than any other option they had (including Mallet). KC has a shot at a playoff berth next year.

For the long term, it may not be the best move as it will prevent them from having access to a franchise QB that may be available in the 2014 draft. Nothing is worse than having a QB that is "just good enough"

Are you really trying to equate/compare Smith's current value to Mallett's? One player led his team to a blown short of the Super Bowl last year, and was among the league leaders in multiple categories this year, prior to getting injured. The other might have led his team in a stretching exercise.

Puh-leez. Tebow could lead that stacked 49ers team to a playoff berth. Don't try to spin this trade into anything more than what it is - overpay for a mediocre QB who is nothing more than a game manager.

Alex Smith is Trent Dilfer 2.0 without the ring.

At least Mallet has upside. Point is teams are overpaying for QBs and the market price is set - two 2nd round picks.

This should be easy math. Alex Smith is a QB with a resume that's demonstrated clear improvement, and who showed he was capable of leading a team. Also, from 2011-2012, he's 426 for 663 with a 30/10 TD/INT split and a 95.1 QB rating and a1.5% interception rate.

Ryan Mallett is a guy who's career numbers are 1 for 4 with an INT. He's yet to conclusively demonstrate that he can lead a team out of the tunnel.
