I know its in vogue in lately to throw away our 2nd round picks as if they're entirely expendable when in fact they are not. This is one risk, however, I think we should take. Carriker projected best as 3-4 end coming out of college. He is massively strong at 6-6 300lbs (one of the stronger lifters in recent Nebraska history). He has had injury issues which should lessen the Ram's asking price. Finally, there is void at end. If his shoulder issues are resolved I say get the man here asap. He was, I think, the 13th overall pick in 07 so his salary shouldn't be unmanageable.

All this in reference to Reiss' latest blog, he says the Redskins have contacted the Rams about Adam.

Even when he is healthy he's not really that good. I wouldn't want to give up a 2nd round pick for him. Honestly I'd rather let Pryor try his hand at DE or just draft Odrick.

That guy is horrible. I remember people on this board hyping up this guy and wanting him when we had Seymour, Warren and Green.

He was injured all of last season and did nothing spectacular his rookie season. I don't see how that is a sufficient sample to deem him a bad player. No question it is a risk. I don't see why the Carriker I watched in college (the one who was healthy) couldn't do all the things Seymour was asked to do here. Question is whether he is that guy in the NFL and whether his injuries prevent him from being that. He is still really young in any case.

    Conditional 3rd/2nd?

Nevermind, he played in 07 too. There is a bigger sample than I thought:

    2007 STL 16 30 21 9 1 2.0
    2008 STL 15 23 22 1 0 0.0

In my limited observation of him during his Sr.Bowl, he was very impressive. Whether he can 2-gap, who knows. He was certainly blowing up the o-line at the SR Bowl, however.

Conditional 2011 3rd round pick at the most. I don't want to pay anything significant if he continues to be a bust. And those injuries aren't promising either.

I'd give a 3rd, possibly 2nd if he is on the field for 65% of the team's defensive snaps or something conditional like that.

The only person worth a 2nd is a rookie in the draft. :)

Yeah, there are a lot of if's involved. Once I realized his body of productive work stretches two years and it is nothing to write home about I cooled quite a bit. Moreover, he isn't going to be the cheapest option. He will have something more than a negligible cap hit. I would think a conditional 3rd at most.

Nope. You don't want to pee away draft picks this year the way the board is loaded.

Nobody will want to give up picks (unless the team is really cheap) this year, and we would be best off low balling him. A couple of seventh round pick?

A 2nd for a guy who can't start for the worst team in football? No way.

Absolutely. No brainer. Who is better than he as a 5 technique defensive end at say pick #53? No one period end of story. A steal for a second rounder. Who is a better 5 DE on the board at all? Ordick? Yeah right please. He's better than a healthy Carriker? Nyet! Or the favorite 8th grade retort...No thanks! Wooten is pretty decent but not Carriker.

If his health checks out, sure.

Where people looking at his stats need to also look is 'what position/role was he asked to play in the St. Louis defense' and 'why is his former DC in St. Louis, who is the current DC in Washington, telling Shanny to trade for him?'

Carriker was asked to play NT in St. Louis because they didn't have anyone else capable of stopping the run inside, forcing offenses to double-team him. Jim Haslett who coached him in St. Louis is the Washington Defensive Coordinator - Carriker isn't a fit for Spag's defense, he's a two-gap kid out of Nebraska, not some quick twitch speed freak.

    Yeah!

Never trade picks for washed up or oft-injured players from bad teams!

(see Randy Moss and understand my sarcasm)

Pardon me if I don't find most of your short answers engaging (i.e. "no way", "no thank you", or "not a chance"). I think most of you failed to realize that this wasn't a POLL, but a thread in which you are allowed to expound upon your feelings and support those feelings with facts and figures.

With that said... (curb your enthusiasm)

Carriker was an above average player in college and deserved to be picked as high as 13th in the first round. He has great size and strength, but has been injured. The injury cloud makes him a risky investment, but does offer some up side considering it was a primary reason of why he wasn't on the field.

I'm assuming Jim Haslet is going to make a serious case to get Adam and I don't think the Pats need to try and outbid the Redskins for his services. I personally think Adam Carriker would be a steal if the Rams accept a conditional 3rd round pick in 2011 based upon % of snaps, starts and stats.

The biggest problem would be, for me and my hopes of Odrick being on this team, is that getting Carriker would lead the Pats to feel content and not making a move for him. Then again, if Odrick is gone by the 22nd pick, I would want the Pats to have at least have an offer out for Carriker (of course, with nothing more than a conditional 3rd in 2011).

I don't think you can entirely base how well he'd be for your team based on what he did on another team, especially a team with a different defensive scheme than we run. Having said that, I'm hoping the Pats use their available picks on actual draft picks unless a deal comes along that's too good to pass up.
