Every year during the holidays I eat too much, drink too much (not in that order) and watch some of the 3 Games to Glory DVDs.
This year I watched the 2003 season, focusing specifically on the LBs. I was trying to get a read for the type of player the Patriots would look for to replace Seau and Bruschi.
The front seven in 2003 was so fundamentally strong, every tackle was made, every gap was filled. Nothing flashy but man did they ever make you work.
The 2007 defense may be even more talented and certainly is deeper but all year the tackling has been poor. Some of it is caused by a lack of speed, the ILBs have to fight and claw to gain leverage and are sometimes a step behind forcing them to take swipes at ball carriers, other times it is just pure fundamentals, not wrapping up, etc.
With this offense there is not as much pressure on the defense but they still have to make the basic plays. Personally I was a little disappointed that they allowed 28 points, they had a real chance at being the top offense and defense.
I expect tackling to be a point of emphasis for the remainder of the season.
