So (providing no new injuries) they keep Gaffney and cut DJ when Lewis comes back?
Not necessarily. Gaffney has been available for a while before we signed him and could be viewed as a lower risk to expose to waivers. Nothing obvious with Bill.

Yes just was following Mark Daniels logic.

If they don't dress Gaffney there is nothing else logical about this move other than Bill being Bill.

Let's see if he dresses first. #35 on your roster. But this could be a reward for good practice. Bill has done that before. They still have Sankey on PS.

Its the rules .. they had to sign someone to complete the roster before weekend deadline - based on the experience of players on their practice squad. Look a few posts back for explanation. They (probably) went with a player with lowest risk of losing on waivers - after they will probably cut him on Monday/Tuesday. In Gaffney's case its very unlikely someone would claim him since - like already mentioned - he was out there for grabs since last roster cuts at the beginning of September.

The moves w Gaffney also have some specific financial implications - connected with injury settlement after they released him from IR - so that might've played a part as well. This is from Doug Kyed's article at the time:

Gaffney was waived from the New England Patriots’ injured reserve list Friday with an injury settlement. The 25-year-old injured his foot in the Patriots’ final preseason game. An injury settlement is determined by the amount of time it will take a player to fully recover from an injury. The Patriots will pay him for that period of time unless he signs with another team. Another team could claim Gaffney, which would put him on its active roster. Gaffney also would be free to sign with another team if he clears waivers Saturday. Gaffney can’t re-sign with the Patriots for the amount of time determined in the injury settlement, plus three weeks. If, for example, they reached a two-week injury settlement, then Gaffney couldn’t re-sign with the Patriots for five weeks under NFL rules. Gaffney is practice-squad eligible and also could lock on with a team’s scout team if he clears waivers. He couldn’t sign to the Patriots’ practice squad for his allotted injury settlement timeline plus three weeks.
_

Of course we don't know what he showed in practice since he returned (Oct 17th). Pats have 4 RBs on the roster that are probably in front of him on depth chart - Blount, White, Bolden, DJ Foster. If this is true its hard to see him being active except if they don't trust Bolden and Foster at all in this game (Foster was inactive already the last game, Bolden struggled in few opportunities). By all accounts even Sankey is probably ahead of him but it would be a risk to sign him now - with Lewis soon returning - since he would probably not clear waivers.

Good news about signing Gaffney to 53 - at least one/or both Valentine and Hamilton ready to go ..

I like the addition of Gaffney. He is a true power back and we had zero power behind Blount. Gaffney likes to run right into the teeth of a defense(like Peterson) and all it takes is one missed tackle for a long gain. I actually think his direct style fits our offense best.

Why would he not clear waivers if any team can sign him now to their roster?

Being in the practice squad, he now would have to be signed to a team for 3 weeks guaranteed , but more importantly, the Pats could promote him to the active roster instead of letting him go. Going on waivers he could be claimed and they lose him more easily.

They have some control to keep him if he is on PS (they can put him on 53, motivate him to stay - Sankey recently got a raise - etc.). On waivers they have no control.

10/31/16 - LB Jamie Collins traded to Cleveland

Going strong sending the message across today ..

Apparently Bishop Sankey has been signed by the Chiefs off the Patriots practice squad.
