With Harrison as a potential retiree, we will have many open positions (holes?) at defensive back in 2008. The following are in the last year of their contracts: Gay, Scott, James, Wilson, Hawkins and Mitchell. While there may not be much talent among the six, they still represent an important component of the roster. BTW, I have Mitchell OR Hawkins making the squad.

Of course, Samuel could sign long-term, or we could extend Scott, James or Gay. Any of these would be a significant one in solidifying the secondary for 2008.

UNDER CONTRACT AND LIKELY TO MAKE THE 53 MAN SQUAD
    CB Hobbs, Jackson
    S/ST Harrison, Sanders, Meriweather, Andrews

I expect CB Eddie Jackson could make the PUP list and be added to the team in midseason, and be on the squad next year. He was signed knowing that he would be unlikely to participate until, at best, late in Training Camp.

    What? You're forgetting superstar-in-the-making Denny Poland? :)

[Seriously, though, you have to figure something is up there, if they sign him and then release him a few days later. . . .]

    #75 Jersey

It's nice to have two young safeties to bring along as they've been able to find vets for depth at this position.

Asantes probably gone sooner or later, so I would have liked a CB since a top young one is damn expensive in free agency.

Wilson and Gay are wild cards for both positions, but until they prove they can stay on the field, they're gravy, not meat IMO.

There also are possibly 3 others (who are also on their last year...who could step up and play a role this year..look for next as more significant...) as well as two other rookies that could have impact. I have doubts that any more than 3 of these 5 could have impact, but I think they could in comparison to the probably PUPed Eddie Jackson. The least likely is Germera Williams..possibly too small..a shorter Hobbs..but who knows...a TC and playing strong and BIG could land him on the PSqd. There's also Antoine Spann
who seemed to play a tougher role later in the year. Another who had no TC last year was Rashad Baker and from what I heard, he was a pretty hitter on the field in mini camp. The others are draftee Mike Richardson who I think could be a CB sleeper as well as Larry Anam. Any help or solid signs of learning could help in 08. I really do think a few of these COULD help teh 08 cause.

Sure it's POSSIBLE that one of those you mention could be the starting corner or nickel next year, or be a major contributor. I think it to most unlikely, although one of them being a top special teamer is always possible.

    Williams, Spann, Baker, Richardson, Anam

I think it more likely that Hawkins or Wilson will be extended and contribute and Meriweather would move over to nickel.

This position is clearly the sh!t in the punchbowl that no-one likes to talk about :(

I'm not sold on Sanders as being more than average longterm but he and Meriweather should be alright going forward. As should Hobbs. Which leaves a need of one starting CB and several backups.

Clearly a position of need which is why I was disappointed a few of the DBs I liked in the 3rd-4th round were skipped by us but I guess Bill and Scott didn't like them.

It would not surprise me to see BB turn Merriweather into a slot CB for the 2007 season. I say this because Merriweather has the size, speed and most importantly the quick twitch to cover slot guys, not to mention Merriweather will be extremely physical with slot receivers and will not hesitate to come up and support the run.

I am usually not a supporter of players playing more than one position, or of moving positions. However, I think that Meriweather could be a quality nickel back, and could cover the slot receiver, as well as our future starter at free safety. And yes, he MIGHT be better than one of the corner in this role.

Eddie jackson is depth at the most. He is not a starting caliber player...

Agreed, but he may be a step up from Spann, Andrews, and Baker who we counted on last year. He is also might be an improvement over others we've played at corner in the last two years including Hawkins, Sanders, Poteat and Troy Brown. He may not wrok out, but he doesn't need to starting corner quality to be an upgrade, or be valuable.

What makes you think Eddie Jackson might be a step up from Spann and the rest of the bubble boys?????

Why MIGHT he be? Because we signed him with the likelihood that he would be on the PUP list, costing us some cash.
