He is talking about Tebucky Jones.

You don't remember the Pats signed him last spring? He got hurt in the preseason and went on I.R. He is under 2007 contract.

Will we see Tebucky next season? Is he here for strictly ST duties, or is he a backup S?

I'd have to believe backup S with time on ST. He's just another hat in the ring of Wilson, Harrison, Hawkins, and Sanders. Don't forget about Mel Mitchell too, a ST ace who also got hurt in camp. Then there's Andrews and Ventrone...

1) NEM is serious. He would indeed bench Neal and move our future all-pro LG Mankins to a position that he has never played (RG), and probably isn't any good at, and start Light at LG. This would downgrade the patriots at LG and RG in order to give us an improvement at LT. I don't think the net would be positive, and I certainly don't think the value is there.

2) I agree with NEM that Davis is a major talent and would be a major upgrade at LT. Light might even get beaten out by Kaycur, which I would be fine with. Kaycur was a good LT in 2005, as a rookie.

3) There is no way it make sense for us to bid what it would take to add Davis. BTW, if this happened, Light would be competing for RT with Kaycur and O'Callahan and Kaycur would also be competing with Neal fro the RG position.

4) We do not need an OL until 2010. We might sign late pick or UDFA for the practice squad as we have often done. As of now, we have no need in the OL. They do need more experience. BTW, all ten have been effective starting for the patriots, except Mruc, who won't make the 2007 absent injuries, same as 2006.

OT: Light, Kaycur, O'Callaghan, Britt
OG: Mankins, Neal, Hochstein, Yates
C : Koppen, Mruczkowski

5) We will focus on cap money and our draft picks on upgrading the team.
I can understand NEM believing this means OL, since he has manlove for Davis, and since he doesn't think we need upgrades at WR.

just my 2 cents

Well said. We need to focus our cap dollars on the areas where we have the most need. In addition, Davis has been an under achiever who has consistently had weight problems.

Good call - I wonder if we give Barry Gardner another shot as well, I believe his role was intended to be ST as well.

Scott Shanle, someone who many on this board wanted the Pats to pick-up from the Cowboys last off-season, signed a 4 year extension with the Saints.

KFFL s reporting that Jim Kleinsasser will be released. I don't know much about him but as far as blocking TEs he could be an option at a decent price.

Vikings | Kleinsasser on chopping block?
Wed, 14 Feb 2007 08:39:32 -0800

Kevin Seifert and Judd Zulgad, of the Minnesota Star-Tribune, report the Minnesota Vikings are evaluating whether to retain or release veteran TE Jim Kleinsasser this year. Kleinsasser, who only caught seven passes last season, is scheduled to make $2.9 million next season.

The guys I would like are:

Fletcher
Edwards
Rhodes (if Dillon retires...helps us and weakens the Colts)
Harper (if we don't resign or franchise Samuels same deal as above.)
Curtis

All can be had for around 2 million a year so figure around 6-10 mill of the cap. Leave 4 mill to sign rookies 2 mill for emergencies and we still have around 10 mill to extend players or go for a big FA splash.

I really like your Fletcher/Edwards choices, personally, although I am not sure who can be had for what amount of money... the first salvos aren't fired 'til March 2...

I go heavy on the inscrutability of our front office, but am nonetheless posting a "2007 difference" manifesto -- just things to think about.

You can pretty much count out London Fltcher-Baker.

The Lions and the Redskins have made it publicly known that they will be pursuing him. Which means they will offer more money than any resonable team is willing to offer.

After 4 years on the Bills, you wonder how much he would value playing for a winning team wouldn't you? If it is not a factor, we wouldn't want him anyway.

You're right. Brain fart, I was thinking of Terrell Buckley.

Fred Smoot anyone? Sounds like he wil be let go.

Hobbies: Entertaining on boats...

The guy sounds like a jerk but he would make a very nice #3 CB who could play #2 if injuries occur.

Gonna have to agree with PatJew on this one. I expect Randall gay to break at least 3 bones in TC alone.
Also if Mickens is brought back i'm going to go ahead and say he shatters his hip.

Just our luck.

Tebucky Jones will take out at least three more players.

Some notes from Peter King.. this is going to be a scary market. No way Graham is worth 5 or Thomas is worth 8 or 9.

"6. Free-agency is going to be insane. I think some team is going to pay Daniel Graham, a blocking tight end, $5 million a year. I think some team (rumored to be Washington, profootballtalk.com reported Sunday night) is going to pay London Fletcher-Baker $6 million a year. I think some team might pay Tampa Bay defensive end Dewayne White (60 career games, 14 sacks) $7 million a year.

I know some team will pay Adalius Thomas $8 million per, minimum. My guess is Thomas gets to $9 million. And within four months, he'll be the best addition of the year to whatever locker room welcomes him. My upset special for a no-name guy who will get the richest: Buffalo defensive end Chris Kelsay."

I like that King at least knows who plays up in Buffalo, apart from McGahee. Probably had a good cup of coffee there once or something.

Q & A guide to FA...

NFL free agency: How it works

Q: When can players start being signed in the 2007 free agency signing period?

A: Beginning at 11:01 p.m. Thursday. (The actual start is 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Friday, thus the references to March 2.)

Q: What are the categories of free agency?

A: Players are either restricted or unrestricted free agents. There also are transition and franchise players.

Q: What is the time frame for free-agency signings this year?

A: For restricted free agents, March 2-April 20. For unrestricted free agents, March 2-July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). For franchise players, March 2-the 10th week of the season (Nov. 13).

Q: What’s the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?

A: Players become restricted free agents when they complete three seasons and their contract expires. Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more seasons with an expired contract.

Q: What constitutes a season?

A: Six or more regular-season games on a club's active, inactive, reserved-injured or physically unable to perform lists.

Q: Other than seasons, what determines a restricted free agent?

A: He has received a qualifying offer (a salary level predetermined by the collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players) from his old club. He can negotiate with any club through April 20. If the restricted free agent accepts an offer sheet from a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because it has the right of first refusal. If the old club doesn’t match the offer, it could receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer. If an offer sheet isn’t carried out, the player’s rights revert to his old club after April 20.

Q: What determines an unrestricted free agent?

A – A player with four or more seasons whose contract has expired. He is free to sign with any club, with no compensation owed to his old club, through July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). On July 23, his rights revert to his old club if it made a tender offer (110 percent of last year's salary) to him by June 1. His old club then has until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season (Nov. 13) to sign him. If he does not sign by Nov. 13, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by June 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.

Q: What determines a transition player?

A: A club can designate one transition player (or one franchise player) in any given year. No transition players were named this year. The player’s club must offer a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.

Q: What determines a franchise player?

A: A club can designate one franchise player (or one transition player) in any given year. The salary level offer by a player's club determines what type of franchise player he is. An exclusive franchise player — not free to sign with another club — is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 20, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, or the average of the top five salaries at his position as of the end of last season — whichever of the three is greater. If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, he becomes a non-exclusive franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match.

Q: Can a club decide to withdraw its franchise or transition designations on a player? If so, can it then use them on other players?

A: A club can withdraw its franchise or transition designations, and the player automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent either immediately or when his contract expires. The club cannot name a new franchise or transition player that year. It can name a new franchise or transition player the next year.

Q: What is the salary cap for 2007?

A: The salary cap is $109 million per club.
