PFT: Asante's contract with the Eagles

Although he's getting paid pretty well by the Eagles, he hasn't gotten more than Nate Clements did last year. For all his posturing, last season hasn't produced the windfall he probably hoped for. And there are no other CBs on the market that are in the same category as Samuel. Philly actually got him at a reasonable price.

His press confrence from the eagles, was just a joke.. he was asked if the patriots disrespected him, he says no comment.. Good bye assante enjoy your money..

The gold standard for assessing contracts is three year take. According to PFT his 3 year take is $32M or just under $11M per. Not sure what Clemens got but I doubt it was that much.

SIX YEARS, $57 MILLION FOR SAMUEL

He wanted $10 million per year. In the end, $9.5 million will have to be enough.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network and John Clayton of ESPN.com, cornerback Asante Samuel has signed a six-year, $57 million deal to join the Eagles.

Per Schefter, the deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money and pays out $32 million over the first three years.

The guaranteed money is less than the amount paid to Nate Clements of the Niners in 2007, but the average is higher. Clements' deal is for seven years, $64 million."

$10.2 / year the first 3 seasons? wow

Math wasn't my strong suit, but I think that's $10.67. ;)

The Guaranteed money is less than I had thought, but it looks like his per year average over the first three is pretty steap. It would have to be low in years 4-5 though for Clayton's figures ($8M per over the first 5) to have been correct. But, a lot of these talking heads get the figures wrong. Heck, Shefter initially had AD's contract figures slightly off, too.

And just like that I hate Asante Samuel...

Wonder how much my never worn Assante samuel jersey can go for on ebay?

Add to the fact that Hobbs drew all the tough assignments b/c Samuel wouldn't switch sides.
Is this an urban legend? When was the last time you heard of a player in a BB defense specifying which side of the field he would or would not play on? LT maybe but Asante? Doubtful.

No, it was not urban legend. In fact Dean Pees and Joel Collier both spoke about it when interviewed in the runup to the SB. Asante is not "comfortable" playing on the right side.

In the end, give the guy credit he didn't sign with the Jets

haha, you're actually making yourself believe that? Asante is about one thing, and it's written on him in INK... GET PAID. Arrogant bastard, just like Law.

You are calling him such names based on your wrong understanding of his tattoo.

Do you even know when that tattoo came and what it is about or are you going by what Jackie M wrote in the BG in which she got the facts wrong about the tattoo?

That was the case...he was NOT as good on one side...so he never could switch...NO urban legnd..which is one reason I thought AS was not worth the BIG bucks.

Good for Asante.

His days of being perceived as an "elite corner" are numbered, too, as I doubt he finds the same success in Philly. The notion that Asante is "elite" or is anywhere near where Bailey, Law, etc. were in their prime is an absolute joke. Asante is a solid corner in our system, but - according to Michael Holley at least - had nearly identical metrics to Hobbs, and in some cases, Hobbs was better. He's a playmaker who takes good risks, that's about it, I actually think our secondary can improve without him.

Is it unfair to call Asante a 'system' player?
I'd love for the media to call him that if he does not find success similar success in Philly.
I love the comment by Asante's agent:

"New England has a philosophy that's right for them. New England groomed a masterpiece and put it on the market," said Alonzo Shavers, Samuel's agent.

Or NE groomed a pretty well painted replica of a masterpiece and mounted it in an expensive frame resulting in most mistaking it for an original. :D

We shall see. I get a kick out of the longstanding mantra that the Iggles are a well run, well coached team in the NEP mold. I don't see that manifesting itself, and in a much weaker conference. They may have caused themselves some locker room problems with the Samuel deal too. Westbrook has been squawking for a new deal and worked for free last season because of an earlier overpayment on his contract that they decided to garnish his 2007 salary to recover. McNabb wants a new deal too, and some WR's, so depending on how they come out of the gate he could be carping early on for one or the other, if he's not injured again. They have to unload Shepard because he won't remain as Asante's wingman. And I have a feeling we have not heard the last of the Reid son's family saga.

1. The tat says "Get Rich to This," although actually I think given the unfolding of events, it pretty much meant "Get Paid" all along, all explanations aside. Okay thanks for the year, Asante, enjoy.

2. Now he can get to halfway through the season and say they'd be winning if Brett Favre or somebody was their quarterback.

3. We kinda knew this one was coming, all hopes to the contrary aside.

Eh well.

He's not worth it :D
Agreed. Not worth it. If he would have caught that Eli duck he would have been worth it....j/k.

Philly is the worst place Samuel could have gone! They require man up D and he is a zone guy that likes to slough off his guy and jump other routes.

If he doesn't perform, the animals (Philly Fans) will eat him up!

He just isn't worth the money that Philly "guaranteed". He played soft in the Super Bowl. I can recall at least two plays where he pulled up rather than lay the wood in that game. One was the miracle catch!

Our lasting impression of him will be the missed INT that could have sealed the game!
