A good friend of mine once slammed his putter against his golf cart after a horrible putting display. His putter broke in half and one of the pieces bounced back at him and hit a major in his leg. He almost bled to death on the course.

I thought that had to be a once in a lifetime unlucky act until one of his surgeons who helped save his life told him that was the third time the doctor had to deal with a golf club/artery injury

I'm only funny rating that because I assume he is alright.

The worst golfing day I ever witnessed, and I have had more than my share, was during a company golf outing. The overly stressed production manager (I don't know a production manager who is not stressed) had a severely funky Charles Barkley type swing. Every drive seemed to be in the woods with the exception of the drive that hit the 1" wide hole marker and sent his ball back further than when he had tee'd it up. He finally lost it on the 16th when he had multiple swings which probably traveled a grand total of 5 yards. The last swing popped straight up about 20 feet in the air and had so much back spin on it that when it landed rolled backwards a few feet. He then screamed, " YOU CALL THIS FUN??" "THIS AIN'T FUN" " I COULD HAVE BEEN SITTING AT HOME EATING A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH!!" Then took his clubs and went home. hahaha :D

Great guy but we ribbed him all the time afterwards.

"Ernie Els putting for par...

Aaaaaaaaaand he's out of contention."

When I see a professional sportsman do this my first thoughts in todays age is that he has been nobbled by spot fixing syndicates. i.e People that bet on events happening, like how many shots on first hole, how many putts on first hole. blah blah

Heh, yep Tony, he lives to tell his tale. He has a massive scar on his leg from it though. Men's Health magazine took a picture of it.

Ernie's yips are back in full force. Thats all it is.

I used to golf with a guy who would do that on a regular basis. He'd play pretty good otherwise until he'd get to the easy putt ins. Literally would be a few inches away and once in a while he'd just slam it from being under too much pressure, or something along the lines of that.

So it could always be worse I suppose.. ;)

He should have just quit at that point.

The Big Easy. Weird. Only golfer I ever really liked.

Ouch!!

A few years ago I was putting with a buddy of mine who is a decent golfer. He 5 putted a hole but his fifth putt was with my putter. On the fourth putt I heard a helicopter swooshing noise which happened to be his putter flying over the tree line into the next fairway which broke into two pieces upon landing. :D

At least Ernie kept his cool.

My old man was famous for slinging his clubs into the water. Went through lots of TVs because he'd break the screen (was a hardcore gambler), too.

Luckily, I'm a bit more patient the majority of the time--although I still have my moments and it is something that I constantly have to work at.

It wasn't until I was in my 40's that I got my "golf" temper under control. Can be such an addicting and frustrating game at times. Now if my day goes down hill, and it often does, I just go for the shot of the day or shot of a lifetime. Try to get a hole in one on a par 3 instead playing it safe or something.

I do not get upset, not matter how poorly I play, on the Golf Course anymore.. not worth the stress..

Els conundrum points to the very humbling nature of the game of golf.. one hole you can be a superstar, the next hole you can be a butthole..

Yea same. I was pretty good in my 20s and early 30s then kids 1,2 and 3 came. I got back into it 5 years ago and needed to totally redo my game as I'm in ok shape but just not as flexible. Was very frustrating .

If you don't play/practice 3 times a week you have no right to get pissed. Unless you have god-given ability you will suck. Accept it.:p

One of the things that I noticed during Els' meltdown was that on his 5th or 6th putt he tried to do a tap in from the opposite side of the hole and missed that too. That putt was an illegal putt and he could have been DQ'd at the end of the round if he didn't take a penalty. He was straddling the line of the putt.

The same type of DQ could have happened in the 2005 Masters to Tiger Woods. That was the year that he had the famous chip in on 16 that led to a nike commercial. On Saturday of that tourney Tiger went up to a tap in and tapped it in with the tip of his putter while he was straddling the line of the putt. The Masters' organizers met with Tiger on Saturday evening and after a couple of hours determined that they didn't have a good enough camera angle to say for sure that he was actually straddling the line.

I have a friend who is one of those rare birds who can play golf only a few times a year but still play well. He was a top player as a youngster growing up in Ohio.
