I think these are both decent pickups for NE in that they fit their scheme more than Chicago, and neither being asked to be big-time playmakers, just learn your job kinda thing because if High and Collins are healthy these guys are largely only seeing garbage time anyhow.

But let's not kid ourselves, though they may have been miscast in Chicago, neither of them were good there either. The 2013 and 2014 Bears were horrifically bad defensive teams for a lot of reasons but the failure of these two players to really distinguish themselves wasn't from lack of opportunity (a la Vrabel, Nink, other guys who have been brought up as comparisons). They both played a lot. And if they had been better, there'd have been a bigger asking price for both, whether via trade or FA. Hopefully NE is going to benefit big from the mismatched, jumble**** of a situation that Chicago's GM/coach thing has been the past 4 years and these guys are steals that come with playing experience to boot, but right now that's way more anecdotal based on size/speed than it is based on anything they've really demonstrated consistently on the field.

hicks was riding the bench for a bad defense......branch was not wanted by the bills....ninkovich was useless with the vikings.....there are no guarantees, but the guys who show up to play figure out a way to make a difference....they were both highly regarded enough to be 1st or 2nd round picks.....both were subjected to yearly changes at DC and changes to the scheme

there's plenty of reason to be hopeful these guys turn out to be solid starters/contributors.....with hightower and collins, solid will be plenty good.....I think they're both better than freeny

Sheard was misused in Cleveland and more than a few people on here thought that 2 years/$11m was way too much for a "JAG from the Browns" now those people wish Bill would have signed him to a 4-5 year deal.

there's more than a few people here who blow smoke in the wrong direction on everything......

You never know...good players have a way of getting onto the field.
Agreed of course...I meant it only in the sense that they're not being brought here and immediately placed at the top of the depth chart. Compare to Chicago spending $36m on Trevathan and Freeman, those guys are day one starters there.

Probably there are incentives that would raise his future salary

Probably the guy who reported 3 and 12 was full of ****.

Nah, the guy was probably told 3 years 9 mill with a 3 mill gurantee, and "heard" 9+3 and assumed that the guarantee/SB was not inclusive.

I thought that as well but didn't see any bonus money as part of the deal.

Ninkovich never played for the Vikings. He played for the Saints and the LOLphins.

Laurinatis got a 3 year/ 8.5 Million contract.

Laurinatis' skill were degrading, but he is better than McClellin now.

Yeah, Shea has "upside", however it was very possible to get a cheaper contract. Shea McClellin should have never received this contract offer this year.

I'm not sure what it was they saw, but clearly they saw something. And it's not like they don't have a track record of bringing in front 7 castoffs and making them studs, at least for a while—a trend that goes back to Mike Vrabel.

- You would think the Pats under Belichick would make better decisions on FA's.
- It's been over a year since they won their last LomBrady trophy.
- They've only won 4 SB's with Belichick in charge.
- They've only had 15 straight seasons with the best record in the AFCE.
- They've only averaged 11.7 wins per season since he arrived.
- Get rid of the bum. He doesn't know what he's doing.

It's the drafting of WRs at which Bill completely sucks; he's somewhat better at signing them as free agents.

My notes: The original 12 million consists of

$2.5 million signing bonus
$5.05 million in total salary
$500,000 in offseason workout bonus
$1.2 million in 46-man active roster bonuses
$2.75 million in incentives

Laurinatis was the worst ILB in the league last year
