Do we upgrade our WRs this offseason?

You watched the game on Sunday and came away with the idea that the WR is the position that needs to be upgraded first and foremost?

If the Oline gets fixed, Brady gets back to being able to shred any and every defense with his current supporting cast on offense.

Oline is by far the #1 priority.

Re-sign Solder. Use two top draft picks for guards. Oh, we did that in 2015, and our passing game was the best in the NFL before Solder and Lewis went down.

Every year posters want a top level wide receiver. And every year, we have one of the top offenses in the NFL without a top level wide receiver.

Our offense was just fine before the injuries to Solder, Wendell, Lewis and Blount.

SOME THOUGHTS ON WIDE RECEIVERS

1) AMENDOLA will play for us. It would be somewhat crazy to take him away from Brady at this point. He will restructure to save a bit of cap room, likely taking a minor cut in compensation. He is our #2 WR, and #3 receiving target.

2) EDELMAN is our #1 WR. Brady is fine with that.

3) MARTIN has been extended for a reason. He is now our #3 WR.

4) We would be paying Lafell $2M of new money to compete to be our #4 WR. He could be cut, or not. He probably will be. For $2M, we can probably get a better #4, or not. Also, we have Gibson, Harper, Tyms, Dobson and Boyce all coming back to camp.

BOTTOM LINE
We have one the very best passing games in the NFL with Gronk, Lewis, Edelman, Amendola and Amendola. We need a bit more to go into the season. Perhaps, we'll draft a competitor or pick up a FA or two. But I don't think that Belichick would be unhappy with Gibson as our #4, or whoever might beat him out from what we have or we might pick up as a low level free agent.

The best way to improve our passing game is to have a healthy Solder, a healthy Lewis, a healthy big RB (likely Blount again), and an improvement at OG. Perhaps Mason, Jackson and Kline will improve enough to be that answer. Even getting Develin back will be helpful.

What we need is a better #2 tight end.
Gibson was a 1 year deal and Boyce is long gone.

Sure, we need a LT and a RB. Oh yeah. We have Solder and Lewis coming back.

Lewis is a 3rd down back, we need a power back who can move the chain and hurt defenses. Tackle may not be an urgent need but Solder has 2 years left also I'm ok to bring competition to either him or Vollmer. A competent swing tackle is unlikely to come out of the draft but that need to be addressed because Cannon stinks. At this point the interior of the O-line is not a sure thing either but I think there's enough tape and on field performance to have more faith and patience in Stork, Mason and Jackson.

WR is my main concern, need to double dip again or spend some money on FA, I would like to see 2 names that fit at least in a "above jag" ranking.

Unless you're developing a magic potion to prevent Edelman/Gronk/Amendola from getting injured the other receivers on the roster should be better if we plan on winning the SB.
Every team has injuries every year.
That really had nothing to do with the concept that the best use of the resources of a team that had tom Brady is to improve the areas he is least involved in.
The success of this team has never been driven by who is playing WR and in fact doesn't even correlate.

You missed the first part of the season when our passing game was the best in the NFL. Of course, that was before we lost Solder and Lewis.
You make a very good point here.
The problem with this team was depth and the quality of the next man up.
Now it was made worse by the fact that we list so many players.
We ended up with a washed up Steven Johnson and Brandon bolden playing running back. We ended up with a good RT out of place at LT and a guy who just kinda sucks at RT.
Those 2 issues right there were probably the difference in winning the SB or "only" being in the final four.

If LaFell can make a comeback then I think they'll fine as long as line plays well. Wide out was not the problem Sunday.

Actually it was. A lot of attention has been focused on how poorly the offensive line looked however the Broncos were able to easily cover our receivers too.

WR was a major problem. The smurfs couldn't get off coverage. A big target makes this situation better. It becomes a post up. That is why I spend on the 6'6" Coby Fleener. He caught 54 this year and 51 in 2014. He has had 10 receptions against us in the two games in 2014 and 15 and 9 receptions in the last two NE/IND. playoffs. In the 2014 game he was 7 targets for 7 receptions for 144 on our SB winning Team. How does a 4.45 40 sound at 6'6" and 251lbs? 7.02 3 cone.He is our AH "H" back without the mayhem. Blocking?......... Not so much. Maybe better now than in the past two years. Best 'H" opportunity since AH.

If you don't think it matters who plays WR I have some beachfront property I think you'll be interested in.

You know as well as I do that is not what I said.

We need a WR that can give us what Lafell did in 2014.

the reason they couldn't get open was because the broncos were applying pressure up front without blitzing. they just dropped an extra guy into coverage. again it all comes down to the o-line. if the o-line does its job, Wade goes blitz happy and more of our WRs get open.

Coming away from this game where your main thought is "We need better WRs" is as reasonable a reaction as coming away from it thinking we need better cornerbacks. Sure, we can always do better at all positions, but if WR is way up there on the list, after watching that game, there is no future in scouting for you.

I love ya', but ya blew it.

We don't need an 80 catch, 1000 yds, 10 Td outside WR. We just need someone who can keep the D honest and who would require safety help on deep routes. Safety's don't respect guys like Lafell and he always gets 1 on 1 deep coverage, and rarely beats it. If we get a guy who requires safety help it will open up routes for Gronk and others.

A guy who can occasionally beat man coverage down the sidelines....Tyms was kind of like that guy.

Tyms did it like once we need to see a little more before I'm sold.

LaFell will likely be replaced. That being said, when the line gives your QB 2 seconds or less to throw, it is difficult to respect downfield threats.

Clearly Bill takes Tom for granted and thinks he's some kind of robot machine otherwise he would get him a guy to help him go down the field in 1 play instead of what normally takes 6-10. We simply don't have that guy, nobody can say otherwise because they are wrong and are in denial.

Gronk is on full life support on a weekly basis because he's the only one who stretches a game and thus takes punishment no normal man could take that often.

It's not fair on Tom nor Gronk but Bill obviously sees otherwise.

LaFell not to be confused with a down field threat in fact he was No! Threat at all. I would drive him out 0f town right now LaFell is what he is there is nothing more to see.

I'm with ya. I'll ride shotgun
