Keshawn Martin Signed To 2 Year Extension

He provides decent enough amendola insurance if they decide they need to move on from his current salary.

These are the moves that keep the Pats ahead of other teams.

I figure that none of the trinity of Harper, Dobson and Amendola are sure things, for one reason or another.

Dobson is done in New England, for sure. It's a bummer because he and Thompkins looked so promising in their rookie years, especially early.

Amendola is quite valuable on special teams and as a sure-handed receiver that understands how to read the defense on the fly and get into the correct route. His cap number ($5M in 2016 and $6M in 2017) is a bit high, but not out of line for a #3 receiver relative to the expected cap in 2016 ($150M to $153.4M from the December owner's meeting reports.) I expect him back.

Harper will have to fight for a job, but he'll have to separate himself from the usual gaggle of FAs and UFAs that the Patriots bring in. Without a first round pick, I doubt the Patriots will use a pick on WR, so Harper has a leg up on competitors.

The 2nd through 5th round picks are critical to get right in 2016. OL & LB top the list for me.

I'd be shocked if DA is back @ $5m next year. It's a lock he won't see $6m in 2017.

He'd take a pay cut to stay. I expect a deal will get done to keep him. As Brady's time grows shorter, it's not time to mess around with unproven guys, and we know how much BB appreciates a sure-handed kick returner.

These figures already were a pay cut for Amendola, so who knows if he'll do it again.

I was looking at the cap situation less than an hour ago, as I was comparing it to Denver's (they signed Wolfe to a 4 year extension). If the cap goes up significantly, as is believed, and if the couple of players I looked at are cut (I focused on Amendola, Mayo and Chandler, just to look at numbers), the Patriots could easily have more than $20m in cap space with almost no casualties.
We would also save cap space initially by extending Hightower and Cha. Jones, they're both around $7.7M in salary next year, the cap hit would drop quite a lot for the first year on an extension.

Ive never been a Dobson fan but he might show up in a contract year.

Love Martin, and I'd like him a lot more if the refs actually let him play the ****ing game and not flag every big catch he makes.

The questions is really, what is the market for Danny Amendola? He probably can't get $11M over two years from anybody with his age and injury history. It's similar to Welker's situation only Amendola has a lot less leverage.

Well deserved, one of the guys that stepped up when needed. He is multi faceted as well, a key to being on BB teams.

As far as Dola goes, I think he was huge during the season when JE went down. I would try everything possible to keep him as he is a proven reliable (to make a catch) receiver.

Ok, that tells me that the Patriots (at least currently) have 3 'roster level' WRs all but locked in for training camp next season:

Edelman
LaFell
Martin

That makes me wonder how much slot work Martin's going to be getting this offseason, because I think the team will consider Amendola's numbers high for a guy who can't stay healthy.
What makes you think LaFell is safe?

I've seen enough of Dobson. I know DA is injured more than many would like, but since the playoff run last year, that's a guy who's made so many clutch catches. He plays hard, by all accounts he's an excellent team player and he contributes at a high lvl on ST. He's not Edelman, but he can be trusted in that role if needed. 5M$ is a lot for a 3rd/4th option, but the team is better with him than without him if the money fits. I hope he's back. But I understand if he isn't.

If Josh becomes HC in Titans and you got BoB in Texans. Infact they wouldn't have a better market ever...

Agree, if Amendola doesn't take a big pay cut he will likely be gone and the team will replace his production with Martin.

What makes you think LaFell is safe?

  1. He was quite good in his role last year, once he got up to speed
  2. He'll be making less than $3m
  3. No workout bonus

I think it would take something either behind the scenes (i.e. that potential issue with his comments earlier this season), or something in the near future (multiple surprising signings, for example), for them to just cut him loose before training camp.

I love the move. Love what I've seen from Martin this year so far, I'm really excited that they have locked him up for two more years at a reasonable salary. Even if Danny was gone next year, if LaFell could get it together and return to his production from year 1 (training camp probably helps that), Edelman-LaFell-Martin is a solid 1-2-3.

Its closer to 4 then 3 ;)

Please let that be Marvin Jones.

I think you're looking at his cap hit, not his actual income.

According to OTC
Base salary $2.4m
Roster bonus $400k

According to Miguel
Base salary $2.4m
Roster bonus $275k

Both have the $1m carryover from the signing bonus, but that's cap hit, not salary.
