Edelman: Broken Foot, Likely Back for Playoffs

I understand your thinking but you really don't want any rusty players out there for your 1st playoff game.

It's pretty simple from my view.

If he is 100% healed he plays Week 17 a partial load. If he isn't ready, he doesn't play.

exactly. lafell was horrible his first game back and needed more reps to get comfortable again.

Yeah, but it's not like they wait for a "ready" light to pop on. The longer he rests it, the better off he is.

But you know, if the conversation come that time is whether to play him against Miami, I'll be pretty happy that's the conversation, if you know what I mean.

If we've learned anything from listening to BB and LaFell about returning from a foot injury, "readiness" is a process. Because he missed camp, LaFell had to get his conditioning up to snuff but clearly his timing was way off. Speculating here but since JE has been playing, I would assume (dangerous word) that his conditioning and timing would be much farther along than LaFell's thur requiring less time to recoup whatever he lost. The main concern- that you point out is that his foot be structurally sound as he prepares to play.

Coupled with th injuries they are dealing with, I think their remaining schedule is pretty challenging. 15-0 going into MIA would be pretty incredible.

Yea. If LaFell plays like normal LaFell the Pats score 40 in that game

I'd be happy to see him come back for the first playoff game to shake the rust off

Oddly, the Patriots have struggled more in the divisional round than the AFCCG in all four championship seasons. I'm not sure you can approach that game as rust removal exercise for Edelman. If he is ready to return in six weeks and the team feels he needs a few reps to get back in the swing of things, he'll get them.

If it happens that way and all is well, that would be great.

The sooner a guy comes back from this kind of injury the more vulnerable he is to a refracture.

With the current projected timetable, I'd be happy to see him come back for the first playoff game to shake the rust off, and then be fresh, rested, healthy and strong for the championship game and Super Bowl.
When he is ready to play he should play. By your explanation he shouldn't even practice until afccg week. He won't be able to make an impact. And if he can practice then he should play. The last week or 2 of the season should be his preseason and he should get some game action. Provided he is healed and ready.

We all know how gr8 Edelman has been, and it becomes even more painfully obvious in his absence just how important he is to the Pats offense.

He is Brady's safety valve and security blanket every bit as much as Wes was, if not more.

If a young Edelman was available in the draft I have to believe he gets picked in the 1st round easily.

I hope, and I'm sure BB is way ahead of me, that the Pats are scouring the bushes for a guy with his skill set to groom as his eventual replacement.

They have 2 slot receiver & more candidates already. One on the 53, the other on the PS.

It did take some years for Edelman to learn the position and become Edelman. And while people say the Patriots aren't patient with young WRs, they WERE patient with him. You could see why from his first training camp -- a combination of great quickness and to-the-limit effort.

So, they just have to scour the bushes for another guy with a sub-4.00 shuttle time and Brady-level competitiveness? ;)

That is why I am AGAINST some retread pickup in an attempt to replace my man, The Squirrel. The Pats have not one but two backup "slot receivers" on the payroll, not counting Amendoler. Martin on the 53 and HAApaah on the PS. These kids have been practicing that role in the patriots offense since July. Start with Martin if healthy since he's on the 53. If he can't cut it, consider Harper.

Why wouldn't he play in the final game if he is ready? He will be much more ready for the playoffs if he plays football.

The final game will most likely be a meaningless one. Brady will probably not play.

But I did hear some negative news. One doctor commenting on Edelman's Jones fracture, confirmed the 6-8 week time frame for recovery. However he added something I hadn't heard before. Studies have shown that there is a 20% chance of the bone re-fracturing after surgery. That is NOT what you want to hear.

Hence, have him come back for the first playoff game. The extra bye will help.

He may have a little rust but will not take him long to knock it off. It's only two months.

I've got to admit, I'm not even remotely concerned about Edelman--unless that concern is him being out for the year. As Andy said, they'll start to work him into practice if/when the time comes. That will help to knock any rust off, and let's remember--even a "rusty" Edelman is better than no Edelman at all.

For the moment, we may as well all try to put it out of our minds until Christmas time. By then, we should have some kind of hint as to how he's progressing, and whether or not it's even feasible to expect him back for the postseason. Even then, it may not be known until he sees real, full speed practice action as to how his foot responds and if any setbacks occur.

I'm wondering how common that is though, particularly after foot surgeries (specifically for athletes)?

I believe the recovery time could be up to 6 months if he re-injures it again, but I don't know how long that risk presents itself.

An interesting question. If the Pats are undefeated, have the division, the bye, and the first seed locked up, do they play all their starters in the last game (or even the second to last game, possibly)?

The Dobson era has begun, prediction for the 2nd half of the season:

500 yards
3 TD's

Foolish..

I'll give him 5 TD's and 490 yards :)

YES. 3 Quarters if we are ahead. Whole game otherwise. Don't take the foot off the gas.

Brady will play. But whether he does or not is irrelevant to Edelman getting game time in before the playoffs.
