OT: Sean Payton possible next Dolphins coach?

Not open for further replies.
I honestly dont think he gets canned this season. I think he has enough good will built up that he has one more year. It is like BB to a lesser extent. Would anyone seriously be calling for his job if next year we went 5-11?

Lol, in this forum? Hell yea.

Good move for who? Certainly not Payton.
Not sure why Sean would want to work for Irsay and Grigson ....
Sean forgot more football than Grigson knows ...........
No reputable coach would want Grigson shopping for their groceries.

Coaches who have options don't want to come to the AFC East. Facing Brady and Belichick twice a year is too daunting. NY Jets, Miami, and Buffalo have become coaches' graveyards since BB set up camp in Foxboro.

forgot He has a home in Westlake near Dallas.

Fortunately, Garrett just signed an extension

Did anyone know he was born in San Mateo (Brady's hometown)? He also starred at Eastern Illinois at QB (Garopollo). Interesting.

A Saints fan perspective, and allow me to clarify a few misconceptions, perhaps:

A. The Saints front office is far from "incompetent," Payton's autobiography talks at great length about why he took the Saints job even in the face of so much difficulty in 2005 was because of how forthright and professional Loomis and Benson were with him. People forget, but before Payton this was still a fairly competitive team under the same leadership otherwise, they were at least in the thick of the playoff hunt most years even with one of the worst head coaches in football (Jim Haslett). But because it's the Saints and because of their history people are very quick to jump on the assumed "incompetent" label but I'd say that has not been the case for many years, at least not since Ditka was around.

B. The power struggle with Benson's family is over. He won. There's nothing more to that. Benson's "young wife" is nearly 70 years old, a respected community figure and in general a very well-thought of person. She is not just some golddigger. Look into the history of the kids in question though (specifically Rita LeBlanc) and it will be very obvious why they had to be shown the door.

C. Sean Payton is not what he used to be. I would hesitate to call him a total burnout at this point, but it's close and I truly do feel he is at least burned out as far as the Saints go. He used to be daring, aggressive, innovative. Now he's like run, run, pass, punt, and chew out the defensive coordinator. His teams used to have laser focus, now they are a disorganized mess weekly. Payton is so oblivious on the sidelines he did not even realize Brees had sustained a relatively major shoulder injury during a game until after the game was over. He played Colston most of the game yesterday despite the guy having a separated shoulder so bad he could barely even grip the football.

And there are far too many rumors of SP's pill-popping and heavy drinking over the years to ignore. There have been rumors of him being drunk at team practices and meetings. His wife tossed him out for running around on her, he's known to chase all the young girls and do the party scene. It is fairly clear he has a substance abuse problem. Those things were easy to ignore when the team was winning, but now they're not and it's just an ugly look.

I think if you visited the Saints forums you'd probably be surprised to see how many people kind of want him gone. He arguably hasn't been "THE Sean Payton" since he came back from his suspension in 2013, and arguably he wasn't even the same before that, when the federal investigation over him supposedly stealing vicodin all came to light. I think the fame and money got to his head a little bit.

My personal hope is that we can move on from him at the end of the season. Bring in a good defensive-minded head coach who can develop some of the real good young talent we've got on defense and hope Ireland hits another home run with the draft (I know it's weird to say you hit a home run in the draft when you're 1-4 but it's the honest truth). Stick with Brees for another year while you improve the o-line and groom Garrett Grayson for 2017. But that's just MO.

Thanks for the insight! We can all agree that he is a good fit in Miami then :)

You do know Brees got a 30mill cap hit next year right? And you save 20mill if you release him. Alot of stuff to fix in Saints and salary/cap is one of them, getting 20 mill alone from Brees is a good place to start.

I hope not- he actually might know what he's doing.

That's horrible for them then. Grigson might be one of the worst GMs in the league.

Payton to the Colts? No. Please no. Just no.

As you say, Grigson is absolutely horrible as a GM. He of course was fleeced by Lombardi when he sent a 1st round choice for Richardson. Apart from Hilton, his drafts have been terrible. When he selected WR Dorsett in the First Round this year with all of his defensive and OL needs, it reminded me of McMillan's drafts with Detroit.

I know Luck is having a bad year, but I think if he had a good Coach/GM (like, say, Payton) surrounding him with talent Luck could be a very dangerous quarterback, especially if he had, say, an offensive line.

Thank goodness for Grigson!! Woo Hoo, Grigson!! Let's make him lifetime GM of the Colts!!

Interesting read from the local perspective regarding SP, I had a feeling he wasn't the same since before the Bountygate **** flared up. They just don't seem as hungry as they used to, back when they were getting their 5000 yards a year of offense, and no D to show for it. I think Greg Williams tore that franchise a new a-hole from the outside in, and was let off the hook for it (Compared to the "BB is the Devil!" ideology). The team got older during all of the suspensions, legal fights (Vilma, a true Jet), and general turmoil. No wonder they couldn't get their feet back under them. I thought for many years that he would be able to step into BB's role with ease. I now know that is not the case. JMcD is far more advanced as a coach than Payton is now. For one reason, SP can't handle the swinging ----- Gate of the NFL the way a Bill Belichick can.

Coaches with options don't go to Miami to work for Stephen Ross. That rules Payton out.

Yeah, Payton getting offered the Colts job would have to be a real struggle. On one hand, it's not often you get a chance to coach someone like Luck. That alone might be the kind of trump card that outweighs the numerous other red flags in Indy.

But OTOH I have to think that all the weird stuff happening with Pagano is a huge red flag to coaches around the league. Pagano's being hung out to dry by a terrible GM who appears to have the owner's favor. Any coach going in there has to know he's being set up to fail by an incompetent buffoon who can't draft, consistently misses in FA, and still somehow has the owner's ear.

The fins would probably fire him after a year, is there another organization that throws money around like Miami and never has anything to show for it?

From 1993 (first year post-Swilling) to 2005 (Last year pre-Payton), the Saints had just 2 winning seasons.

On this forum? Probably.

I can just imagine the rockheaded draftniks complaining that his Draft incapacities are to blame. Then the inveterate Belichick haters would step forward to say that you need a 'players' Coach who is friendlier and understands the new generation of players. They would say the "game passed him by", just like the fools did to Paul Brown and Don Shula.
