Swapping firsts is never going to happen, but in the interest of the thought experiment, I'd say it depends on Revis' contract. If we have him on the deal we had him on for 2014, I'd rather keep Revis and #32. We've gotten some really good players towards the end of the first round before (Mankins, McCourty, Hightower) and I doubt you're going to get a much better player than Revis at #6. That said, if Revis is counting $21 million against the cap like he would be for us under the Jets deal, I'd rather have the 6th and the comp pick, as that's a crippling number.

Comparing this to Briggs is bullsh.t, this is more like the 49ers saying they would love to have Sherman, then leaking the specifics of a huge deal to their beat writers, them going ahead and signing him away from Seattle.

If the Pats have insight then so too do the Jets. If so, they'd be wise to just trade the pick away before they lose it. IOW, if tampering charges were going to happen .... we'd already know about it.

Unless there is proof that the Jets contacted Revis before he was released, there is no chance the Pats will be swapping first round picks with the Jets. Not a chance.

Hold on. Wasn't there a picture going around Tuesday from Revis's camp of him in broad daylight wearing a Jets hat, holding a Jets helmet? But the deal was supposedly only "agreed" on at 930PM.

I agree, its a pipe dream that this happens, but there was definitely tampering going on here.

I would take the pick because:
1. As you mention, the cap cost difference is significant. While the player will not be at the same level of Revis they will be a difference maker at that place in the draft.

2. At Revis' age you may have him for a few more years at that top level but you could potentially have that #6 pick for the next 5-6 years at a manageable cap hit.

3. The Mariotta factor is also intriguing. With many projecting him to to fall to the sixth pick that may set up some really interesting trade opportunities, the likes of which we never see. Thats the type of haul that could set them up for the next decade.

Revis was in Florida. He could easily have that stuff from when he played with the Jets. That is a non-starter of an argument. The only potential smoking gun I see is that Manish Mehta posted what "would need to get it done" for him to return to the Jets a day before he was released which was basically what he signed for with the Jets.

The Jets repeatedly tampered with a first ballot HOF CB who was under contract to a division rival. It is the worst case of tampering the NFL has ever seen and giving the Patriots the Jets first round pick is the only appropriate sanction for it.
That's the way I see it. Even with the Jets pick it is highly unlikely we find a player as impactful as Revis so the tampering was still beneficial for the Jets. Logically speaking the Patriots had all the cards to extend Revis until the Jets expressed their desire to bring him back. Saying Woody wasn't intending to express his interest is like saying when Isis releases a terrorist video online they aren't intending to contact the president. Woody has been an owner for 15 years he has never said anything like that about anyone so I find it hard to believe it was unintentional.

It could be a calculated risk in a situation that the alternative wasn't particularly appealing from a cap perspective.
well it all depends on what contract Revis is playing here on the alternative.

Yeah, I don't get why people are setting themselves up for major disapointment. Only the Pats fans feel that there should be some major punishment to the Jets.

Well, if it's only Patriot fans that feel that the jets should be punished then I guess the jets shouldn't be punished, it would be so unfair to the jets, and we certainly don't want that.

It's a good thing everyone hates the Patriots or Goodell could never get the fan consensus necessary to punish them.

Now, on to deflategate. Should the Patriots be punished for deflategate America?

Survey says.......

ABSOLUTELY. HANG EM HIGH

There you have it folks, the people have spoken.

I absolutely think the Jets should be punished for tampering, if nothing else under the idea that they've been ignoring the league's mandates on the matter. But that's not going to increase any compensation given to the Pats. For example, if the punishment without any prior warnings given to the Jets would have been swapping 3rds, the additional punishment for spitting in the league's face isn't going to be suddenly swapping 1sts. It's going to be swapping 3rds for negatively impacting the Patriots, then additional fines and straight up loss of additional picks for ignoring the memo.

From Greg Bedard today:

The worst team in the division who was wrapping up a 4-12 season owner publicly expressed his desire to sign one of the key players on the #1 team in the conference and eventual super bowl winner. I don't think that should just be pushed under the rug that should result in serious consequences especially after that player ends up signing there despite major efforts by his existing team to extend him.

Keep in mind Revis was technically under contract until 2016 when those comments were made.

I think what the OP is asking is if the tampering charges will fall in the Patriots favor, and it results in a 1st round swap of draft picks, does the value of Revis and his contract (plus #32) worth the 6th overall pick in the draft. The reason this question might have some merit is because one has to weigh the value of Revis to compensate properly for the tampering.

To me Revis is worth more than the #6 pick, but his contract is not. If this was a 25 year old Revis, it is a no brainer. Not a 30 year old with recent knee injury. 1 injury, and the franchise is handicapped for years. Revis is not worth more than Brady (even a 37 year old Brady), for example.

We aren't getting the Jets 1st round pick. Don't even waste your time considering that as an option.

I can't imagine that Belichick would factor an unknown when determining whether or not to keep a player.

The unknown being what, if anything, the league might do about the 'tampering' with Revis.

If you're expecting anything more than a slap on the wrist you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Yeah, not gonna happen.

Would be shocked to see any draft pick at all.

I would have much rather found someone willing to take revis with a 20 million dollar cap hit, and trading him after picking up his option.

what's that revis, you don't want to extend? enjoy your year in oakland, thank you for the 3rd round pick oakland.

on a scale from 1-10 how many mushrooms did you take before making this thread?

It's Brady6, I'm sure he didn't need any at all to get there. :D

BTW, good on ya B6 for embracing it:

"I'm actually dancing in my headlights at the gas station right now..."
