McCourty to stay with Patriots!

If those contract details are true, given the lack of talent available on the market, I am okay with that for McCourty. He's the second best FS in the game, a lockerroom leader and valuable member of a very good secondary.

Now BB, I'm looking forward to hearing the breaking news of Revis' contract extension.

As an aside:

People have to relax with the financial stuff, both about the Patriots and about other teams. The cap has gone up by about $20 million dollars in two years, and it's going to keep going up. Old deals will keep getting topped.

Patriots Re-Sign S Devin McCourty; Grade and Analysis
by Charles McDonald12m ago

S Devin McCourty will sign a 5-year, $47.5M contract, source said.

Unconfirmed.

So happy! I love Devin and how much he obviously loves being here. The quotes about him being "teacher's pet" are pretty great indicators how awesome a talent we just locked up for another 5 years (hopefully)

I think closer examination of the deal is in order before we worry too much about how much was/will bent spent on DM. But, it is good to see him return.

Right, and "AAV" and such are a lot less important than the specifics. $20m of this deal could be tied into the last year, of which McCourty will realistically see basically nothing.

More money per year than I expected. But, as others have said, the details could show that some of it is backloaded or tied to roster bonuses that let the Pats out of it if there's a decline at all or they need to move on for any other reason. I'm itching to see the fine print...

Well, I guess BB considers McCourty elite if his contract is any indication.

Could have gotten more elsewhere. Still a lot, but that's awesome to see him not going for every last penny. I wouldn't have blamed him if he did.

Given that you speculated they'd lose both McCourty and Revis, while I've been saying that they'll keep both, and McCourty's already back, I'd say my "guess" is worth a hell of a lot more than your speculation.

Just my opinion, though... Others are free to disagree.
I don't remember saying they'd lose them both. Must have been a long time ago though.

Stating as fact that "Revis is staying" when it's just a guess (actually made less likely if mccourty is here due to less money) and getting ***** y when called on it is douchbaggery.

How much do you think Jason's experience in Tennessee played a role in Devin re-signing with the Patriots?

:) now Revis pls

I hope this doesnt mean the Revis negotiation went south

I hope so too. However this will not stop them from signing Revis. They can find a way to get the cash to do it.

Great point. What may seem as a "slight overpayment" today will be a steal of a deal in 2 years.

$9.5m AAV? Not sure I'd say discount kool-aid.
Need to remember this is a weak free agent safety class and an abysmal draft class so his demand would have been through the roof. The other thing is its a maximum $47.5mil so we don't know what kind of incentives/roster bonuses he has. The key is his first year cap hit will be well below the franchise tag number.

Very happy to hear this news

A lot of money, but I'm fine with them paying him like the elite safety he is. Revis is still more important though.
