Friday's NFL statement

I've been staying away from this whole nonsense but just checked in. If I read the NFL's statemet right, nobody really has a clue about anything -- EXCEPT the fact that in the 2nd half, when the Patriots crushed the Colts 28-0, the balls were extra-special-guaranteed perfect.

So we're looking for how the Patriots gained an unfair disadvantage in the first half?

Again - the most pertinent information is: how far is the drop?

It's still perfectly reasonable that the balls dropped due to nature, and that since this is the first time (that we know of) that balls were tested mid-game, the NFL didn't know how to deal with them being under-inflated. Somebody in Colts/Ravens might've known Pats go to the minimum with natural deflation in mind, and set them up to fall.

That's still a very believable course of events to me. I believe that more than I buy that Brady/BB would lie.

I think it's pretty much a given the Colts knew they were coming into this game to tattle on the Pats. Really don't put it past Irsay to have had his people over inflate their footballs knowing the refs wouldn't be gauge testing them before the game.

Colts fill theirs up to say 14.0 PSI outside and there is minimal drop but that minimal drop puts their footballs between somewhere between 13.0-13.5. Putting them in the clear.

Pats fill their balls inside to 12.5 and the difference in air temp drops the balls under 12.5 which is the under the required amount.

Irsay then runs to his drunk buddy Kravitz to put out the word and this whole **** storm happens and does nothing but snowball.

Based on this, the weather theory goes out the window. It states the balls in the second half were properly inflated and were tested after the game and remained properly inflated. If the weather were an issue, the second half balls would have experienced a decrease in PSI too.

Not if the balls inflated at halftime (whatever balls those may have been) were inflated on the sideline. The variation of inflation pressure comes with changing temperature. If I inflate my tires right now, at 34 degrees, they will measure the same on the gauge as long as they are still at 34 degrees.

Halftime is only 12 minutes. Any inflation done at halftime would have been cold inflation.

The question is - did it start in November or did it start against the Ravens? If the Patriots were under inflated in a dome, then it lends credence to the idea Brady just likes them softer - unfortunately for us. If the Ravens/Colts knew the Pats go to 12.5 and wanted to nab them in the elements, then nature remains a valid excuse.

No we're looking for any way to stop the Patriots decade-and-a-half of NFL dominance.

One more thing - given the seriousness of the investigation (CSI style), which the Patriots probably knew by yesterday (and why Brady changed his tune from dismissal as sour grapes to "serious given the intergrity of the game"), there is no way BB and Brady directly address the issue like they did if they had something to hide. Absolutely no way. They could have easily said they were only addressing the Seahawks and that the deflated football issue was a league matter. This would have been the normal Belichick response for any issue involving the league anyway which he would have instructed Brady to follow. Once again, any lawyer worth his salt would have counseled against addressing the issue at all yesterday unless they were absolutely confident that BB and Brady had nothing to hide, which I strongly believe to be the case.

The only thing that sticks out to me from this report is that the balls that were properly inflated at the beginning of the second half remained properly inflated after the game. Of course that doesn't say anything about when or where they measured the inflation of said footballs.

Was going to post the same thing. In my opinion, meaning my guess, Refs are likely not going the whole 9 yards on air pressure checking. They squeeze 'em and if it feels right, they're good to go. An interviewed Chi Bears ball boy said the refs usually squeeze them.

Let also not forget that the Patriots probably have completed their OWN investigation, which included talking to the ball boy who brought the balls to the official and likely WATCHED the official inspection. Why else would have BB and TFB exposed themsleves so much yesturday by collectively coming out and "shrugging" with those "I don't know how it happened" pressors.

They KNOW exactly what happened, and it falls on the league to now fix their own "integrity of the game" problem.

Again-

There are no "in game" rules for compliance. They're starting from a false premise, it is now impossible for them to make a correct conclusion.
This. Is it the NFL's position that footballs must remain in the range of 12.5-13.5 psi throughout the game, regardless of weather? That's a physical impossibility in most outdoor stadiums. How can that be complied with without periodic in-game examination and adjustment of the footballs? Are we now to have coach's challenges over football inflation?

At no point does this NFL statement say the balls were deflated or that the PSI dropped. Not once. This is not a mistake. They have nothing. Lawyers wrote this and this omission is not a mistake.

Well, since they don't have any data from the game in Indy I don't think we know that they were under-inflated. Since the ball attendants would be local Indy folks, not sure how what crazy conspiracy theory you would have to come up with to explain that one. Luckily, we don't have to. It's just more FUD.

Yes - I agree. I am tempted to believe the "they noticed in Indy" stuff was leaked by someone in the Indy camp and is as truthful as Jackson having noticed the ball.

Well, Rob was right. Kraft aligns with the league.

I just hope Bobby has contracted an engineering firm to subject NFL footballs and pressure gauges (accuracy as they age) to every possible environmental test. This would only cost tens of thousands at most and could have already been completed with a report written, especially paying for OT.

There are at least a thousand environmental chambers (temp & humidity) within driving distance of Foxboro. My little startup had one and we could have tested all parameters within 16 hours or so work. I've run such tests myself but on telecom equipment.

I was kind of surprised about this part of the statement-

We have concluded the Irsay is a crackhead and has sour grapes. Also, it has been determined by our investigators that we are bumbling idiots who make the keystone cops look like the manhattan project. We will continue to eat paste then make another announcement about wasting your time in a week.
