This. The fact that protection wasn't great in no way absolves Tom from blame on the SD and Indy throws.

You need to double check your data. The sack was at the end of the game, not at the end of the first half.

Sorry Oswelk but my data is correct and it is you who are incorrect(your welcome).

Hell, you could probably argue at least 10-12 wide receivers who are clearly more talented than Julian Edelman. That's just silly (no knock meant on Edelman, b/c I think he plays with a ton of heart, and that takes him very far).

If you wish to include a broader term of the word "receivers" and count TEs, then you'd definitely be much further into the late teens by the time you got to Edelman--accounting for the likes of Graham, Gates, etc.

My point is that the Patriots have one of the very best receivers in the league. His name is Rob Gronkowski.

Dagg, I have no idea where you are getting your information from, but that is the result of NE's last drive of the game.

Click here and you'll see the drive chart on ESPN, which clearly states that the missed FG was on their last possession of the game. NE actually scored a TD prior to the Nelson miscue.

Or you can click here for the PBP, which is all jumbled up at the end, but still obvious that no missed FG occurred in the second quarter.

Fair enough, Fencer, and I agree with you re: the comment above.

That said, you posed the question as to how many receivers/receiving options were better than Julian Edelman, and I answered.

I don't recall doing so.

Well, that's how I interpreted your response on the previous page (post 123) when you responded to Bob's my uncle.

Brady is the reason the team won. But Brady is basically compared to himself and Rogers. If Luck or someone else did what Brady did they'd be talking about how incredible he played.

The defense was nothing special, though they came up big situationally in the fourth. Flacco had all day, plus they were creating too many penalties. The O-line was weak, running game was non-existent. Amendola came up big, but the reason this offense was #2 in the NFL is really not because of being stacked with talent.

If you named the best receivers in the league you'd get pretty far before you got to the Patriots best receiver in Edelman. Many of the playoff teams have two receivers better than any one of the Patriots. They're deep in above average guys, but when you can only put so many guys out it doesn't much matter that your guy on the bench is better then their guy on the bench. Vereen is a role player who can't go between the tackles, Blount can go between the tackles but can't catch.

In short, minus Brady the offense is middle of the road, and without a Brady they lose that game.
If you named the best football players in the league how many of those best receivers on your list would be ranked higher than Edelman?

There would be quite a few.

CJohnson
Beckham, Jr.
Hilton
Thomas
Nelson
Julio Jones
Antonio Brown
Green
Bryant

Guys who aren't layups, but you could make a case

Tate
Sanders
Cobb
Jeffrey
Jackson
Hopkins
Andre Johnson

And some youngsters that are on the way up

Evans
Watkins
Allen

You think all of those guys are better FOOTBALL PLAYERS than Edelman? Really?

Misread, I thought you were just asking what receivers were better than Edelman.

What is the importance of the "football player" distinction?

All around value to his team in terms of contributing in different ways. I guess my point is Edelman is a more valuable player and talent than a lot of the pure receivers on your list. That's all.

My whole point was that judging the receiving corps solely by evaluating Edelman et al. is a mistake. I'm sorry I wasn't clearer in making it.

No, I remember the game. This was the end of the game, not the 1st half. Brady's sack was rough, he was looking for a TD but ended up taking the sack. Sucked.

That's a good one - Vulgar accusing someone else of having an exaggerated sense of self-importance.

i get the impression that felger is pretty self aware

he knows he is a talented provocateur/radio host

i didnt follow felger when he was a beat writer......so i dont know how good he was at that

you think he sees himself as something greater?

Brady's INT before the half was one of his worst throws in the playoffs, or his career. But I'm not buying the "cost us 10-14 points" stuff. Baltimore's D stymied our offense after the McCourty interception, why is it a given that the Patriots should given up 50 yards with ease to end the half?

Brady's INT before the half was one of his worst throws in the playoffs, or his career. But I'm not buying the "cost us 10-14 points" stuff.

After being down 14-0 and looking very flat, they had a chance to do the "double possession" pre + post halftime. That was their best shot at taking the game over once and for all.

They were driving quite nicely, and coughed up the ball at a terribly crucial time. All the momentum they had gained from coming back from the 14 pt deficit was lost on that INT.

Instead of potentially scoring 7, we allowed them to score 7. That's where the "14 pt swing" comes from.

why is it a given that the Patriots should given up 50 yards with ease to end the half?

Why did Joe Flacco have 4 touchdowns and two 14 point leads just minutes into the second half again?

The defense did not play well and allowed 31 points--although they tightened up in the 2nd half, which helped us to win the game.

They'll definitely need a better effort if they're going to make a serious run in the next game or two.
