Disappointed in this defense

To be fair to the defense, or at least to play thread devil's advocate, the defense looked pretty good through the first 3 weeks. I don't think it was as good as the people throwing out the "top 3 defense" or whatever stats made it out to be, but it was probably a top-10 defense or so.

Tonight, they gave up a ton of big plays. Mayo got blocked out of that 50 yard run by Knile Davis that turned field position from the Chiefs 10 to the Patriots 40, and the Chiefs scored a couple plays later after another big play from the least big play quarterback in the business throwing to a tight end. The drive before the half, they gave up a number of big plays too (though that drive would never have happened if Brady had just strolled across the 1st down line).

In the second half, the offense spotted them really bad field position which turned into 10 points. By that point, it was over, and then the offense gave them another 7 without the defense ever touching the field. So 7 points off a sustained drive, 10 points off big plays, 10 off turnovers with bad field position, 7 off a return, and 7 in garbage time. Tavon Wilson alone was probably good for 14 points for the Chiefs, which makes me wonder why he was playing. But, seriously, why was he playing?

It wasn't as bad as the 41 points makes it out to be. Still bad, giving up huge plays to an offense that's designed for sustained drives and eating up clock? Sure. But I don't think this defense is as bad as this thread is making it out to be.

Or, at least, I hope...

I still believe BB is a defensive genius... his gameplan agains the Rams and Bills in 91 speak for themselves.

WHat I saw tonight.. and too often in the last 9 years... it's like a totally different person was coaching our team. Amazing, really.

Its really not that surprising. Defense starts with a pass rush and ability to hold the line. I have been saying this team needs a dominant edge rusher or a couple of very good edge rushers since 2008. I was pi$$ed they passed on Michael Johnson and Dunlap in 2009-2010. Then I thought they should have traded up for Quinn. Chandler is very good but not the beast that's a one man wrecking crew. They need a couple more Chandler's. Justin Houston is young explosive and talented. HE WOULD BE A GREAT FIRST BIG FREE AGENT SPLASH!! HE and Chandler Jones would finally give them a dominant edge rush for years to come. I wanted Easley to be that dominant penetrator more than anybody else. Its been a year since ACL surgery #2. I get it, sometimes it takes longer to get to 100%. But he had shown NOTHING. No raw burst and explosion and his explosiveness is an urban legend. Even if he is 80% he should be showing something. He has One hurry in nearly 100 rushes. Sometimes players don't return to 100% after ACL injuries. Easley has had 2

Patricia is an extension of BB. He will not fire him, and even if he had to he would never hire a DC that doesn't do what he wants. For worse and for better this is what you get when you want BB as your coach.
I will be so glad when the ranting and raving and idiotic posters leave to jump on some other Team's bandwagon.

I totally agree. The live game threads are not readable. It is either utter mysery when we are losing or nitpicking everything when we are successful. A majority of the "fanbase" is spoiled by years of offensive dominance and everything but putting 40 points on an opponent is immediately met with "OMG McD suxx".

If there is any positive in the post Brady world, it is that most will jump ship to Seattle or whoever will be interesting then.

this was a bad match up for the pats a QB that does not turn the ball over and will take what the bend but don't break defense gives them and 2 good RB's vs a bad run D will they get better yes they will not give up 303 yards in the first half and 41 points but they don't play Oakland or Matt Cassel again this year so they need o fix something fast
