I see this roster being very competitive for anyone in the secondary this year. I don't dislike Chung, I just don't like revisiting old cuts. I figure we must have cut him with good reason off a secondary that wasn't nearly this competitive. I think it more likely we invest in someone younger or move someone over from CB that won't make the CB roster. Still, anything could happen.

Nitpicking, but technically we didn't cut him. He signed with the Eagles as a free agent after his rookie contract expired.

For me it's very simple.

Chung is an ideal shadow roster candidate. He'll be amongst the, thousand or so, players cut when teams trim down to 53, making his availability to be added by the Pats at a later date, a very strong possibility.

And, should that not happen for any reason, I certainly wouldn't be overly upset.

Good god, please no.

Got news for ya, its either Wilson, Harmon or Chung starting next to Dmac, and Chung played better than Harmon last night. Only way its someone else is a bad injury, or a good safety is cut by another team. I'm sure you'd be happy he is cut, but look wtf is behind him. You can say please god no, but fact is we have not many better options and several are possibly even worse. He's gonna have to really screw up to not make the team.

Who on earth do you suppose we keep over him? Wilson, Harmon and Chung are the most likely to make the 53 in the current group. If you haven't noticed our 2nd safety spot is a major weak area and we don't have anyone that is really separating themselves from him.

If another safety doesn't show more value than Chung then I'm certainly not against keeping him. If he sticks fine. If not, then fine.

Not necessarily. If we keep four safeties (not including Logan Ryan), and McCourty and Harmon are the de facto starters, both Chung and Tavon could make it as the 3rd/4th. Essentially, our backup safeties are both going to have to be special teams contributors unless we make another signing before the season starts. So the choices come down to Chung, Wilson, Ebner, and Thomas, pick your favorite two. So Chung making it wouldn't necessarily indicate anything about Wilson specifically.

I have Harmon as a relative lock (second year) and McCourty as a lock. Ebner seems pretty entrenched in his ST role with Wilson and Chung in a battle for that last spot. So, yeah, if Chung makes it then it's because he beats out Wilson.

Ebner over Wilson or Chung? Don't see it happening. Ebner is dispensable because both Wilson and Chung can play ST, as well as being better safeties imo.

I pretty much see Ebner as the second coming of Izzo and Belichick has shown in the past that he puts a premium on guys like that. Further, should injuries decimate that position, I honestly don't think Chung or Wilson is much of an upgrade over Ebner given what they have shown, to date.

That really isn't news to anyone who follows the team. And I don't particularly care one way or the other whether or not Chung makes the team or not. If he's good enough to make the cut, great, if not, fine. But if he's starting for us this year, we're going to need to seriously dial back the enthusiasm for this defense's potential.

Chung or no Chung, the 2nd safety spot isn't going to be bright spot. There isn't a single player on the roster than brings enthusiasm towards that roster spot, that's just how its gonna be.

I don't believe there to be enough evidence on record to assess this, one way or the other.

Harmon was the weakest link last night. His best play of the night was the tackle he made on Logan Ryan...;)

Is he even that good on special teams though?

I don't really see anything wrong with having a player who has been a starter in this league for a number of years being on the team as the #8 or #9 DB on the team.

Looking forward to seeing Chung/Harmon/Error Repeater playing next to McCourty.
Maybe then we'll see which of the 3 is worthy of starting at SS.
And Ebner's complete lack of playing time at SS ever since the Seattle debacle indicates to me
that if both Chung & Wilson show proficiency on STs, then Ebner's in trouble.

If we are in agreement that we do not want to see Ebner playing defense, then his value as a special teamer is diminished since Wilson and Chung can be productive in that area, but are better on D.

So if we are throwing in the towel to the idea of Ebner playing defense, then what I would like to see is Kanorris Davis getting some extended playing time during preseason at safety. If he is showing progress at the position and presumably has a higher ceiling at safety than Ebner does, then why not keep him as the team's fifth safety; we already know that Davis performs well on ST.

Of course that opens up another debate of whether to go with five safeties and five corners, or six corners and only four safeties.

deters post is obviously the other side of the coin, as he makes sense as well.

I've said many times this offseason/summer that Ebner was a very difficult projection for me, personally. I can see both Kontra and deters having solid arguments.

This guy is horrible. Hopefully he's just a camp body. I thought he was one of the worst DB's in the league last season, and I watched more Eagles games then I care to admit.
