Report: Brady to sit, Mallett to start tonight at Washington

Here's a few scenarios:
What if Mallett looks good and Jimmy struggles as we might expect over the next 2 preseason games?
Do they entertain offers or shop Mallett knowing you may not have a guy ready to be number 2?

What if they both struggle? Do they enter the market for an experienced backup and drop Mallett?

I would like to see Brady play one series or 2 but bb knows what he is doing

A few reasons stick out to me.

#1 - Brady did so well against Washington in practice they are happy where he and the WRs are currently.
#2 - They are shopping Mallet
#3 - The field is notoriously bad

and all of those reasons I think matter. However I want to look at probably the most obviously reason that has not been talked about.

#4 - Does Mallet warrant a roster spot?

The reason you carry Mallet this year is not just if is better than JG. The reason you carry him is he you believe he is a true quality back up QB. You need to honestly find out if you can go .500 with him over a 4+ game stretch.

If you can then you keep as he adds the value of keeping you in the bye hunt if Brady goes down for a large part of the season. However, if he can't do that no matter how much better he might be than JG what value does he have? If one plays better than the other but neither can keep you in the playoff hunt cause they are not good enough then why keep both?

May as well cut mallet and try to find someone else or just admit your hopes rest on Brady to not miss much time. I think this and game 4 will be the games that determine if we carry Mallet or not (assuming we can not trade him).

Could be the plan was to get Mallett extensive time with the 1's in at least one of the first two preseason games, and they wanted to make sure Brady played a little for the home crowd in week 2.

Or they're showcasing him for a trade with Houston for Andre Johnson and JJ Watt.

This the most likely scenario, Belichick has been playing possum all along and he's going to swing a last second deal for Johnson and Watt. He will likely throw Bequette in to sweeten the pot and he would be the obvious replacement for Watt. Big upgrade for the Texans.

I wasn't aware of the field being bad. Well then I wouldn't play Tom either then

Count me as one not buying the "shopping Mallett" theory. The ship has sailed on that for this season. The Patriots need a reliable backup, and anybody else would have wanted their new QB learning the offense earlier.

Surely letting Mallett establish some rhythm with the 1's and letting Brady sit out Orakpo, Kerrigan & co. on a crappy field surface is enough reason to eliminate Brady's token couple of series?

It has already been determined that Washington can't stop Brady. The one good thing the Skins have is a couple of rush DE's. Get your #2 plenty of reps with the 1's. Because that's who he'd be playing with if (the rest of this sentence has been censored). Mallet isn't going anywhere.

Jimmy G. has shown to be a rookie QB who isn't starting anytime soon.

Or what Patchick just said.

IS RGIII going to play or is it mostly going to be Cousins?

Jimmy G is not even close. Played in Division 11. The learning curve is a double jump in talent. Not saying he won't be good in a few years, but he is 2-3 years away from even knowing. Mallet needs time with the 1's. If the unthinkable happens we need to know what we have in him. If he performs well and a great offer comes our way, we take it and roll the dice. If not we keep Mallet for another year.

Obvious motivational tactic, Brady is sure to be fired up now instead of resting on his laurels.

That's ok. I'm more interested in the defensive side of the ball anyways. Looking forward to seeing Revis and Browner out there along with a healthy Wilfork and Mayo.

If Mallet is being showcased, then Mayock's pumping of his tires earlier this week may have been a solid for his former NFL Network colleague Michael Lombardi.

Sounds good to me. Brady won't expose himself.

Good news as Goodell would have suspended him for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy

On the other hand, if P. Manning were to expose himself, Jim Nantz would stand at attention (double entendre intended) while Roger Goodell conducts the US Army Marching Band playing the national anthem.
