Patriots trying to convince Wilfork to restructure

I always like seeing Miguel get cited in articles.

Most of this article reads as speculation, and pretty much the same stuff that we've been speculating here for months. I wonder if Curran has an actual source indicating that the Pats are definitely going to approach Wilfork about a restructure, or if he's just assuming it like all of us are. I'd think that if he had a source that was saying this, he would say that. Even if it is just an opinion piece, though, I agree for the most part. Although I do think that Wilfork may be a little more flexible than the article suggests, if not out of loyalty to the Pats then out of recognition that there won't be teams lining up to pay top-tier money to a 350 pound guy in his mid 30s who's recovering from a torn achilles and has a family history of diabetes.

This definitely could get ugly, but I'm pretty optimistic that it won't come to that.

I can't believe that Curran actually thinks the Pats are trying to reduce Wilfork's cap number and then not spend the money. It's not like the Pats are rolling in cap space.

A profound misunderstanding of the salary cap is basically a prerequisite for being a Boston sportswriter. And that's if you're giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that it's not deliberate.

As a vet who's been posting here since '01, it's definitely cool to see him get the recognition.

If it does he'll get cut. That would suck. If anyone can bounce back and have an impact, it's him. Can't measure heart.

Watch Quick Slants it highlights the credibility and intelligence of Curran. Bedard was the best reporter we had in our local media with him gone it is a bunch of clowns and Curran is King Clown.

If the Patriots want to shuffle Wilfork’s money just to open 2014 cap space and then contract Wilfork at below-market prices in coming years WITHOUT using the cap space saved on new guys in 2014, then...

However, if the Patriots intend to use that money a Wilfork restructure will save them THIS YEAR, that’s a different story.

I think it's time to move on. Use the money to sign Bennett and Browner, go DT in the draft.

I suspect that the best result for everyone might be to cut Wilfork, let him recuperate some, and then market himself. Wilfork should find that he is more valuable to the patriots than to anyone else.

I would not think that Wilfork would sign any deal that would get him less than $8M guaranteed (the current contractual amount). It is not at all clear that the patriots would or should pay that amount unless Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4 are below marker, as Curran suggests.

I think the title needs to be more accurate:

"Patriots trying to convince Bianca to permit Vince to restructure.

heh....none of my business but yeah...if I had to guess...I'd say you are 100% correct...

So it appears the only options are asking him for a pay cut, or extending him, since he's in the final year of the five year pact. That seems to be going over some heads when they talk about "restructuring," I think.

I'm actually good with either one, as I wouldn't bet against Vince coming back and being a very good player still. Bianca seems like a damn tough negotiator though.

Have heard props for Miguel from several sources, last season remember Dale Arnold singing his praises on his Sunday Morning football show...

He deserves all the praise he gets...

Is Vince running yet ?
Until the Pats can see him in action why would they do anything other than cut him ?

Agreed, but I'd be more concerned with the inability to measure Vince's waistline.

He wont do it and then he is going to end up getting cut. Its going to suck so hard

What team would pay Vince elite money?
Who needs a nose tackle of Vinces Calibur?
Well first you have to look at what defenses he fits the strength of.
Saints, Falcons, Chargers, Texans are the only teams I can see in that mix. Steelers would but they can not afford him.
Any chance he could be traded?
Also if he does get released do you think we will target another tackle? Or go into the season with Kelly and the pups?

I would be shocked if a team paid Vince more than 4 million on the open market.

NO team is going to pay Vince Wilfork 12million$ even if he does get cut and goes to FA. This is one thing I agree with Felger & mazz on. he has no leverage...if he had a pro-bowl season and stayed healthy then we might have a dilemma on our hands.

but he has been out with an achilles injury and there is no telling how he is going to look. Not to mention this is a passing league now and no team is going to dish out 12million for a run stuffing NT

Wilfork really has no choice.

Agreed, but I'd be more concerned with the inability to measure Vince's waistline.

It's not like he's ever been svelte. If he looks like he does in the photo in this interview that was taken 2 days after surgery, then he's right where he should be.

The real test, as FortressX pointed out, is can he run and move well.

His hearts just fine from what I saw, though.
