Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

Our perceived position of strength 4-6 weeks ago has now been decimated. I am not understanding these moves at safety.

Very surprised that Meriweather could not warrant at least a mid-to-late rd pick...

Fixed your post.

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

What are the chances that he does not end up a Jet? 3%?

Crap, you're right!

Rats are first in line to claim cuts aren't they?

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather(was cut by Patriots)

We didn't know what we had in Rodney at the time - though Belichick apparently had a good idea.

As far as the fans knew at the time Rodney was signed, it was simply the Patriots picking up a guy cut outright by the Chargers to add some quality depth.

The similarity of the situations is more important than the differences. In both cases Belichick keeps the players he feels gives the team the best chance to win.

When he cut Milloy to the shock of every Patriots fan, that resulted in another Super Bowl ring.

So they automatically win another ring by cutting Meriweather? Nice logic.

By the way, the Pats had a VERY GOOD idea what they were getting with Harrison. He was an acclaimed head hunter and damn fine player that BB coveted long before he actually signed him. The assertion that he was an "unknown" is absurd.

That answer would seem to be obvious, so I'll just leave it at that.

Just goes to show you what the rest of the NFL thinks of this Pro Bowl Safety. Nobody wanted him bad enough to step up with compensation before he hit the waiver wire.

Given that Bedard was reporting that he'd talked with more than half the league, who hadn't heard from the Patriots, it wouldn't seem to show that at all.

I've expected him to be traded for a long time. Never thought he would get CUT though, we really couldn't get ANYTHING for him? Suprising, I thought at the very least we'd keep him around for depth if we couldn't find a suitor.

In 2003 we cut Lawyer Milloy 5 days before our
1st game against the Drew Bledsoe Bills

Milloy signed with Buffalo who blew us out
In the opener.

The know it all media said that Belichick
Made a big mistake cutting

They ripped Belichick for weeks

How did that season turn out????

Who's this year's Eugene Wilson (supercharged, because Chung is no Harrison)?

Also, he move Seymour, and that was a huge bust in terms of finding a replacement and helping the team that year. Looking back to Milloy really doesn't apply here, at least as far as making a foolproof rebuttal.

Bedard tweeted that he is hearing that the Pats are still looking to trade Meriweather, Tate and Butler. If they can't find trading partners then Meriweather and Tate will be released. I'm not sure about Butler.

OK, something doesn't add up: you have a two-time Pro Bowler (which means that *some* people in the AFC think somewhat highly of him) making a reasonable salary, who you should at least be able to get something for—even if it's just a 2012 7. Why just release him?

That (trading BM) makes a bit more sense, although they'd still be wafer thin at safety.

Looks like Molden is in.

Per shalisemyoung tweet.

hearing recently acquired DB Antwaun Molden is safe...BB complimentary of him after Giants game

I guess they really just wanted to move away from the group they had. In BB I trust.

Neither does comparing Seymour and Meriweather, completely different class of players.

I'm still looking for answers why they just let Jarrod Page walk. I thought with the time that he had gotten, he was pretty decent.

Chung may not be Rodney, but then again the
Big Bang Clock was never Lawyer Milloy

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

Get ready for a season filled with depth problems at safety. No way around it if he's gone. Not saying he's all world, but at some point you need actual warm bodies out there.

I love how Pat "fans" figure BB is a doddering old fool that makes moves with barely a thought to the implications.

Either he likes Brown and/or Barret, or he's going to pick the wires for someone, or make a deal.

Howe wrote this afternoon: "The Patriots apparently tried to trade him but couldn't find any suitors. In February, sources indicated Meriweather could be worth as much as a third-round draft pick on the trade market, but his value was destroyed Saturday when word leaked the Pats were willing to release him.

Meriweather, who was on the books for $1.65 million in the last year of his rookie contract, earned trips to each of the last two Pro Bowls -- a deserving selection in 2009 and a questionable one in 2010 -- and never missed a game during his four seasons in New England, but the 2007 first-round pick became unpredictable on the field over the last year.

He has always been a shaky tackler, but his coverage skills waned in 2010, when he took poor angles to the ball and was victimized by big plays. He also lost his starting job early in the year when he said he wasn't practicing up to the standard of the coaching staff.

Meriweather's 2011 camp got off to a poor start, as his flaws in coverage were on regular display. He was also reamed out by safeties coach Matt Patricia on one occasion for having a poor showing during a positional drill."

I'm sure BB has a lot more insight and opinions on Meri then Howe, or us here. If he thought he was worthy for the money (and wasn't going to screw up on and off the field), he'd still be here. He is not.

"Let him walk" seems a bit strong given that he was a free agent and signed a pretty good contract -- and who knows whether he even wanted to stay.

I thought he signed a one year minimum contract?

This is where I show up and LOL at everyone who said I was stupid for saying Meriweather was a terrible player.

I am really starting to worry about this backfield.:(Who is out there?
