Schefter: Branch to New England for 4th round pick

Branch will make our offense less predictable I bet.
Did'nt he used to do some return work as well?
I know I don't like seeing Welker fielding punts.

That's a whole ****load of assumptions. Who the hell knows how different the ENTIRE 06 season is with Branch. And of course you don't have Meriweather today, you don't get 07 (Branch would have been making about the sum total of Moss, Welker and Stallworth's salary in 2007).

2006 with Branch is STILL less likely to win the superbowl than 2007 with moss welker and stallworth.

With Branch we win the 2006 Super Bowl. I'm pretty sure we would have. Reche Caldwell was our best receiver!!

If we don't win in 2007 because of no Moss, then... um... what? We didn't win in 2007.

This thread is huge and I can't find the post, just too damn lazy I guess. Someone said we traded Maroney for Branch. If you look at it that way, it's not a good deal, its a GREAT DEAL.

Again, I was was answering another poster's strawman argument of who would you rather have, Branch or Ornberger- 2009 4th round draft pick.

Pats fans are amazing. Folks, we consider it a win when a draft pick contributes ANYTHING. If we had a fourth-round pick catch 40 balls this year, we'd all be happy. Branch is a known quantity who played on the outside -- our vacated position -- on championship teams. No one can possibly argue that it isn't better this year to have Branch. We are, after all, still alive in a championship hunt this year, emphasizing the "this year" part.

This team played well with Branch. Brady likes him. He was a fun player to watch and root for. And yet everyone is whining about losing a fourth-rounder. Pitino was right, the negativity in this town sucks.

If nothing else, the Patriots "rented" Moss for 3 seasons and his value increased. They "rented" out Branch for a few seasons and his value plummeted :lol2:

It's a pretty stupid trade but as Kontradiction said, they will get that pick back when they trade down with one of their picks in the upcoming draft.

"At the least, Branch is worth a sixth round pick. At the most, a fifth round pick. If Seattle is asking for more than a fifth, then New England needs to decline".

the lack of veteran experience clearly was a concern for BB...good to have a vet come in who has had success in this system..i think that is worth a 4th round pick, particularly when you consider the pile of picks this team has amassed....i like the trade

Do you even read what you're responding to?

Awesome. Welcome home, Deion!

Can't believe people are saying a 4th is too high. Teams give up 4ths just to move up a few spots in the 3rd. If Branch provides anything at all then it's a good use of a 4th.

By the way, something important that I don't think has been talked about enough...that this is a sign that BB thinks this team has a chance to make a run in the playoffs.

One thing I was worried about with Moss going to the Vikes is that he might have been giving up on the season. Who knows if this trade will work--it's hard to argue that this team is better with Branch than Moss (at least a motivated Moss). At least, BB feels like it's worth giving up some future value in the hope of getting this team over the hump.

That might be the most encouraging part about this move.

Some of you seem have really different ways of thinking, I just can't understand. Adding Branch changes EVERY SINGLE THING about 2006, you can't just assume "Oh we're better with Branch and we -almost- made it to the SB without him, therefore we win with him".

The 2007 team is better than the 2001 team, it's better than the 2006 team even with Branch, but a SB is never guaranteed.

If this is true....it is another waste of a pick...

Yeah, good point, we have agreat track record with 4th round picks. Out of the last 10 years full of 4th rounders we have hit maybe twice!!!

Take your pick! :D

So Laurence Maroney for Deion Branch? Not bad I guess. 4th kinda high. Welcome back Deion!

We effectively traded Maroney for Branch.

Im heard a lot of the same things about this guy...Not saying his production will be equal but it was a 4th round pick. We got a 4th for Maroney IIRC.

Branch for Maroney! I think so!

The key with Branch is whether he can play outside. He is redundant with Welker, Edelman, and even Hernandez as a slot-only guy. If he can play outside-like he did in 03-05-then this works.

And stop whining about the compensation. We got a 4th rounder for Maroney. We traded a 4th rounder for Branch. So basically, we traded Maroney for Branch and maybe even moved up a few spots in the 4th round if we kept Denver's 4th and gave Seattle our 4th.

If someone asked you in Week 1 if you would do that trade, would you? I think so.

We get him back for Maroney. Good deal.

I can't forget the way he forced his way out of town, acting similar to the way Mankins is acting prior to the start of the season. Though, I am happy with the way it all turned out...

- Branch fetched the Patriots a first round pick (Seattle overpayed).

- Patriots turned around and traded for Randy Moss, who only helped them destroy the league in 2007.

- Branch comes back with a fourth, which is what we gave away Maroney for and the Hawks are paying a chunk of the contract.

Branch needs to eat some humble pie and make himself an asset to this team; a team that hasn't shown they have needed him since he left.

With that said...

Glad to have him back and look forward to seeing the fans breaking out their Branch jersey's on Sunday.

PS, remember the debates of whether he could be considered a 1000 yard receiver, despite him never having a 1000 yards in a season?

We're likely to have 3 of the top 35 picks and 6 of the top 100, we can lose a 4th in what is basically Maroney for Branch. I like this trade, nothing to lose really and some upside.

Would you be convinced that Maroney for Branch was a good trade?

Because that is what happened.

I take a shower, get changed and go to work and all hell breaks loose. So Shefter reports the trade of Branch for Maroney, I mean the 4th round pick. I imagine that has already been said. I also imagine someone asked about contract/salary$$$?

Umteen pages in an hour it took to shower and drive to work...It would take longer to read than its worth at this point.

If his legs are healthy and he is now considered healed and durable enough, he will be a good fit.

He has never and will never give up on a season. He always feels they can win each game they play.

I am sure a few of us said that. And its accurate. We get the 4th for Maroney and use it to get Branch. Hence it was almost a three team trade in which we traded Maroney for Branch, pretty much straight up. No brainer.

I feel as good about this O as I have since around week 11 of 2007 when the spread was exposed to inside blitzes and the weather turned Moss' hands to stone.

salary better be eaten by the hawks:mad:

Why? Not your money. Unless you're secretly Robert Kraft.

I love the move. Tate at flanker, Branch at split-end, and Welker in the slot. I like our team.

The way I look at it... Do you guys really think Belichick would trade his beloved 4th round pick for deion branch?

In Bill I trust

Seattle had nothing to gain in cutting him since he's a vested veteran and they were on the hook for his entire 2010 salary whether the played or not. Now the balance of that salary is paid by NE. He is also under our control for another season if we choose to keep him. He is the only WR we could have acquired who can play in this system this week. There is no guarantee any other WR we acquired could ever play in this system, including one we draft.

I understand that. Branch holds more value to New England than Seattle at this point in his career. And he's younger than Moss. But Moss' more durable.

Still, I wouldn't take the value of Denver's fourth round pick for granted. They could finish this season 7-9 or 8-8.

9/12/2006: Signed a six-year, $39 million contract. The deal includes $13 million guaranteed. 2010: $5.47 million, 2011: $5.95 million, 2012: Free Agent

Deion Branch

I'd have to disagree.
A guy who pretty much knows the system, who works well with Brady, who has plwnty of experience, 4 weeks into the season, is weel worth a 4th.
Teams throw 4th's around all the time, no big deal. It won't make or break our draft.

Well said. I too hated what Branch did, but I think is about as good as we can do and I think he will fit right back into this offense. People forget how money Brady to Branch was in big spots, welcome back, now get to work!
