Pats trade for Jarrad Page, S, KC

If he was Meriweather nimble + Rodney mean, I doubt he would be available for a conditional pick.

So, have you put in your application for director of pro personnel with the Pats, cause they can use your acumen immediately.

Scout Inc's take on the guy:

Page is a big, powerful safety who has been a starter for the past three years in Kansas City after serving as a backup during his rookie season. He missed more than half of the 2009 season with a calf injury. He has above-average straight-line speed and good range over the top in zone coverage. He builds to speed rather than being explosive or instant. He has adequate route recognition from deep zones and can read the quarterback's eyes to get a jump on the ball but does not close with a big burst of acceleration. He does show good ball skills when he can get into position to make a play on the ball but is not a great leaper when contesting for the ball. He is quick to key and diagnose and takes good angles to the ball. He is not timid when it comes to inserting himself in run support.

They give him a grade of 67 which is the top end of being an average starter. Now we have five safeties with starting experience.

Reiss mentioned in his last chat that he wouldn't be surprised if McGowan went to IR, which would explain this.

Makes a lot of sense if this is indeed the case.

Despite his size and occasional big hit, Page is a poor tackler and isn't great in run support. He's not a guy you want in the box all that much. He's done a pretty good job of covering TEs like Gates though.

The best thing McGowan did was cover TE, Page can cover TE and I think he is a little bit better in pass coverage than McGowan who often killed us with mental mistakes. I really like the pick up and with McGowan out for the year it makes alot of sense.

Solid pickup by the Pats. He should be a good replacement for McGowan with his ability to cover tight ends. He could start if Chung doesn't work out.

PFT noted that McGowan is going on IR - now this deal makes even more sense

Page says he is "extremely excited to be a Patriot."

I'm excited about this move. A safety who can cover TEs and although not a great athlete he gets the job done by being physical and football smart. He's a combo of Sanders and McGowan. He also plays STs, I remember him blocking a punt as a rookie and scoring, vs GB I think. I like the move, once he picks up D certainly an upgrade over McGowan.

This is a low risk- high reward move by the Patriots.

Page is young and has been on nothing but losing teams in the NFL. Edwards wasn't exactly known for his development of players.. Whether BB and Brown can undo the damage remains to be seen, but I think they can.

Page is smart, he plays with a fiery attitude, is good to very good on special teams, and can cover a TE if the Pats go to the "BIG NICKEL".

Now, for a guy who spent 4 years playing SS for UCLA, I find it kind of intriguing that some people say he can't play in the box. Only time will tell. However, he will only be the 4th S on the Pats so it remains to be seen how much we'll actually see of him.

Zero risk. The pick is conditional.
Probably (given the cut day timing) but not absolutely certain.

"Conditional pick" often means if we cut him we owe the Chiefs nothing, but could also mean something like "7th rounder which upgrades to 6th if he makes the team". The conditions attached to conditional picks often aren't known until later.

Belichick sometimes "overpays" in draft picks if he decides he wants to get a deal done, so who knows?

If he turns out to be a 6th or 7th, that is still a low risk pick!

BB will no doubt get a few 6th and 7th pick from doing his usual on draft day :)

A 6th and 7th for this guy is well worth it. BB had big plans for McGowan this year hopefully Page can learn quick. BB just has the worst luck with these big safeties huh?

Just out of curiosity, why do you think BB had big plans for McGowan this year?

I'm wondering the same thing, in general. He scored some big points early with some big hits and stopping some TEs (Gonzalez, especially). But his playing time diminished and I got the impression he was part of the DB breakdowns against the big-game QBs; didn't his playing time diminish significantly? I think there was obviously a plan for him this year (thus Page) but I'm not sure how big.
