Artificial crowd noise at Indy? (MERGED)

Re: More Polian shenanigans -- artificial crowd noise?

I think we can savor the win while noting that the game was apparently officiated by Stevie Wonder and questioning the peculiar audio issues. If there's nothing to the latter, then fine. But the former needs to be addressed. Winning the game does not excuse the fact that the officiating sucked. I don't think it was a conspiracy by any stretch, just poor performance. But it's not like sucking is all that much more excusable.

A blind ref would not have only hit the Patriots, this was a dirty ref. I just read the Phil B blog at Indy star http://blogs.indystar.com/philb/ below are a couple of quotes from him

“The Patriots didn't benefit from at least a couple questionable calls, not to mention a couple more that could have gone their way.”

“8:36 - Refs called Randy Moss for pushing off on a jump ball. Sure the Patriots fans will have a field day with this, and rightfully so. Hate to say it, but looking at the replay, this was another bad call. Moss has pushed off a lot in his career, but this wasn't one of those times. If anything, he just kept Tim Jennings behind him with like a basketball move, like you would do when rebounding. That's at least two bad calls that favored the Colts. I'm not including what could have been defensive holding on Gary Brackett, who had an arm around Faulk. “

Re: About the crowd noise...

Anyone of the rule forbidding the use of mimicking crowd noise. If in fact this technique was used, how can the commissioner not dock Indy a draft choice if its illegal.

Re: More Polian shenanigans -- artificial crowd noise?

I read this, and I'm thinking these are reports from folks who actually attended the game. Then it becomes apparent you guys are basing this all on audio piped to your TV's?? Poorest thread started by a moderator ever. You should be embarrassed.

At least the title of the thread was changed back to its original. For a while it also read "Audio Proof Included", that was changed back after the radio footage didn't have the "Proof" on it.

I used to try and argue the noise, but after a while, it gives me a quiet satisfaction knowing that 56,000 Hoosiers can make enough noise in our tiny hick dome that it has spawned conspiracy theorists.

I haven't been to Gillette, much like most of the Patriots fans haven't been to the Dome, but I've heard that the noise situation there is the opposite. It's probably due to the size and openness of the stadium, but I've also heard that the crowd is contaminated with loads of "wine and cheese" football fans, rich Bostonians that go as much to be seen as to see the game. Maybe all the fancy noise canceling headphones that they bring to help them enjoy their Brie has something to do with the relative quietness too.

It will be harder next year with the new stadium to make so much noise, but hopefully with more seats, I'll finally be able to get my season tickets and do my best to help perpetuate the myth!

Re: Crowdnoisegate

Guess we better start running up the score on teams we're way better than to prove we're manly. Also, still have not seen that from something outside of cbs. You lose!!! Good day sir!!

This is really interesting! If you have a recording of the game, go
to 3:58 in the 4th qtr. They are just coming out of a commercial
break and the Pats have the ball. Listen closely and you will hear
the crowd mics being switched on. There is an abrupt increase
in the crowd noise. I can't believe how obvious it is! The mics
were not fed into the system slowly with faders. The faders were
already up and the channels were off. The engineer just switches the
channels on and the volume increase is instantaneous!

You can sense the quality of the audio change. I'll bet dollars to donuts that this happened in the stadium and not in the broadcast booth. Comparing this "instant on" anamoly with the audio of other games not at the RCA would help confirm this. Broadcast engineers are pros. They fade audio in and out using faders so as not to create obvious abrupt changes. I also see no reason why the broadcast engineer would artificially increase the crowd volume anyway. It would taint the broadcast of the game.

Re: Crowdnoisegate

There is a simple answer to this assertion. If it was as is most likely a digital audio artifact (like the pixelization us HD viewers get on video) then nobody at the game heard it. So, folks at the game, what did you hear? Is there an NFL films recording of the 1st play of the 4th QTR?

Does it really matter?

Re: Crowdnoisegate

I'm sure nothing will come of it, St Dungy can do no wrong...

And now, the AFCCG 2008, featuring Bill Belicheat and the Patriots versus the Milli Vanilliapolis Colts! Let's get it on for the inaugural American Football Conference's Cheater's Game!!!

Thanks for all the insight Frezo.

Based on the articles I've read, clearly Kraft heard it live.

Gillette's acoustics suck. It's hard to overcome the expanse and the open endzone. I'd like to see Kraft pump up the volume to make it a bit louder but he'd never do it. The "Red Seaters" are an easy target but they're hardly the reason it's not as loud as desired.

Re: Crowdnoisegate

Hmm...I wonder if we'll ever hear anything about this? Something tells me we won't hear anything because it is the saintly Colts afterall. Too bad.

I reserve comment unless someone who was at the game can assert to it. There can be so glitches in the regular TV transmission. Not sure if I could by what I heard on TV.

BTW, this 2006 article from the New York Times ought to worry the Colts a bit:

The N.F.L. found no evidence to support that, although Commissioner Paul Tagliabue recently issued a memo saying teams could lose draft picks if they enhance stadium noise.

Funny, I seem to remember something about some coach making disparaging comments about the whole camera incident. . . . :D

He SURE DID. Which certainly explains how the NFL so quickly picked up an inquiry into this. Kraft was pissed from the sound of the article.

Half of me thinks it's probably BS, but then again, the other half says there must be something to this and the NFL has asked CBS to not comment until they've looked into it further.

The longer we go without comment from them, the more legit it looks. It's too easy for them to realize that it was their error and put out a simple "whoops, we effed up the sound, our bad" notice that would make this ALL GO AWAY.

That plus the fact that Kraft heard it. Brady alluded to it as well, without the accusing tone (which he wisely left out). This might grow legs

Re: Crowdnoisegate

Does it really matter?

yeah....

You don't think so? I am tired of other teams players/coaches trying to act saintly and it would be good to know the "cheating" that others resort to.

I don’t know if this was the case why was not the announcers voice screwed up to? It should be looked into, because it would be a "sad day in the NFL" if St. Dungy was exposed as a hypocrite.

Re: Crowdnoisegate

nothing will happen on this. If it had to the news networks wouldve talked about this last nite.
It took them 2 mins after the game to talk about BB's class and handshake and 24 hrs later they havent mentioned bad refs and crowd noise. i wont hold my breath on it being mentioned.
