I'm not old enough to relate but like it anyway. Over-moderation and fascist policies suck. Deal with the individuals who go too far rather than punish everyone.

Amen Brother. Nothing upsets me more than people talking in generalizations. Unless of course we are talking about the Eagles or Raiders. (I know a few nice Ravens fans)

Jealousy is a disease, and the entire country is sick. They are all just mad we have some very good sports teams to root for at the moment. I mean honestly , the redskins and the nationals?

Oh please they are just sour.

The nice thing about all the hatred flung our way is that no matter how angry, frustrated and jealous opposing fans get, the Patriots will continue to win games...many games. And the more we win, the angrier they'll get and as they get angrier and angrier...WE'LL JUST KEEP WINNING:eek:

Personally, I find that DEEPLY satisfying! :D

It is kinda like when you accidentally cut somebody off in traffic and they pull up next to you at a light and scream and yell at you. The more polite you are, the more pissed off they get.

Good point. Perhaps that is WHY Extremeskins.com has the two week waiting period. To avoid the "unpleasantness" of opposing viewpoints.

We don't feel that way here. Rude or not, there is a free exchange of ideas here. Obviously the folks who are used to 100% backpatting at Extremeskins are not used to it. It's understandable.

See shmessy, this is what I mean when I say NFL fan sites are not for "lively football banter over tea & crumpets". If our board only had patriots fans talking about how "excellent our team is, etc.", it would make me puke.

You gotta have some "clash & bash"...otherwise we may as well join the 4-H club!;)

I mean... when you are right you are right. Unfortunately there are alot of people in the NFL world who only hear/ see what they choose. Which is why i am studying to be a Lawyer.... I really enjoy listening to people and taking their opinions into consideration.

I absolutely love the whole idea of fansites and forums. It gives people the chance to talk with fans of the team, as well as fans from different states/ teams, who otherwise you would never know to exist.

No surprise someone from the DC area breaks out the road-rage analogy.

Amen, it's all good.

I'm from Boston and now I live in Maryland/DC.

I wouldn't use that comparison.

As many of you know, I'm a long time New England sports fan, but have lived in VA for sometime. I have been to many Redskin games, and have alot of friends and coworkers who are die hard Redskin fans.

As far as this part of the country vs. New England, and the politeness/manners related to the residents. It's quite honestly not even close. I'm the first one to say "don't generalize", but down here people tend to be so rude, and in a hurry, and don't have the manners that I was use to growing up.

My wife and I were in Maine and Mass. over the summer, and more people smiled and waved towards us in traffic, and also while we were crossing the street in four days, than the last 4 years here in the DC area. It was so noticable. All my friends from here that I brought up there over the last 20 years have all commented to me about "how nice everybody is up there". It comes across big time. We admit down here that there is so much rudeness, it's kinda sad. Try and let somebody merge in front of you in traffic, and expect a "thank you". It doesn't happen. It's maddening.

As for sports knowledge, again it's not even close. The sports radio station down here is near last in the ratings. Back in Boston, heck, the top 3 or 4 rated radio stations are all "Sports Talk". Edge on the knowledge level goes heavily to New England.

What about Redskin vs. Patriots fans. Patriot fans at Gillette, or in the sports bars seem pretty open minded and humble, but on these boards some can be "over the top", and rude to those that visit. Redskin fans can be brutal, and don't have a good reputation around here from opposing team fans. I hear all the time "I don't mind Joe Gibbs and the Redskins, but I can't stand their fans". That's pretty common.

By comparison, after a loss, the Patriots fans tend to get angry, while Skins fans get very depressed. The post game call in shows make you want to jump off a bridge.

As far as talking smack after the home team wins. Skins fans are FAR less classy and humble. Far less. Patriot and Red Sox fans tend to have alot more "hey, you guys played great, we're fortunate to win". On these boards though there seems to be alot less of that.

One thing I definitely have noticed is that New England sports fans are far quicker to say "Hmmm, I think we'll be 11 and 5 this year, here's why, and here are the games we'll lose". While every year the Redskin fans predict great things, and then end up with a losing record. There seems to be more "blinders on" with Skins fans, and less honest assessment. Just one man's opinion.

Anecdote: One female friend Redskins fan went with us to a preseason Patriots - Skins game years ago. She ripped the Pats, and spoke about how great the Skins were. Then, in 2001, the Pats win it all, and the best she could say was "Come back to me when you've won more than one like the Redskins". Three Super Bowls later, she still insists that her Skins are better than the Patriots, regardless of the situation.

Please know, there are some great Redskins' fans, who are very nice. I'm just giving an open and honest comparison of the norm. That anecdote admittedly is the extreme.

Agreed.

What's sad is that they're also the best place to get information. You can go to places like ESPN.com, SI.com, or local papers to get a lot of cliches, talking points, and hyperbole thrown at you or you can go to a message board to get all of that plus real information.

Mainstream media will tell you that NE throws the ball deep and is solid on defense. At a Pats message board you can find out that where NE kills you is passes between 5-15 yards, and with RAC on those short throws. NE fans can tell you that on third down Kevin Faulk will catch a 3-5 yard pass in the middle of the field and run for the first. NE fans will tell you that you want nothing to do with the NE DL, and that you're much better off attacking the secondary. NE fans will tell you that quick RBs and speedy recievers who can run after the catch are the biggest threats against the NE defense.

Maybe I just have too much time on my hands, but opposing team message boards really interest me.

I have to respectfully disagree, but I'm in Maryland - -not Virginia, so perhaps it's different!

The Redskins fans come off to me as remarkably loyal and generous to their team (not so much mean to others). That is what makes me so pissed that Daniel Snyder has screwed these folks and taken their money along the way to padding his net worth.

I never advocated taking Brady out with a cheap shot.

As with any message board, you're going to have some idiots. We seem to have too many of them on ES.

No prob. No need for you to apologize for others.

I just recenlty moved back north after living in Fairfax, VA for two years. Road rage was awful down there. Granted I've never lived in Boston and know nothing about that, but I don't think it's safe to assume that every NE fan is from Boston (a lot of us are from VT, NH, ME, western MA, RI, and CT).

Within a week of moving to Fairfax we read about a road rage incident where someone shot another driver. A friend of ours carried a table leg in his van and had to use it to scare the other guy into backing down and getting back in his car. Maybe I've been sheltered in Keene NH and Albany NY but I've never dealt with so much craziness while driving.

I'll be happy if I never drive in the DC area ever again.

*edit* as for the other DC area stuff, the sports talk radio was pathetically uninformed. The callers were beyond useless. The people were a heck of a lot nicer than northerners though, and we struggled to adjust back to the north. We still regularly comment on just how crappy the service is up here compared to Virginia.

I think we're in violent agreement on the loyalty thing. They are VERY loyal. They are VERY generous to their team. And, granted they haven't had alot to crow about recently. But, when they were winning, I was already here, and man you did NOT want to be a fan of one of the losing teams. Not as obnoxious as Philly or BMore fans, to be sure, but I was comparing them to New England fans. Appreciate your point of view.

I wonder what it's like to be a Redskins fan when we're winning.

I wouldn't really know. 2005/2006 was so long ago...

I got here in 1987, so I saw the last five years or so of the great Gibbs I edition. It seemed like one big fun party to my hazy recollection. I LOVED listening to Riggo and The Greaseman on WWDC in the mornings - - comedy gold!

I don't recall any real sourness or meanness back then, but don't forget, those were pretty bleak Patriot days so the Redskins fans really didn't have much attention for the ol' Pat Patriot logo.
