Marcus Cannon extension

Will be interesting to watch him against Denver in a few weeks. I'm sure it will be just as loud as the playoff game last year. If he shows improvement against that pass rush, it bodes well for the postseason.

Cannon played well in Denver last year in the regular season game, when the snap count wasn't getting tipped.

To me, this just proves how the Patriots build talent, rather than buy talent. Cannon struggled a bit for years. But BB (or Scar) see's that chunk of coal and presses it into diamonds. I was ready to give up on him. But he came back in great physical shape this season. You gotta love these guys that buy into the system and work hard. I'm really happy for the guy.... and us

PS, screw Collins.;)

Good points he played so well under Scar I hope the Patriots brass have some OL Protege under Scar.

Yep, I think we've all had our fill of...

$32.5m is #4 at RT in total value.

$14.5m guaranteed is #3 for RT.

Marcus Cannon is being paid as a Top 5 RT in all of football.

Hes playing very well but Top 3 or 4??

Seems like an overpay but if TB12's uni stays clean then so be it.

Right Tackle Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap
He's probably in the top 5 who are off their rookie contracts. Conklin, for example, has been a top 5 RT but he won't be paid like it until 2019 at the earliest.

He's a great story. Happy for the guy. I still can't get out of my head the nightmare AFCCG he had last year, but he deserves to be looked at for what he has become, not what he was.

Regards,
Chris

I think it's interesting hearing all this talk concerning Solder in this thread. Very reminiscent of Matt Light threads circa 2008-09 and him getting to 30

He's definitely playing better than the top guy on that list.

In doing a little more homework, it looks like the draft and FA market is going to be slim pickings for RTs.

I.E.- Someone was going to pay him that.

Yes let's base this deal on how he plays the next couple of weeks. BRILLIANT and don't sit there and say you weren't saying that. because the first time Cannon allows Brady to get hit you chicken little, doom-and-gloomers will be on here saying Cannon getting extended was stupid.

Where did i say that? Get a grip! I am saying he will see some talented pass rushers coming up.

Our RB's and TE's are going to have to do some extra chipping off the Edge starting this week that should help our Tackles especially Solder.

Rams, Ravens, and donkeys. Nice challenge for our OL

Interesting
Keeping Solder obviously wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen, would just hope they wouldn't make that decision now given there's still another year on his contract and they could evaluate during next season.

The reality is Brady will be 40 years old next year, and there's more importance than ever on keeping him upright. We've already seen him get roughed up this year and dealing with a gimpy knee. Would guess Bill and co. would be willing to put a premium on ensuring Brady stays as healthy as possible, and work around the cap to do so.

Assuming this site is accurate, Solder is currently #11 in average tackle salary. Less than 2 mil separates him from being in the top 5, and a little over 3 million seperates him from the highest paid.

Interesting that Solder makes 2.5 million more than Joe Staley of the Niners who has been to several Pro Bowls. I will always remember the draft swap where we used the 2008 SF pick to select Jerod Mayo and got a fourth round selection in 2007 which was later traded to Oakland for Randy Moss. The Niners used the 2007 Pats pick on Staley. The trade was a win/win for both teams.

In retrospect, the 2011 draft for the Pats was one of the better ones. They got 4 starters out of it in Solder, Vereen, Ridley, and Cannon. None have been stars, but all provided reasonable production while here. They also got Mallet (no comment) and whiffed on Dowling so it's not all roses, but it's certainly not a bad draft in hindsight. They also traded a 1st rounder in that draft, and that compensation was part of the package to draft Chandler Jones in 2012. So not too bad; not the duds like 2006 and 2007.

In a couple weeks we'll see if he can hold Von Miller at bay reasonably well. Then the champagne pops.

Patriots Comeback Player of the Year.

Can Scar coach the whole 5 years too? :p

Big improvement in his technique this year. His feet play looser and faster and his hands stay in and up a lot more.

He actually had played well at RT whenever he has been healthy.
Playing OT with a foot injury is not a good basis for judging a player.

Totally agree and I still remember the discussion in the OL thread after we got rid of coach Googs where multiple users where pointing this out repeatedly and also reminding people that Cannon was one of Scar's personal projects.

Cannon's career revival (and also Chung to some extent) just goes to show that having the right coaching for the right players makes all the difference in a sport of inches.

Solder will be 29 next year, and he's not going to be worth another big money deal when he turns 30. If he'll play financial "ball" with the Patriots, he'll probably get another deal. If he won't, he'll be moving on. Watching the Patriots draft in rounds 1 and 2, this off season, should give us a window into the Patriots thinking on this.
I don't disagree with the sentiment. Once a player gets to 30 in this league it's time to at least plan for the future. Remember Solder was one of just 3 picks the Pats have made outside the 20's and 30's (when the NFL actually allows te Pats to pick in the first round), around #17 IIRC And, he didn't start in his rookie year, until injuries hit. If I remember he played the Cam Flemming TE role to start with.

I believe that Solder, while not elite, is better than average, and you are right, if he plays his cards right he can retire a Patriot in 3 or 4 more years. Where we disagree is what the Pats will be looking for in the up coming draft. I think they will be looking to rebuild (or at least maintain) the defense. I think the secondary will remain mostly intact and is very good IMHO. But the loses of Jones Easley and Collins, and the ages of Long and Ninko, will compel the Pats to make this draft more about the defensive front 7 than anywhere else.

Solder is signed until after the 2017 season at the average starting LT money. If he plays well over the rest of the season and into next year, they will give him a 3 year extentiion at pretty much the same money. If not, they'll replace him. BTW- Remember Joe Tunney was a LT at NCSt

This OL has pretty good depth, especially if Jackson can come back healthy next season. We are also pretty deep at WR and TE (if they resign Bennett) We are also probably OK at RB for one more year, though I wouldn't mind a 2nd day pick of a big slasher to groom behind LGB.

No, Defense is where we need immediate help. I really like MBrown, and Valentine has been a pleasant surprise, as well as Flower's development. But we need to add more there and at LB EARLY in the draft.

Yes. Part of me wonders if he is a LT in waiting if they can't work out an extension for Solder.

Solder's cap hit is $11m next year. It bears watching

I can't believe Castanzo is getting paid more than Solder. Castanzo is a garbage tackle. Great pick by Polian!
