OT: Integrity of the Game? End of Ravens Game (youtube..)

To me delibritly commuting a foul on the instruction of the coach is cheating not just unsportsmanlike.

When we used the ineligible lineman the ravens had a fair chance they just were too slow to identify what they needed to do. The bengals did not have a fair chance
Stop it!!! If Bill did it we would cite his genius. This isn't Tennis or Golf.

remember a couple of weeks ago when we talked about intentionally taking a penalty to kill time?

this seems like it should have been a situation where the refs put time back on the clock

I think this will be addressed during the offseason. Not going to criticize Harbaugh for doing it, but now that we have seen it twice in the span of 3 weeks (albeit in quite different circumstances), that tells me the competition committee will take away the benefit from doing it.

... as they should, don't you think? It's one thing to line up in a confusing formation; it's another entirely to commit flagrant penalties all over the field with no repercussions. Smart play by the Ravens, but it's a loophole that should be closed going forward.

Yes, it should be changed. What I'd like to see happen:
1. BB to petition the League publicly now, saying this has been a loophole that stood for too long, and ask that it be changed mid-year.
2. For the League to deny his request, because it doesn't by policy make changes mid year. And for the press to cover it.
3. For the Pats to run this same play at the end of this year's 30 point Super Bowl victory over the Cowboys.

guess that's sorta my point...will the damnable Omissioner CHANGE the rules to reflect THIS obvious example of disgustingly bad sportsmanship perpetrated by Harbawl the stool pigeon scumbag? Sorta doubt it since it IS a REAL blemish, a STAIN on the history of the sport to deliberately break the rules EN MASSE. What's to stop him from calling for his players to break opposing players arms and legs next time? Will Shytheadell even admit this scene today was totally bereft of ANY integrity whatsoever? I think not.

First, I'll echo what just about everyone is saying. I have no issue with them doing it, it's within the rules, and a smart play. Harbaugh's hypocrisy is what bothers me there.

But in general, I do think that kind of thing should be against the rules. Seems to me the easiest way to solve it is treat offensive penalties the same as defensive penalties: The game can't end on one unless the offensive team is losing. So in that case, the Ravens would have taken the safety, but would have had to execute the free kick and give the Bengals a chance for a return.

Actually, if the defense accepted the penalty, the safety play would have been erased, and it'd still be 4th down, now with less time on the clock. So maybe throw in 'loss of down' on that, and I'd agree. That would eliminate the incentives for intentional penalties on a 4th down punt.

It's not against the rules so bravo for Harbawl and the Ravennes for taking advantage of it. That said, it's high comedy for a whiney little ***** boy of a coach to do that after his vagina was sore when the Pats similarly took advantage of the rule book. I hope the Pats open their mouths and **** down their throats when the two play.

It looked hysterical.

Football question: would taking the knee right then have stopped the clock and then it would change of possession on downs with a few seconds left? It seemed like an elaborate way to burn 19 seconds.

Simple fix. Change the rule as follows:

A half cannot end on a penalty to the defense, or to the offense on fourth down.

When the Saints did it ( holding to prevent a TD and run time off clock), the league sent out a memo that it was only a "palpably unfair act" and worth a penalty if it was repeated. Had the Ravens done it a second time, the refs could have penalized them... Don't like it but according to the league.........

Ian Eagle was no better: "No one's rushing him...Nobody has even come close to Koch."

Fouts: "That one at the 25 may be against the Bengals for holding the gunner. So we may have offsetting penalties here."

That might be the worst announcing I've ever seen/heard. Not even joking, if I was in charge I'd fire both of them on the spot. Do they have eyes? "No one's rushing??" Fouts...offsetting?? If the Ravens has just pulled out guns and shot the Bengals, would they have even noticed?

Good god. I mean, it's funny but not funny. Those two are allowed to vote and drive cars.

Because it's Harbaby and his history of running to mommy when someone got a bit too clever for him.

Other than that it's within the rules I guess.
Yup it's in the rules. So was ineligible players, so was playing with footballs that lose air naturally. It's just a problem when someone cries about it. This prick ,HardBawl, has the sack to pull this crap and then cry when someone else does something similar. What a douche. I loathe him and that whole Organization.

Wait, what? The refs are now empowered to penalize a team for being unfair, even if their actions are within the rules? And their decision to do so is a subjective call? Is that what I just read?

And another one of these ##$&* League "memos" that is a sad and indefensible substitution for actual rule changes and their own standardized processes for doing so?

This suddenly takes on another color altogether.

Unless declined by the defense.............

Unless you add loss of down, none of these schemes work, because the Ravens can still do things the same way they did yesterday - they run all the time off the clock, Bengals accept the penalty, Ravens use the new down to take a knee 10 yards back from the previous play.

And they could just as easily do it on a down other than 4th down, so making it 4th-down-only has no effect either.

The hypocrisy, in general, is annoying. If this were the Pats, you'd see players, fans, writers, commentators, etc. claiming the Patriots were bending the rules and "cheating" yet again. The league would also change the rules in the off-season to make it illegal.

Well, fans will be fans, but yes, Harbaugh's hypocrisy is incredible here. He whines about the Patriots using trick plays and legal (but rare) formations, but then does this himself.

That's fine. I just never ever ever want to hear him whine about another team doing something odd but legal.

A half cannot end on a penalty to the defense, or to the offense on fourth down.

Or just make it so the team accepting the penalty additionally has the option to put the time back on the clock.

Clock stops on all changes of possession, including a change of possession on downs.
